One of the pastimes I enjoy is learning new facts and interesting pieces of history. Sometimes I come across intriguing stories while reading our local San Jose Mercury News, Mental Floss or  Smithsonian Magazine. As in ancient times, people look forward to when spring and summer, and warmer, longer days will start. From June 21 until December 21, the days get shorter and the nights get longer.
December 21 is the Winter Solstice, the shortest day of the year and longest night of the year. It marks the start of days getting longer and nights getting shorter, from December 21 to June 21.

National Short Girl Appreciation Day is observed next on Saturday, December 21st, 2019.  Who reading this has ever felt like or been told they are a "short girl"?Even though slim and tiny are considered positive physical attributes, somehow the phrase "short girl" seems like a rather negative slur. This event has always been observed the first day of Winter.
Why? Because December 21 (Winter Solstice) is also the Shortest Day of the Year!
