Good news! Senior taxpayers will no longer have to apply every year for the Senior Home Exemption. Until now, Cook County was the only Illinois county to force seniors to reapply annually.
If you already have the Senior Exemption you don’t need to do anything - your exemption will renew automatically - at least that’s what they’re saying now. I spoke with Jan Churchwell, the New Trier Township Assessor, who said she’s not sure it will work that way. cook county: Cook County Migration Stats - More People Moving Out than Moving In

I came across an interesting website from Forbes.com that shows where Americans are moving, county by county. By the looks of the map, it appears that more people are moving out of Cook County than are moving in. These are the lastest numbers and are from 2008. The site does not provide numbers, just a visual that shows the in and out movement. In another study of migration from Realtor.Org, Cook County receives the majority of new residents from DuPage, Will and Lake counties. Wait! Did you notice what Cook County did to your property tax bill? No advance warning - just a small note included with the bill and a small article in some papers. It was actually passed last October by the General Assembly and only applies to Cook County (the bill was aimed at counties with 3 million plus residents, and Cook County is the only one in Illinois!) You are now having to pay 55% of your first installment (due March 2) - usually homeowners pay 50% of the first bill, then the balance when the second installment arrives later in (0 comments)
