kathleen lordbock: Teen Challenge WILL BE in Brainerd, MN - 01/02/08 05:42 AM

Sunday, December 23rd , was a day of rejoicing for our church body when we burned the mortgage for our former church building on Business Highway 371 in Brainerd. Minnesota.  The mortgage was paid off by an anonymous donor and then the building and 9 acres donated to Teen Challenge of Minnesota. It was an exciting day, especially for those of us who had been working intensely on the project both on and off the internet. Many meetings with people and God took place and I feel that God's will was done . We are grateful that there was no … (10 comments)

kathleen lordbock: Guarding The Tree - 12/06/07 03:14 AM
Tonight's my first night as a watchdog, And here it is Christmas Eve... The children are sleeping' all cozy upstairs, While I'm guarding' the stockin's and tree... What's that now - footsteps on the rooftop? Could it be a cat or a mouse? Who's this down the chimney? A thief with a beard- And a big sack for robbin' the house? I'm barkin', I'm growlin', I'm bitin' his butt... He howls and jumps back in his sleigh... I scare his strange horses, they leap in the air... I've frightened the whole bunch away...                                                                                                                     photo by ctaloi - Flickr Now … (9 comments)

kathleen lordbock: Life Lessons ~ Part 4 - 11/26/07 03:07 PM

Why do people attempt to climb dangerous mountains?  Why do people try to break the records in the Guinness Book of World Records? Why do people try so hard to do what no one else or so few have been able to do? They like the challenge.  They think they can and often they do, go -  where no one has gone before.
"My mother told me to believe that the only obstacles you're going to have are the ones that you fabricate for yourself....If you don't know how to do something or if something … (18 comments)

kathleen lordbock: Life Lessons ~ Part 2 - 11/24/07 03:17 AM

You are enjoying your job and things are going well - until a door slams shut, a deal falls through, a contract has loopholes and your client goes through them.  You find yourself contemplating: becoming a hermit, taking a vacation permanently, going back to school and becoming a Climatologist.  All these may be the correct choices for you, but you need to listen to others who are wiser and unemotionally involved in the situation. Don't be afraid or too proud to ask for advice.  Find a good mentor and be one.
"There is nothing wrong with holding an opinion and … (19 comments)

kathleen lordbock: Life Lessons ~ Part 1 - 11/23/07 03:33 AM

At times, we will have periods in which we doubt as to whether the career path we have chosen is an appropriate fit for us. In fact, on the average, you can expect to have between three and five career changes during your lifetime, and up to six job changes within a career.  Whether you are a Home Stager, Realtor, or loan broker these bits of advice from others in this series, may tell you something that you have been needing to hear - right now.
"Inevitably, if you aim high enough, you will be buffeted by demands of family, … (20 comments)

kathleen lordbock: Social Capital Survey - Looking At How We Live - 10/18/07 06:05 AM

Social capital is a hard term to describe, but when Mike Burton gave it a try, he came up with the "web of relationships that gives us a sense of connection, belonging, and community".
How do people in your community interact?  Are they friendly, helpful, and how do they deal with strangers?  Do you volunteer for anything?  What do you do in your free time?
These are the types of questions that 500 Lakes Area residents will be answering by telephone survey calls.  Answers will take about 12 minutes and are … (1 comments)

kathleen lordbock: Red Cabbage Slaw - 10/18/07 05:48 AM
I  planted red cabbage this year in my Minnesota garden,  instead of the white variety. I got four beautiful heads and made one into this beautiful and very tasty salad.  You can add even more colors by putting in julienned carrots sticks. Make sure they are thin. I use chopped onion instead of the powder, but we really like our onions. I also throw in some mustard seeds. So there are my variations and the original recipe - enjoy!        This is a clone recipe of the very popular sweet and sour cabbage slaw served at the popular North Woods … (5 comments)

