winnetka: Winnetka Memorial Day 2011
- 05/31/11 10:44 AM
Winnetka Memorial Day 2011 After days of rain and cold, the skies cleared and the temperatures soared. I think half the people of Winnetka came out of hibernation to walk, run, bike or drive over to Elm Street to see the Memorial Day Parade, invocation, and speeches at the Village Green. At about 90 degrees and very muggy I don't think anyone was complaining. Although Winnetka is a sophisticated and modern place to live, it still feels like small-town America on days like this. Regular folks coming out to honor our country's veterans.

winnetka: Closed Home Sales May 2011 - Winnetka, Wilmette,Glencoe, Kenilworth, Glencoe
- 05/31/11 09:43 AM
Closed Home Sales May 2011 Winnetka, Wilmette, Glencoe, Kenilworth, Glencoe The month of May saw closed sales go up in Winnetka,Wilmette, Kenilworth and Northfield and were down by 3 in Glencoe. Winnetka saw the largest increase doubling from 9 to 18 homes sold. The list price to sell price ratio also improved in Winnetka, Kenilworth, and Wilmette. But I really can't make too much of some of these changes on a month-by-month basis since some of these homes could easily have sold in April or June - better to look at six-month figures which I will do next

winnetka: Wild and Wet Spring In Winnetka and the North Shore Suburbs
- 05/26/11 10:12 AM
Wild and Wet Spring in Winnetka and the North Shore Suburbs Hold on to your hat (if you're smart enough to wear one!) It's not just the rain, but wind and hail too. Whatever little sayings you have heard about Midwestern weather, they are surely all true this Spring of 2011. One of the first things that transplants moving here must get used to are the wild swings in weather - 80 and sunny on Monday, then 45 and blustery on Tuesday. This spring has seen many of those kinds of days but mostly it's been just plain . . .

winnetka: Do Short Sales Occur in Winnetka and Other North Shore Villages
- 05/25/11 12:54 PM
Do Short Sales Occur in Winnetka and Other North Shore Villages? Yes, they do. Not nearly to the extent that they do in Florida or Nevada, or even Evanston or Naperville for that matter. But we are not immune to this happening and I find myself currently negotiating a contract that seems to be turning into a short sale. I know that many people in Winnetka, Northfield, Kenilworth, or Wilmette don't know what a short sale is because I am often asked to explain it. That is what I am going to do in this post and I will keep it

winnetka: I Saw the Home Alone House Today in Winnetka
- 05/24/11 11:07 AM
I Saw the Home Alone House Today in Winnetka Today, the Home Alone house, at 671 Lincoln St. in Winnetka, IL, was open for brokers to preview - a business card was required to insure that only licensed real estate agents were viewing the home. The home was built in 1921 and is gracious, comfortable, and . . . well, famous. But other than a few Home Alone posters, it feels like all well-kept homes built in that era. Beautiful moldings, large rooms, high ceilings and enough updates to feel like you could move right in. The dining room

winnetka: Some Thoughts on Staging Your Home in Winnetka, Wilmette, Kenilworth or Glencoe
- 05/22/11 01:44 PM
Some Thoughts on Staging your Home in Winnetka, Wilmette, Kenilworth or Glencoe Today on CBS's Sunday Morning, the show examined the business of staging homes, with this particular segment looking at Chicago. I came away with two major impressions: The agent who was interviewed (whose name I did not catch) said he won't list homes that are not staged. He wants to be proud of his listings, he wants the buyers to be wowed when they walk in, and he wants the his homes to be memorable. None of that will happen if the home owner is opposed or reluctant

winnetka: Four Things You May Not Know About Mortgages
- 05/13/11 05:18 AM
4 Things You May Not Know About Mortgages I am not a lender - but I found a survey done by Zillow to be a real eye-opener. Understanding mortgages is vital to your home-buying venture - the more you know the better you will feel about the lending process. Confusion appears to be wide spread and here are 4 things that you should know about financing your Winnetka or North Shore home: 1. Lender Fees are Negotiable - many buyers are not aware that fees for appraisals, credit reports, etc. are negotiable. The survey showed that buyers thought the fees

winnetka: Is Your American Flag Ready for Retirement?
- 05/10/11 08:10 AM
UPDATED 2022 Is Your American Flag Ready for Retirement? I know that you are not supposed to let an American flag touch the ground and that it should be burned when it's too old and tattered for use anymore. Did you know that it is disrespectful to fly an old faded and torn flag? Did you know that burning them used to be easy when they were made of cloth, but nowadays many are made of nylon and burial is actually proper for those types of flags. There are some very explicit directions to follow when disposing of an old flag -

winnetka: High End Homes Selling in Winnetka, Wilmette, Kenilworth & Glencoe
- 05/09/11 03:32 AM
There are currently 21 homes under contract/pending that are priced over $2 million in Winnetka, Wilmette, Kenilworth and Glencoe, with the high end home priced at $7,785,000. That breaks down to 7 in Glencoe, 4 in Kenilworth, 1 in Wilmette, and 9 in Winnetka. I think that's a tremendous rebound from a sluggish high-end market, particularly in light of the fact that there are only 25 homes under contract priced under $500,000! Check out the numbers in this chart: The highest number of under contract homes is still under $1,000,000. The total of under contract homes

winnetka: "Home Alone" House in Winnetka IL
- 05/07/11 06:41 AM
UPDATED 2019 "Home Alone" House in Winnetka Plucky hero, Keven McAllister (Macaulay Caulkin), hasn't set foot in this Winnetka house since 1990, but the memory of him setting off wildly inventive booby traps lives on in this Winnetka home. On any given day, cars can be seen slowing down in front of the home to snap photos and imagine the young child left behind trying to thwart off the two home burglers, Harry and Marv. The 14 room, four-bedroom brick home famously features the staircase that Culkin sledded down, and sits on approximately 1/2 acre, just a few blocks north from

winnetka: Grandfather Knows Best
- 05/02/11 06:04 AM
Grandfather Knows Best Twenty-six years ago Joe Baker became a grandfather - it was on that day that he began to jot down his everyday, practical advice and knowledge to be handed down to his grandchildren. Today, ten grandchildren later, he has self-published a book entitled "Grandpa Told Me . . . Things Your Father Meant to Tell You." It is compiled with plain spoken advice and quotations on a variety of subjects including investing, jobs, politics, marriage, religion, and education. The reason I bring this book up is because I like some of what Grandpa has to say.

winnetka: Winnetka Annual Spring Clean-Up Week is Here May 2-5
- 05/01/11 10:41 AM
Winnetka Annual Spring Clean-Up Week is Here May 2 - 5 Piles of junk everywhere. Or at least piles of stuff since a lot of what Winnetkans throw out looks like it's very reusable. In fact, the quiet streets of Winnetka are fairly busy with people driving trucks arounds looking to make some good "finds." The village will pick-up just about anything except yardwaste, dirt, stone, construction materials or debris, logs, liquid and paint. Just pile your stuff on the curb and if the rehabbers and junkmen don't take it, the Village surely will. The village website says they

winnetka: Calling All Artists to Winnetka
- 04/13/11 05:27 AM
Calling All Artists to Winnetka Every artist dreams of their own studio - a place full of bright natural light. A space large enough to spread out and have several easels going at once and where it's quiet and private yet just within reach of other family members. If you are an artist and are looking for a great home in Winnetka, this may be just for you. The artist-in-residence here built this studio ten years ago and thought of everything. Floor to ceiling windows, skylights, and a floor made to handle spills and splashes. Yet there is still a
