Here I am reporting from my booth at the Crow Wing County Fair in Brainerd, Minnesota.  The band just finished playing in the Mill's Free Stage and the next one starts in 2 hours.  The stage is right next to my booth so I get to hear a lot of great music. The exhibit booths are open daily from 10:00 AM until 10:00 PM. Today is Thursday and it is Ag Day.  Some of the day's events include a kids' pedal pull at noon and a demolition derby  tonight in the Grandstand at 7 PM.  I am sure it will … (2 comments)

kathleen lordbock: Children Gain Weight in the Summer - 07/14/07 01:48 PM

The Nation's schools which have been often criticized for unhealthy school lunches, well-stocked vending machines and cuts in their physical education programs - may actually do a better job than parents in keeping children fit and trim.
A study found that 5-6 year olds gained more weight over the summer that during the school year, casting doubt on the assumption that kids are generally more active during their summer vacations time.  Researchers speculate the extra pounds during the summer months come from the lack of the structure of the school year with all its activities and daily comings and goings,

kathleen lordbock: "What does Love Have to Do with It"? - 06/01/07 12:55 PM
Slow down for three minutes to read this. It is so worth it. Touching words from the mouth of babes. What does Love mean? A group of professional people posed this question to a group of 4 to 8 year-olds, "What does love mean?" The answers they got were broader and deeper than anyone could have imagined. See what you think: --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"When my grandmother got arthritis, she couldn't bend over and paint her toenails anymore. So my grandfather does it for her all the time, even when his hands got arthritis too. That's love." Rebecca- age 8 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As we are now in the Memorial holiday weekend and tonight is our first public performance of our annual "Freedom Celebration" a  program honoring area servicemen and women and thanking God for our freedom and our country.  As we honor them for their sacrifice, we also point them to Jesus as the one sacrifice who gives us freedom from payment for our sins.
"Freedom Celebration" in the past has brought in the old, the maimed, service families left behind, the newly enlisted young and brave and those who emotionally have never recovered from their battles. They will come to hear … (4 comments)

kathleen lordbock: Armed Forces Day Photos - 05/21/07 06:29 AM

That's me in the middle with the sling & my mouth open, of course.(that is how we sing here in MN). It was a bright and sunny day and the crowd was ready to roll.  The kids were climbing the wall (that is what it was there for) and exploring all the equipment.  We even tried out a few pieces and got in a tank.  I do not like small spaces so that didn't last long.
All in all it was a great day at the Brainerd National Guard Armory.
These are the follow up photos from … (0 comments)

kathleen lordbock: Baby Born on 1-2-3-4-5-6-7 ! - 05/11/07 05:29 PM
Klare Mada Lorentz was born to Kalli and Rick Lorentz of Pillager, MN on Sunday, May 6th, 2007 at precisely 12:34 P.M. "The timing was simply amazing," said Nan Kalk, a registered nurse at Lakewood Health System in Staples who played a role in Klare's natural delivery.  "It really was a one-in-a-million event, especially considering the delivery team did nothing to interfere with what time the baby arrived.
"Klare will forever be known as
Lakewood Health System's
"little 1234567 baby," said Kalk.

kathleen lordbock: MN Home Stager Report-Sheriff, Priest, and Mayor in Jail - 05/09/07 08:28 AM

Crow Wing County built a new 286-bed jail and already has welcomed in the first of many inmates.  But there was something a bit unusual about these inmates which I hope will not be a common theme.
They were all issued what will be the standard orange CWC jumpsuit, patted down, and had their personal possessions taken away.  In the beginning they all looked happy to be here.  The inmates included a sheriff, city council members, a mayor, a priest, county commissioners and many of the area officials.  Has there been a crime wave amonst the elite?   Well, not this time, … (1 comments)

kathleen lordbock: Mn Home Stager Report- Now what size are those docks? - 05/08/07 12:20 PM

The DNR has changed its mind about the size of platforms at the end of docks.  The maximum allowance width of the dock leading to the platform will stay at 8 feet.  However, the platform at the end of the dock may be as large as 10.5 x 16 feet, or a total 170 square feet.
This new regulation will continue through November 30, 2007.  By next spring things could change. "The wording for next year will likely be a little tighter after we see what happens and what issues come up this year," said Tom Hovey, DNR public waters permits program … (0 comments)

kathleen lordbock: Minnesota Home Stager Report-Babe is Getting A Makeover - 05/07/07 09:36 AM

Having gone to college at Bemidj  State University in Bemidji , Minnesota- I spent a good deal of time hanging out with Paul Bunyan and his happy side kick Babe the Blue Ox.  Apparently the years have not been good to Babe and he is needing a little nip and tuck. Starting in May, he will undergo a grueling three week surgery with no anesthetic to repair his ribs and spine. Then instead of balancing on four separate platforms, Babe will proudly be standing on one rather large slab of cement. He should be out of recovery and ready for visitors … (3 comments)

kathleen lordbock: Mn Home Stager Report - Fire Danger High in Brainerd Lakes Area - 05/05/07 12:13 PM

Although the rain that we are getting this weekend will help, the fire danger will still remain at a high for our area.  Thus far we have experienced a number of wildfires and a total of 10-12 acres have burned. Brainerd DNR program forester Mark Mortensen reported that no structures were damaged at this point. Several fires were started last week by people who were burning even though there is a restriction presently in place.
