technology: The Best Of Both Worlds - REBlogworld & BlogWorld Expo - 08/18/08 12:10 PM
The next innovation in blogging technology will probably not come from within the Real Estate blogging community.
I'm not saying this because I don't have faith in the creative minds that occupy this real estate space. I do. But innovation is more likely to come from those who are focused on the larger blogging community outside of the RE.net.
This was true last at last years BlogWorld, where new technologies like Utterz made their debut.
This is one of the main reasons I'm happy to be speaking at REBlogWorld. Of course I'm happy to be doing my presentaion on Using … (21 comments)

technology: The Key To Communication Is Desire, Not Technology - 04/05/08 10:15 AM
"I guess we have an open house this weekend? Just because we are out of state doesn't mean our Realtor should not update us."
We have more communication options at our fingertips than at any other time in history. Communication technology is so pervasive, we are left without excuses for sharing any piece of important information in a timely manner.
The consumer quote shown above was a "tweet" from ymiris on Twitter.  I don't have a clue what the back story is to this social message. It doesn't matter. In communication, perception is reality.
He's right even if he's wrong. He's right even … (40 comments)

technology: Going To NAR With Utterz In My Pocket - 11/09/07 08:47 AM
The Best Test Is A Live Test In Real World Settings. As Teresa Boardman so kindly pointed out at The Real Estate Weenie, I jumped back on Twitter last night.
I had decided to stop using Twitter and last night someone I would not have expected to be using Twitter decided to "follow me" there. I couldn't resist. I had to see what they were tweeting about. And that was all it took. It appears the RE.net on Twitter has expanded... and I'm easy.
The next thing you know I'm following a link here and a link there and I was enjoying … (41 comments)

technology: One Of My Favorite New Blogs - SuckyStartups.com - 09/25/07 11:03 AM
When was the last time you looked at a new Web 2.0 startup and said to yourself, "I must be getting old, because I don't get this one at all!"This morning? Yeah. Me too!
That's why I like SuckyStartups.com. It's a blog that aims to prove that sometimes the Web 2.0 ideas flying around the Internet that I "just don't get" are just really bad, poorly conceived ideas. Sometimes it's true that I can't understand a concept because I'm not 18 years old and don't live in that world. But a lot of the time it has nothing to do with … (67 comments)

technology: A New Way To Browse For Content - Fichey - 07/27/07 10:27 AM
Disclaimer: This is not going to be for everyone. But if you like finding information in a non-linear way and understanding what's "hot" right now, Fichey may be for you.
Fichey.com launched yesterday [ TechCrunch ]. It has a new approach to the growing trend of web surfing that has been popularized by sites like  Del.icio.us, Digg, Downfly, Reddit and StumbleUpon. What makes Fichey unique is its simplicity and beauty. It's 100% flash based, so the controller is ridiculously simple to use... two buttons gives you control over the flow of content. You can select which of the social bookmarking sites … (21 comments)

technology: Google Can Recognize Your Face - 06/02/07 07:01 AM
Google has been leaking that they were working on the ability to search based on "visual concepts," not just on textual contexts.
The video below will show you how it works, but in general all you need to do to test this out for yourself is ad this to your image search URL string: &imgtype=face
In this search paramater, "face" means human face. And what you will see in this video may be the first efforts to come out of Google's Neven Vision purchase. It appears to be a true "image object recognition." I have to tell you, even after reading about … (33 comments)

technology: Microsoft Surface - Something Truly Amazing Out Of Redmond - 05/30/07 01:45 AM
Apple is incorporating "Multi-Touch" into the upcoming iPhone, but Microsoft has just taken it to a new level with Microsoft Surface. If you've know me at all, you know I hate Microsoft.
Those are strong words, I know. But I do. Can't help myself. I've tried to stop. It's almost irrational at this point in my life. So this post would be hard to write if this weren't so amazing.
This is the first truly amazing thing I've seen out of Redmond in a long, long time. Popular Mechanics has a great behind-the-scenes first look in video form. I've watched it several … (47 comments)

technology: Shift Happened In The Process Of Writing This Post - 05/17/07 05:25 AM
I've had this video saved as a draft post since May 2.
It was sent to me by Joe Fenton, saying I might want to put it up on my JustDugUp.com site, the one I use when I don't have time for a real post. My response - this deserved a post. I never got to it and, in my opinion, it's old news.
The video hit me at an emotional level. I don't have the time to verify all the facts presented, but I've found no blogger refuting them. It's beside the point. I've wanted to post about it since May … (72 comments)

technology: Increased Costs? I need some help. - 02/03/07 02:50 PM
I don't know who Mike Thoman is, but he left this comment on Michael Cooks post at BloodhoundBlog.
"Of course, none of this discussion takes into account the huge expenses increas taken on by the broker/owners of real estate firms in the last 30 years."
Can someone explain this to me?
I know for a fact that advances in technology over the last 30 years should make it LESS expensive to run a business that is driven by information. My own current business is almost completely virtual. Technology makes that possible. So, why is this not true in real estate?
Inquiring minds want … (38 comments)

technology: Ideas Are Your Friend. Don't Kill Them. - 02/02/07 05:15 AM
I had a very enjoyable email conversation with an ActiveRain  member yesterday.
I had mentioned that I was noticing an unwilingness to engage in a true exchange of ideas. Some are, of course, but many appear to fear idea exploration that takes them out of their comfort zone, or ideas that they assume will only lead them in a direction that might harm their current understanding or reality.
It's common for people to get defensive around an idea.
I said some things in the email and the response was, "Listen, why don't you take everything you just said to me and write a … (23 comments)

technology: Windows Vista: Switch Or Not? - 12/05/06 06:46 AM
With Microsoft ready for public release of their new Windows Vista operating system, speculation about their ability to plug the security holes rampant in every existing Windows platform has been widespread. Microsoft had touted the update as "extremely secure" and several of their executives even went so far as to say, "I'd let my children use Vista without any antivirus protection."

Well, the speculation can stop. ZDNet is reporting that Vista is vulnerable to known malware from 2004. That's right, 2004!  These are not new, obscure kernal attacks, these are very well known internet worms that comprise 39.7% of all malware … (57 comments)
