The North Shore communities of Winnetka, Wilmette, Kenilworth, Glencoe, and Northfield don't have new home subdivisions being built. That has not happened in a long time because the North Shore is wedged between Lake Michigan and the Cook County forest preserves - meaning all the land has already been developed. That does not mean, however, that you can't buy a new construction home here.
In fact, the subject of new construction can be a heated one since we've lost many "historical" homes to builders of new construction. Many in the community feel that these older homes should be saved - (3 comments)

Two exceptional luxury homes are being built side-by-side in Wilmette by Kaplan Custom Homes. These two homes are located in nationally recognized Avoca School and highly acclaimed New Trier school districts. And it's still not too late to make customizations. Both homes include exquisite architecture with the finest details and finishes. Four floors of luxury living with a stunning kitchen, premium appliances, first floor bedroom or office, and second floor laundry. The third floor has a bedroom, full bath, and playroom. The large basement includes a media room. Each home has a luxury master suite with his and hers walk-in closets. Plus - easy (0 comments)

Hibbard Road Gardens New Homes Under Construction The old nursery Hibbard Road Gardens in Northfield has begun construction of six new homes to be built by Edward R. James Partners of Glenview. In July of 2012 I wrote Hibbard Road Gardens in Northfield - New Homes to be Built by James. Since then, they decided to build six Cape Cod style homes with first floor master bedrooms. All six Hibbard Road Gardens homes sold out very quickly - a sure fire draw for many people downsizing (1 comments)

Turkeys are Here! Hibbard Road Gardens, Winnetka No - not the ones you eat - you still have to go to the grocery store for those! Hibbard Road Gardens in Winnetka has 3 beautiful Narragansett turkeys on display during the Thanksgiving holiday period. These birds are native to the east coast and are a seriously endangered historic variety of turkey. The Narragansett turkey is an American original, the parent of all other American turkeys. These birds are much larger (up to 40 lbs) than today's selectively bred commercial turkeys. They have been rare for decades - just 100 breeding pairs (7 comments)
Ironically, next week's election has two neighboring towns, Winnetka and Kenilworth, IL, with referendums on historic homes - another attempt at dealing with the teardown/McMansion issue. Preservationists have decried for years that their villages are changing irrevocably for the worse while others champion for property rights and the freedom and ability to sell to whomever they please. Kenilworth is undeniably a unique town - envisioned and built over 100 years ago by Joseph Sears whose specifications included large lots with quality construction. The completed look was one of stately homes that were large but left plenty of open green space around (2 comments)
