downtown seattle: Seattle skies are still the bluest to me. - 02/17/17 04:10 PM
Funny how times change... It seems everyone is talking about Seattle these days, but back in 1968 us locals were enamored with a new television series, Here Comes the Brides. It was a story of the lonely lumberjack pioneer days of the 1860s around Elliott Bay and the Bolt Brother’s scheme to recruit available women from New Bedford, Massachusetts to settle here and marry.
I had to refresh my memory and did a little digging to rediscover the cast included Joan Blondell, Bobby Sherman, and David Soul. I don’t remember the series much except for the fact it was totally corny, but … (23 comments)

downtown seattle: Seattle's first downtown. - 06/26/15 04:10 AM
I love driving down 1st Avenue through Seattle. I’m entering Pioneer Square as I cross Columbia Street and look up to my left to see one of my favorite icons of the city, the Smith Tower. This is the oldest skyscraper and neighborhood in downtown Seattle.
In those very early days Seattle became a booming timber town thanks to Henry Yesler who built the first (steam powered) sawmill in the area in 1853 at the end of Mill Street (now Yesler Way) on Elliott Bay. Yesler Way served many purposes back then and probably foremost, the sawmill was the first center of … (10 comments)

downtown seattle: Cranes and Crows - 04/15/15 03:14 AM
Friday's Fotos: Cranes and Crows
Two things you’ll see a lot of these days in Seattle is construction cranes and crows. There's no real connection between the two, you’ll just see a lot of both.
In late December 2014 there were 93 active projects downtown Seattle. I’m sure there are many more started now that we’re into spring 2015. There's a total of 9,190 apartments, 876 condo units and 1,229 hotel rooms underway. Not all are directly downtown, but close.

downtown seattle: Good Morning Seattle... - 02/10/15 02:27 AM
I’m headed into the city this morning for appointments and I love this view of downtown as you enter the International District from North Beacon Hill over the Jose Rizal Memorial Bridge.
To the left in the skyline cluster is Seattle’s oldest skyscraper, the Smith Tower. Built in 1914, the 38 story building was until 1931, the tallest building west of the Mississippi. The cities’ sky high honor now resides with the 76 story (943 foot tall) Columbia Center Tower completed in 1985. I worked just one block away back then and it was amazing to watch this building go up.

downtown seattle: Yes... it rains here. - 12/03/14 04:40 AM
November, Autumn in Seattle I love the Pacific Northwest! Especially this time of year when the weather oscillates back and forth between clear cool sunny days and blustery windy rainy gray one’s.
A week or so before Thanksgiving I was driving through downtown Seattle on one of those windy rainy days. That wind was really blowing off the bay and the trees were swaying. I’ve mentioned in previous posts that I often avoid the freeway. It’s a lot more interesting to drive through the neighborhoods.
The fall colors linger yet they are losing their brightness and are fading for the season … (5 comments)

downtown seattle: The Arctic Club Seattle - 05/17/14 08:33 AM
The Arctic Club building in Seattle was built in 1916. It's now a Double Tree by Hilton Hotel. I worked on the 2nd floor for Northwestern Title Company from 1984 to 1990 when the building was owned by the City of Seattle.
It's a beautiful old building and I love the Northern Lights Dome Room. This huge room has a leaded-glass domed ceiling complete with Rococo motifs. The light is filtered through the domes colored glass and makes for a wonderful atmosphere. As a hotel, it's was beautifully restored in 2008 with great attention and detail to its original glory.

downtown seattle: Seattle: The Ship Canal Bridge - 04/07/14 11:11 AM
People forget that in the very early 1900’s our major mover pioneers recreated the entire ecosystem of Seattle for commerce and it affected communities for miles around. Back then there was no practical way by boat to get from Puget Sound to Lake Washington so the Army Core of Engineers dredged a ship canal from Shilshoel Bay at Ballard east through Salmon Bay, created the Ship Canal Locks into Lake Union and continued east through Portage Bay creating the Montlake Cut into Union Bay and Lake Washington.

What this did (more or less) was to level Lake Union and Lake … (9 comments)

downtown seattle: Seattle, transforming... - 04/04/14 11:05 AM
My work has me in Seattle several times over the past few weeks. I love going to town as we say around here, except during rush hour.
This first photo taken at 3:59 pm is on 9th Avenue looking south past Pacific Place from Olive Way at Two Union Square. I enjoy the way the building changes colors depending on the weather. The sun is out today and it’s blue, on rainy days it’s gray and you can see cloud reflections.

I’ve found it easier and more interesting when I’m north of downtown making my way home to Renton to … (7 comments)

downtown seattle: Friday's Foto: One Way on Stewart Street - 09/30/11 07:44 AM
Last week, I was driving to our HQ on Stewart Street in downtown Seattle. Changes in work have created opportunities to visit areas of town I wouldn’t normally drive through.
This photo was taken with my Blackberry Curve 8330. Not to worry, my eyes are on the road! I fire away at random clicking off 50 or more a day. If one turns out I’m delighted. I thought this accidental capture was interesting.

downtown seattle: Urbanian Ramble - 10/24/10 08:56 AM
I know I know I know... It’s the city. Get over it.
I live in urbania. Renton, Washington. I’m like 12 to 13 miles from downtown Seattle, depending on the route I take. Since Seattle is the center of our Puget Sound megalopolis, work often takes me to the city.
Albeit many of you live in more populous areas than I, regardless, I’m having my own little private Seattle moment about parking and related things this morning...
Okay... It’s a little bit of a rant.
I drive a 2007 Ford Explorer. I love this truck. It’s the best vehicle I’ve ever … (14 comments)