kathleen lordbock: Minnesota Home Stager Report - Pot Pies Recalled - 10/16/07 03:55 AM
OK - this is not a blog about staging , but I just want to give you a heads up on this recall because I already ate my pie.  That is right, the whole pot pie all by myself and then I find the recall article after lunch.  The colors on the box are very trendy although don't you think?  They lured me in for the buy.
Minnesota officials are advising consumers to avoid eating all varieties of frozen pot pies produces by ConAgra Foods, because of a possible salmonella contamination.  Earlier they advised that only certain types of … (9 comments)

kathleen lordbock: What if it is Your Last Chance? - 10/13/07 09:38 AM

Randy, a computer science professor, has pancreatic cancer and was giving his last lecture to his  400 students
and colleagues. They had come to see him give what was billed as his “last lecture.” This is a common title for
talks on college campuses. Top professors are asked to think deeply about what matters to them and to give
hypothetical final talks. In Randy's case - doctors predict that he has only a few more months to live.
For the audience, the question to be mulled is this: What wisdom would we impart to
the world if we knew it … (26 comments)

kathleen lordbock: In My Mother's Kitchen - 09/25/07 03:29 PM
I learned more than how to stuff a turkey or properly dice an onion in my mother's kitchen  She hardly ever let me cook (her kitchen), but she let me watch and she talked.  She would tell me where this recipe came from and on what special occasion it  would have been served.  She talked about her mother and how she did things.  She talked - I listened and watched.  Having an very good visual memory - I learned.  (Please don't ask me people's names, I am bad at that.)
My mother is now gone, but her recipes live … (69 comments)

kathleen lordbock: Autumn Is The In Season - 09/13/07 07:07 AM

Last night here in Brainerd, Minnesota, we experienced our first Frost of the season.  While I had my vegetable garden covered, I neglected some of my other baskets and planters and lost them.  Oh well, that will reduce my workload somewhat. However, as I see the leaves turning reds, oranges and yellows it reminds me that my staging accessories, also, now need to reflect the Fall season.
Once Fall officially arrives, I  also start  cozying up my own home, getting out the flannel sheets,  moving the cooler colors  into storage and bringing out the … (25 comments)

So often we think that we are getting away with something or that no one will notice. If you have children, they notice everything and mimic others.  If you repeat an action often enough, it becomes a habit.  So now your habits have become their habits, as well.  How you react to a situation will be noted, internalized and stored there to help them when they encountered a similar situation. Not only are your outward physical actions being copied but your values, prejudices,  & your evaluation system for making choices and judgments.

Soon all the nation's schools will be back in session, changing the lives of everyone with children still in a school of any type.  My youngest recently left for college in Florida and that is a long way from Minnesota - hence a big change for all of us.
Notebooks, pens and other school supplies are crowding out the garden sections in stores.  If you got your counter cleared off this summer - make way for the incoming notices, schedules and hot lunch money reminders.

kathleen lordbock: Painting Cabinets- Step by Step Directions - 08/16/07 01:55 PM
A number of recent blogs have addressed the idea of painting over wood cabinets.  I am in the process of doing this in my own kitchen and just finished with a client's. Mine, of course, will take almost forever, but it will be worth it.  I grew tired of everything oak in my house and decided to change it up a bit. My bottom cabinets will be black and the top cabinets white. The island base black and the counter top on that  is White Corian.  The other counter tops will be changed out, but I have not decided as to … (11 comments)

kathleen lordbock: Cuyuna Range Medical Center New Areas to Open This Fall - 08/15/07 04:39 PM

Along with a new main entrance for the Cuyuna Range Medical Center,  the new pharmacy and inpatient areas will be completed in this phase.  The inpatient rooms are much larger and offer pull out couch beds for family members.  Communications for patients to staff are improved and electronic medical records in place.

After the dust settles, the next phase of construction will begin.  A large sweeping hallway to the inpatient area will feature water sounds and natural lighting for sensory appeal.  Along the hallway will be a cafe, visitor lounges and a chapel.  This phase will be complete early in … (0 comments)
