Winter is here, but that doesn't mean the demand for blood donations is going down the fact is it is actually going up. The finally couple weeks of summer can actually be one of the biggest times for the need for blood. Families are doing a lot of holiday shopping and that means a lot more poeple on the road and unfortunately with the holiday weekend accidents happen and the need for blood for transfusions rise.

I can tell you that instead of planning a vacation which can make you feel good for a few days, why not do something that can make you feel good forever and only takes a couple hours? That is right, donate blood! If you are planning your summer vacation, stop right now, take 3 minutes and plan to give blood and then go back to planning the vacation.

When is the best time to giveblood? The answer to that is anytime! Anytime you can donate blood, there will always be someone who could use it. But, as the holidays approach, why not give the best gift of all, the gift of life! My personal story is 20 years ago this year my dad had a liver transplant due to a rare liver problem. Thanks to someones donation of that liver and the blood transfusions needed during that surgery, I am happy to say my dad willbe celebrating a 20th extra Christmas with us this year.

I am proud to say, since I have been able to start donating blood when I was 18, I’ve reached the two gallon mark and hope to one day reach the 3 gallon mark. I think it’s a great thing todonate blood. Heck, afterward you get free cookies and juice. (If you have met me, you know I like my cookies and juice.) But, the more important thing is by donating blood you are saving a life! The hurricane and tornado seasons are fast approaching, and with that comes injuries that require life saving blood infusions.
