This week I joined the Miss Brainerd Lakes Scholarship pageant (MAO) contestants and their guests for a workshop on breast cancer. I have a strong family tie to the ugly disease and always am interested in the latest information. A young woman, Rachel, started out the workshop by telling her story. She had a double mastectomy in her 20's, so was a great motivator for these young women to start checking their breast health early on in life and to continue being proactive. I am sneezing, coughing and congested. So are other members of my family including those who came home from Florida with me. I feel fine but am tired (probably a lack of sleep). They, however are just miserable and have additional symptoms that I thankfully am not sharing. Fever, chills, thick mucus, aches and a total lack of motivation (so they say). I think that my problems are due to allergies and they have a cold or the flu. Today for the first time since 9-11, you can go to the top of the Statue of Liberty. "On that fateful day in 2001, she held her head high as she witnessed with her own eyes the horrors that took place just across from her watery home. When the former President Boris Yeltsin of Russia was buried, he had a Russian Orthodox service. This is the first time in over a century that in Russia a deceased head of state was bid a religious farewell.
The memorial service was held in central Moscow's Christ the Savior Cathedral and was attended by our former U.S. Presidents George H.W.Bush and Clinton along with dignitaries from many countries.
Was the name of Christ spoken-was the plan of Salvation talked through- did those in charge of the religious parts of this service speak truth to the living?

Paul Bunyan is part of the new 2008 Holiday Village located in the Westgate Mall Brainerd/Baxter Minnesota. Paul the Doll and his big wooden chair were found on E-Bay and were created by Designer & Fabric Artist Marilyn Lee and Craftsmen Kenny Kraeplin. His creators donated him to the Paul Bunyan Scenic Byway Association.
This Paul is not small and it took 3 people to move him to the Holiday Village. He rode there in the Shores & More Realty van.

With more homes going into foreclosure in our area - the former owners think that they have a right to strip out any valuables. This is not the way it works legally and they are unknowingly setting themselves up for more problems. Not only are they stripping homes, they are actually vandalizing the homes upon leaving. Somehow they feel that by taking their frustrations with their lenders (or themselves) out on the home - they will gain something.

The last Fall Women's Health Speaker Class was on breast cancer, a topic that has probably affected most families. Dr Troy Duininck, who gave an overview of cancer, stated that one in eight women get breast cancer and in 2007 there were 178,480 new breast cancer cases that were diagnosed. He said that in Minnesota there were about 3000 new cases and that Brainerd St Joseph's hospital had 72. Duininck also said that 85-90% of breast cancer cases are not heriditary.

Thanksgiving is coming up and one of our traditional side dishes is the French Onion Greenbean dish. My double ovens are usually quite full, so I was happy to find a recipe for a similar dish made in a crockpot. I have not found too many people who do not eat this and it is always welcomed as part of our left over line up ( so I make a double recipe). This would probably tote well to any event where you have to contribute a dish or score points at a tail-gating party.

The new ballpark for the Minnesota Twins will be called the Target Field. This is right across the street from the Target Center, home to the NBA's Minnesota Timberwolves. The retailer and the Twins will be collaborating on the design of Target Plaza which will connect the $517 Million 40,000 seat Target Field to downtown Minneapolis. This will include a pedestrian bridge and public gathering space. All this Target stuff will be just a few blocks away from the Target corporation's headquarters in downtown Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Congratulations to the newly crowned Mis Brainerd Lakes, Emily Wyman. Emily is a Brainerd High School graduate, who will be attending Concordia College in Moorhead this fall. She won the Talent and Interview portions of the pageant, with Heather Erickson winning the Evening Gown and Swim Suit competitions.
First runner up was Breanna Sinner and second runner up - Heather Erickson. The theme for this year's pageant was "It's Not Just Make Believe". For Emily, a dream come true and a chance to compete for the title of Miss Minnesota in Eden Prairie next June.

April 25th, Friday, from 7-10 P.M. at the Aitkin, Minnesota V.F.W. will be a night of classic rock music. This is a free event sponsored by the Kinship of Aitkin County youth leaders.
These young people are taking a stand against drugs and are bringing community awareness to the dangerous effects of drugs and alcohol.
The feature band for this community event will be Halvorson McNabb, a local band from the Crosby area. Root beer and snacks will be served.
