grab bag: The Grab Bag - Life Hacks - 02/05/17 08:38 AM
Weird Twitter has become pretty unreliable lately as a source of humor - all my funny people have become distracted from what's really important - making me, and sometimes you, laugh - and are mostly doing politics. That's a bad move - lots of people are doing politics, and we need to laugh now more than ever. So until the funny people regain their perspective, the editors of the Grab Bag have been searching the internet for other sources of fun.

Today, we are pleased to bring you some selections from Reddit's Shitty Life Pro Tips, a site devoted to some of … (24 comments)

grab bag: The Grab Bag - The Boys Are Back! - 01/08/17 07:28 AM
Weird Twitter hasn't been a very happy place for a couple of months now. It was pretty hard to find anything to laugh about - my funny people were in a snit about the election, and their sense of humor went on strike for the holidays. But I'm pleased to announce that they're getting over it and back to what they do best - cracking me up. Hopefully, some of these tweets will crack you up too.

grab bag: Happy New Year from the Grab Bag - 01/01/17 08:51 AM
The editors and staff of the Grab Bag extend to you our best wishes for a happy and prosperous 2017, as well as our hope that the coming year will provide us with plentiful opportunities for laughter and mirth. For an early start on that, here's a sprinkling of Weird Twitter:

"That tufted headboard is from West Elm." - women watching porn
— @rachelichtman

How To Win at Paleontology: Shock the scientific community with your discovery that dinosaurs may have been skeletons.

grab bag: The Grab Bag - Sunday Funnies and Weird Twitter - 12/04/16 08:47 AM
The Grab Bag once had aspirations of being a regular weekly post. However, the recent disappearance of humor from the internet has made that unlikely. It's mostly all politics 24-7 now, and very little of that is truly funny. And in any event, Grab Bag editorial policy prohibits political content unless a) it oh so subtly suggests a point of view that we agree with, and b) we can publish it without pissing anyone off.

We're still going to be digging around for interesting and funny content to share, but until further notice, the Grab Bag will be an occasional affront to … (27 comments)

grab bag: The Grab Bag - Slim Pickins - 11/20/16 12:59 AM
The internet is a less happy place these days - most of my funny people aren't in a mood to make jokes right now, and almost everything is politics. Perhaps understandable, but that's not the Grab Bag's thing, so we had to dig deep for this week's compilation of useless but mildly entertaining nonsense, and we even found something that might be useful to you - we'll get that out of the way first:

The New York Public Library Digital Collections
We're always on the lookout for good free images to use in our blogs, so it's great news that the New York … (17 comments)

grab bag: The Grab Bag - Free Laugh - 11/12/16 10:52 PM
The last week has been an, um, interesting one, and looking back, the Grab Bag editorial staff has noticed that among it's other, um, characteristics, it was a week notably short of humor. While we acknowledge that these are serious times indeed, if we lose our ability to laugh, then no matter who we are, we have lost more than we can afford.

So, with that in mind, here's a really good laugh to help keep your chi centered, your pH balanced, and a smile on your face.

grab bag: The Grab Bag - Jigsaw, Life Hacks, Sunday Funnies, and Weird Twitter - 10/30/16 01:07 AM
Welcome to the Grab Bag, an assortment of delights curated from an internet spiraling rapidly out of control. We have a full plate this week - a sure sign I've been wasting way too much time doing anything except work - so let's just get on with it, shall we?
Please enjoy responsibly.

Working with Jigsaw
This is a good way to start off - Chris Capel would like to introduce you to his latest creation, Jigsaw, your nightmare office mate. And if you like this, here's a link to Living with Jigsaw.

grab bag: The Grab Bag - A Terrifying Ride - 10/23/16 12:09 AM
Weird Twitter is just too clogged up with political stuff these days to offer a good selection of traditional offensive humor. We'll get back to that after the election, but for today, the Grab Bag is going to return to its roots - people doing frightening things. Here's a Go-Pro video of Dan Atherton riding the Red Bull Hardline downhill mountain bike course. This one will wake you up better than a defibrillator followed by a triple espresso.

Welcome to The Grab Bag, an occasional and mostly random compendium of roadside litter scattered along the Information SuperHighway. Today, we're offering some Weird Twitter - right now, we probably all need a few laughs.

Please enjoy responsibly:

grab bag: The Grab Bag - Vernadsky Station - 10/01/16 11:26 PM
Last week, I ran across a cool article in Atlas Obscura about ten very inaccesible bars, and wasn't surprised to see Vernadsky Station topping their list. Mary and I had visited Vernadsky on our trip to Antarctica several years ago.

