family: Dad and Grandpa - 10/15/15 10:41 AM
I wasn’t even a sparkle in my Dad’s eye in 1936. He still had high school to get through then after graduating from Renton High in 1940 he was off to the Army and World War II. Dad was sent to England, the Normandy Invasion, and later served under Patton in the Battle of the Bulge.
This is my family (circa 1936) with Grandpa George Fabre, left, Grandma Pauline, her mom, my Great Grandma Celine Boulanger Longville Delaurenti, Grandpa’s brother Jules and his sister (playing the accordion) Louise, my  Dad, Al, and his older brother, my Uncle Georgie...
I’m thinking they're celebrating the purchase of … (44 comments)

family: Wake up call... - 07/24/15 05:16 PM
Somewhat ironically, I actually grew up about 2 1/2 miles from where I now live in Renton, Washington. We moved to the Earlington neighborhood in 1958 and it was the family home until we sold the place after Dad passed back in November of 1998. It was a challenge to let go.
Back in the day Renton was a small town with a population of about 12,000 or so. Our home was across the street from the “Little Woods” and west of that, down the alley behind the Shaw’s and a short zag on the path around the Hofmeister home, was the … (12 comments)

family: CAR WASH - 07/24/15 04:44 AM
Do you remember the first time you went through a car wash? I was at the Brown Bear on Rainier in Renton this week. Hey it’s summertime and I had a bunch of dead bugs splattered across the windshield and real dusty, I’m thinking, “No way I can show up for my presentation tomorrow looking like this!”
As the attendant pops the big GO button and the roar and whir begin it triggers a memory of when my youngest daughter Paige was along for the first time. Her older siblings Shannon and Jeff had been through the car wash several times. For … (29 comments)

family: The Larson's of Spokane. - 06/24/15 03:18 PM
The Larson’s of Spokane. This is my Grandma and Grandpa Larson, Edna and Harvey and (L to R) Aunties' Meldred and Marjorie and my Mom, Mary Lee (1961) at the Larson home in Hillyard, Spokane.
My cousin sent this old photo to me that I haven't since the 1960's and I’m cracking up because looking at my Mom at just 5 feet tall (and the youngest) she’s the tallest of the sisters!
Grandpa Harvey was born in 1874 in Sweden, came to the US as a kid of about 6 and grew up in and around Cadillac, Michigan. As a young man he worked … (17 comments)

family: So now that 'now' has past. - 06/24/15 12:39 PM
We’re standing on the dock at the Renton Rowing Center on Father’s Day afternoon. It’s sunny and beautiful and the views over Lake Washington from here are simply gorgeous. The skyline you see way in the background is looking north to downtown Bellevue, that’s about 11 miles from where we’re standing.
We just had a scrumptious lunch at El Burrito Loco nearby and totally stuffed we decide to walk it off at the Cedar River Trail Park. I’m hanging with my son Jeff, my youngest daughter Paige, and her boyfriend Nick.
Since I’m dad and it’s my day, I take full advantage of … (14 comments)

family: My first home. - 06/11/15 08:27 AM
I so relate to young first time homebuyers. It’s a big step. I was there once upon a 30 years ago and a late starter to boot by many standards at 36 years old.
I learned a lot then and over the years like:
1. Never buy a corner lot that sits below the street.
2. Always keep up with repairs because they will compound themselves.
3. Pick your own real estate broker to represent you. Not one you don’t know but happens to be a friend of a friend who knows your family and the seller.
4. Check your city master zoning plan and the … (28 comments)

family: Throwback Thursdays: Pioneers in a Digital Age - 08/27/14 03:36 AM
This was 15 years ago. We spent the day at the Puyallup Fair (The Washington State Fair) in Puyallup, Washington...
We just had to stop by one of those photo booths and have our Pioneer Family photo taken.
I am so blessed with wonderful kids. They’ve all grown up to be such talented wonderful human beings.
Shannon, behind me, just moved to Post Falls, Idaho with her fiance Cameron. They lived in Kapaa on Kauai, Hawaii for a couple of years where she worked at the St. Regis Princeville Resort as a licensed massage therapist who specializes in Deep Tissue, Lomi … (19 comments)

family: How'd you kids grow up so fast? - 07/09/14 01:12 PM
I’ve been a little remiss about my blogging duties this past week. Yet it has been a very magical wonderful week. For the first time in quite a while I got to spend time with all of my kids, grandkids, and our extended family.
Everyone's in town for my granddaughter Tyfannie's wedding... We kicked off the wedding week with a BBQ in Kent on June 29th at Bev and Keith’s. My granddaughter Tyffanie and her fiance Wade Rogers were married on July 6th in Port Angeles.

family: A Precious Family Treasure - 06/14/14 06:46 AM
Those of you that know me and my musings online know I like to write a lot about my local surroundings here in the Pacific Northwest. I also like to share technology and online resources I find and use and thoughts about the evolving social web.
But over the past two or three years especially, my online conversations about people and places, local events and history, and my travels have produced the most interesting discoveries, engagement, and opportunities for personal and business connections.
My conversations about the Renton Library, The Library over the River, got me a phone call from … (14 comments)
