the city of roses city of roses portland: The City of Roses . . . Speechless Sunday - 10/10/09 06:21 PM

For the past several weeks, I've been posting about The City of Roses using photos of roses from my backyard.  Pretty soon, the Fall will turn into Winter, and in preparation I'll be pruning the Rose bushes back.  The City of Roses and the Speechless Sundays and Wordless Wednesdays of the backyard blooms will be put on hold.
I like The City of Roses.  I particularly like this rose, with its circular inner motions, and the color is stunning.  I even like the few petals that are not pristine, the few that are turning -- past their prime.  It just goes to show you that there's still a … (15 comments)

the city of roses city of roses portland: Nicknames for Portland - 10/07/09 02:27 PM
Portland, Oregon has quite a few nicknames . . . Potland being one of the more cheesier of them.
But of the nicer ones, here's a little excerpt of their humble beginnings:
The City of Roses - Way back in 1888, a group of visitors met at the Episcopalian Church for a convention.  They couldn't help take notice of the lovely rose garden, and the roses around the city.  Their remarks were about the City being full of Roses.

Remember this quote by Shakespeare?
"What's in a name?
That which we call rose

Since relocating to Portland in 1990, I noticed why they called it the City of Roses . . .
When I bought a home, I planted a lot of rose bushes, I wanted to feel included in the city of roses!
Now I have my own city of roses in my backyard! There was something about the vibrant color that made me want to snap this photo.  I saw the beautiful yellow almost shining from across the yard. Then when I started to photograph it, I realized that while one rose was in full bloom, two others are waiting to take its place.  I like the thought of … (12 comments)

Both web and bud are so delicate, aren't they?  One supports the other, and in the first weekend of fall, I thought this was a wonderful juxtaposition and balance of nature in her purest form.  A bud about to bloom and the busy spider setting up its web.  Both … (25 comments)
