ward county: What's a Sheriff do? - 06/07/19 11:30 AM
Just what does a Sheriff and the Sheriff's office do? My guest today is Ward County Sheriff Robert (Bob) Roed and he does a great job of filling us in. Had I heard this interview when I was a young man I just may have made being a Deputy or the Sheriff my career choice.
Minot Today is broadcast over the air on two Minot radio stations every Friday. You can find it on 106.9 FM at 12:15 (Noonish) and again at 4:45 on 1320 AM. Of course I always post the broadcast as a Podcast here as well as my Podcast … (15 comments)

ward county: Notarizing for the Blind - 03/21/19 11:24 AM
A notary has one valid issue when working with document signers who are blind.
The question is, does the signer know what the document is that they are signing?
The notary needs to know that they are signing it willingly and deliberately?
Some states require the notary to read the entire document to the signer before the signature is notarized. If it has not been read to the signer, the notary cannot reasonably assume the person’s signature was intentional for the purposes set forth in the document.
Considering the number of documents related to a Real Estate closing a Notary Public may be required … (17 comments)

ward county: Can I get a Witness - 02/27/19 12:39 PM
The word WITNESS brings up all kinds of images in our heads but for a Notary Public it's usually one of three ways that the term is applied.
Is the common term "witness" the same as the term a Notary Public would use? Yes to some extent. For notaries it's one of three things:
1) Witnesses to wills and powers of attorney are called "signature witnesses" The legal role they play is to be present when the signer ads his/her name to the document. In this case witnesses also sign the document.
2) On a witness Jurat their job is to witness to … (14 comments)

ward county: A Journal is a Sure Sign of a Professional - 02/22/19 07:56 AM
North Dakota is one of a FEW States that does not require a Notary to keep a Journal. A professional keeps a Journal, it's a sure sign that you are dealing with a Pro who wants to protect both you and him/her self.
A Notary Journal is required in most States. In North Dakota a Journal is not required but the use of a Journal is certainly the mark of a PROFESSIONAL Notary Public. The Journal is further evidence of when and that you indeed had your document notarized. If your transaction should end up in court the Notary's Journal may be … (13 comments)

ward county: The Notary Can NOT Tell You What Form To Use - 01/31/19 05:12 PM
I'm not sure about every State but in the State of North Dakota the Notary can not tell you what kind of a notarization you need for your document (even if he/she knows) because that would be "practicing" law without a license.  The two most common notarization's are Acknowledgments and Jurats. If you don't know what you need... don't ask the notary!
When you want a document notarized but it does not have the State required "notarial language" on it we can add either an acknowledgment or a jurat to it to accomplish your intended purpose HOWEVER we would be practicing law if we told you, or even advised … (12 comments)

ward county: The Move Is Nearly Final - 01/08/19 02:21 PM
I'm finally on the "home stretch" of moving. I'm out of the model home my last office was in but I still have stuff in the garage and I need to go back and clean.
I'm about 3/4 of the way into my new office with the walls painted, desks and computers set up, and almost everything set up (my stereo sounds awesome in this smaller place).
The last feature to set up is that I have an alcove type of entrance and I'm really excited to set it up but I need to add a security gate (on order from Menard's) so the … (24 comments)

ward county: How to Get Involved With Foster Parenting in Minot. - 10/05/18 07:17 AM
Minot Today is only a 15 minute radio program broadcast over two radio stations. However it's very rare that we wrap up in 15 minutes so I also post my interviews as a podcast and often post the entire interview at my podcast site.

ward county: Hold On To Your Hat Ward County and Keep The Gloves On! - 02/07/18 05:01 PM

If you are like me and have not hard the flu (influenza) you may be tempted to think... it's not so bad. The North Dakota Department Of Health has some information that just might blow you away. It did me. The legend above is in itself a bit deceptive, after all 50+ cases are not all that many in the county but the truth lies in the actual number of cases in the chart to the left. It's not 50+ cases it's 300+ cases and the season is far from over!
So practical advice is great if you have not contracted the flu yet. … (6 comments)

ward county: Tonight Was Meet & Greet The Candidates - 06/07/16 11:46 AM

The Minot Home Builders and Local Lenders teamed up to have a "Meet & Greet" the candidates for Local, County, and State offices tonight. It was really a nice casual affair attended by Realtors, Bankers, and Home Builders.
It was easy to pick out the newcomers from the seasoned politicians as they gave their introductions. Some of the youngens stumbled a bit and one old timer who has been on the council far to long droned on reliving an old JFK speech.
They all did good and it was nice to see that almost no seat (City or County) was unopposed. The one category I wish … (9 comments)