Vernadsky is a Ukrainian research station and its claim to fame, besides winning the Antarctica Soccer Cup twice, is that this is where the hole in the ozone layer was discovered. At that time, Vernadsky was owned by the British. When financial cutbacks forced the closure of the station, Britain was faced with two choices - completely disassemble and remove all … (45 comments)

grab bag: The Grab Bag - Early Fall Weird Twitter - 09/25/16 12:27 AM

Welcome to the Grab Bag, an occasional compilation of roadside debris from the Information Superhighway. This week we're featuring Weird Twitter, mostly because we were too lazy to look for other, better stuff.
Please enjoy these responsibly:

grab bag: The Grab Bag - Special Labor Day Mega-Edition!! - 09/04/16 11:47 PM
Labor Day is a tough one, like most Monday holidays. If you haven't been pacing yourself through the weekend, you're in danger of running out of stuff to do, and there's nothing much on TV that's going to get you through the day. So it's a perfect opportunity for you to waste some time immersing yourself in the silliness and irrelevance that is The Grab Bag's content of choice.

We have put together a special Grab Bag for you today, chock full of last week's gleanings from the less-visited nooks and crannies of the InterWeb. But first, a note on links: I … (32 comments)

grab bag: The Grab Bag - Acrophobia, Birds, Travel & Weird Twitter - 08/28/16 01:25 AM
This week, The Grab Bag returns to its normal format of including a few random but interesting items along with the all-important Weird Twitter. Please enjoy!

Zion National Park
The video below is a beautiful and unique video of a hike to the top of Angel's Landing in Zion National Park, using a GoPro pointed straight down. If you suffer from a mild case of acrophobia like me (the second rung of the ladder is my absolute limit), this is the stuff of nightmares.

grab bag: The Grab Bag - Mourning the Loss - 08/24/16 02:39 AM

This is the second day that begins with an absence and leaves me feeling hollow. My usual routine of pulling up Gawker first thing every morning, checking in several times a day - much like AR - and taking one last look before bedtime is no more. I am rudderless and adrift, and I'm sad.

Most of you probably didn't spend time with Gawker, and for good reason - it could be tasteless, rude and crude; it's political leanings were well to the left of the mainstream; and it occasionally published some stuff that was unconscionable and indefensible. On the other hand, … (36 comments)

grab bag: The Grab Bag - Twitter, Weird - 08/14/16 01:32 AM
Well, that's just great. Some of you have decided that Weird Twitter Grab Bags are a necessary part of your Sunday morning ritual, so now I have all this pressure to perform and it's freaking me out. I tossed and turned all last night worrying about how to feed this beast. It isn't easy, you know - every week, it's a struggle to stifle my tendencies to include content that is even more inappropriate than what I do use - a measure, dear reader, of my overwhelming concern for your tender sensibilities (as well as a desire not to get my … (20 comments)

grab bag: The Grab Bag - Git Yer Weird Twitter Right Here - 08/06/16 12:12 PM
I love when Sunday rolls around and I can forego the market reports and share some of the shameful tweets my favorite comedians, comedy writers and malcontents have posted in that strange little corner of the internet known as Weird Twitter. If you find these entertaining, you should consider some serious self-reflection about where it all went wrong for you, or ... you could check out my timeline @DickGreenberg for more.

grab bag: The Grab Bag - Harvest Wheat - 07/23/16 11:33 PM
The Grab Bag is customarily a compilation, made up of stuff I run into during a week of poking around my favorite nooks and crannies of the internet - Weird Twitter, TwistedSifter, Gizmodo, etc. And I did find a variety of cool/funny stuff last week. But this week's Bag has only one item, because perfection stands alone.
May this leave a long-lasting smile on your face:

grab bag: The Grab Bag Lite - 07/17/16 12:30 AM
I'm a bit distracted and rushed today, so this edition of the Grab Bag is kind-of a half-assed, lazy, phone-it-in effort, or what we call business as usual here at the plush, well-appointed Grab Bag editorial offices. But you might find a bit of diversion or a laugh or two anyhow.

grab bag: The Grab Bag - Lessons Learned - 07/10/16 01:43 AM
I just spent almost a week in the tender embrace of the health care system, and I while I can't really recommend it for the food or accommodations, those didn't ultimately matter very much - they did their job well, got me better and I did learn some important stuff from the experience.

grab bag: The Grab Bag - Money - 07/01/16 12:22 PM
The Grab Bag isn't always fun and games. Every once in a long while, something serious comes along that needs to be shared, and this one is more likely to leave you with a furrowed brow than a smile.

As an economist, I've always been bemused by the concept of money - inherently worthless paper, base metal or now computer bits that make up what is really no more than a social construct yet is central to so much of, well, everything. This is especially true of real estate, where it's our prime measure and the fuel for our markets. … (47 comments)
