michelle carr crowe: Tuppence A Bag, February 3 is Feed the Birds Day - 02/03/20 01:01 PM
Bird watching can be a fun family hobby, and one of the easiest ways to see more flying feathered friends is to feed the birds. Placing a bird feeder with an assortment of seeds along with a water source in front of a picture window can result in hours of enjoyment watching the birds. A fun activity for people of any age is to track the numbers of different types of birds who visit the feeder.

michelle carr crowe: Slumber Party Time! January 3 is Festival of Sleep Day! - 01/03/20 01:56 PM
It's no surprise that many folks need recovery time after the holiday season.
Doesn't taking a nice long nap or sleeping in sound deliciously appealing? Sadly, many of us, especially in rush-rush Silicon Valley, are chronically sleep deprived. That makes the January 3 "Festival of Sleep Day" a good excuse to rest up and start the New Year off right. This image of "Santa Steve" (my husband) shows exactly how to celebrate this holiday properly.

michelle carr crowe: 3 Weird Facts About Boxing Day December 26 - 12/27/19 04:39 PM
The first time I heard about Boxing Day was when I read it on a calendar I received from Santa.
Even though I didn’t grow up with Boxing Day as a family tradition, I enjoy celebrating it on or about December 26. It sometimes takes a while to summon the energy to go through things to donate them, if you know what I mean.
Boxing Day is a British holiday traditionally celebrated on Dec. 26, the day after Christmas. Boxing Day was established as a way for the wealthy to bless those less fortunate on a regular basis.

michelle carr crowe: Insight from San Jose Dance Theatre's Nutcracker Ballet - 12/15/19 03:59 PM
Who doesn't enjoy a beautiful Christmastime production of the Nutcracker Ballet? Our family's enjoyed this particular group's production of the Nutcracker Ballet at the Center for the  Performing Arts in downtown San Jose for several of the last 54 years. It is the longest running Nutcracker production in San Jose. When I took ballet as a young girl, the ballet school I studied at was the Los Gatos Academy of Dance run by Shawn Stuart and Paul Curtiss (which later became the San Jose Dance Theatre). Everyone was welcome to audition, and even now the auditions are open to students from other schools. … (6 comments)

michelle carr crowe: Only Fir, Spruce Trees for Christmas, Pine Toxic to Pets - 12/03/19 06:59 PM
Did you know that pine trees are toxic to pets, especially cats? It's recommended that if you must have a Christmas tree inside, make it a Fir or Spruce Tree.
Even so, regular cleanup of fallen needles is recommended as they are sharp and can harm a pet's digestive system. Vet bills are no fun for the holidays.

What do Basketball, Elvis Presley and Radium have in common? All three share an important anniversary on December 21.
One of the pastimes I enjoy is learning new facts and interesting pieces of history. Other times I find articles or facts online at The History Place, Brainy Historyor National Geographic Society. Today’s collection of facts was found at DatesinHistory.com.

michelle carr crowe: Shortest Day, Longest Night Winter Solstice December 21 - 12/02/19 04:17 PM
As in ancient times, people look forward to when spring and summer, and warmer, longer days will start. From June 21 until December 21, the days get shorter and the nights get longer.
December 21 is the Winter Solstice, the shortest day of the year and longest night of the year. It marks the start of days getting longer and nights getting shorter, from December 21 to June 21.
Many cultures celebrate and acknowledge this point in time with festivals and rites to welcome the seasonal start of winter. It's believed that Stonehenge in England was used for these types of … (4 comments)

michelle carr crowe: How Much Do You Know About Juneteenth June 19? - 06/19/19 12:36 PM
Juneteenth, also known as Emancipation Day, is an American holiday celebrating the elimination of slavery. It is always held on June 19th.
Back on this date in 1862,  U.S. Congress prohibited slavery in the United States and territories, nullifying Dred Scott v. Sandford.
Due to the isolation of Texas from many of the other states (and the lack of the Internet!) it wasn't until 1865 that slaves in Galveston, Texas were finally informed of their freedom.
Since then, the anniversary of this formal announcement of freedom is officially celebrated in Texas and 41 other contiguous states on June 19 annually as Juneteenth.

michelle carr crowe: Stop and Smell the Roses June 12 is Red Rose Day - 06/12/19 12:41 PM
"A rose by any other name would smell just as sweet..."
the great poet Shakespeare wrote.
Yet it's difficult to imagine the scent of a sworn (and inherently stinky) enemy would ever smell as sweet as a freshly fragrant red rose.
Shakespeare's line is from Romeo and Juliet, the famous play about star-crossed lovers who have the misfortune to love ones from the houses of their enemies.
Juliet (a Capulet) loves Romeo (a Montague); the houses of Capulet and Montague are sworn and eternally feuding families. (Think along the lines of Hatfields and McCoys or Bloods and Crips.) Montague being "the wrong sort" … (2 comments)
