pets: On The Road To Recovery - 04/21/15 01:30 AM
It has been a tough month for Lulu. She had surgery on her knee four weeks ago today for a ruptured ligament. The surgery went very well - she has had minimal pain, and is on the road to a full recovery.

But that's not an easy road - she's confined to her crate during the day, and to the main level of our home when we're here. At night, Grover and I are sleeping in the guest room with her on a mattress on the floor, since our master bedroom is upstairs, and stairs are a big NoNo - nobody … (21 comments)

pets: NPP LLC Appoints New VP of nHR - 12/13/14 01:36 AM
New Paradigm Partners LLC is pleased to announce the appointment of Sheldon Greenberg to the newly created position of Vice President of non-Human Resources. (Okay, I heard a few of you muttering about nepotism - it's our company and we can hire whoever we want, so there!)

Filling this long-empty spot on the organizational chart should address the appalling lack of supervision previously given to the canine staff, who have been running amok, shirking their duties, and generally exhibiting bad attitudes. The owners just haven't had time lately to do more than throw balls and frisbees, host walks … (14 comments)

pets: My Tarantula Exploded! - 08/01/13 04:05 AM
With feigned sympathy, Mary met me with the following as I arrived home yesterday.
"Honey, I'm really sorry - Quentin is dead. It's really, really bad. It's looks like she exploded."
When she got to the exploded part, I knew Quentin was okay. Quentin, if you don't already know, is our compliance and collections officer, a lovely and docile (unless you're not in compliance or owe me money) Chilean Rose tarantula.
I had noticed yesterday morning that she was acting strangely, doing something that looked a lot like spider yoga, and I wondered if she was moulting again. Spiders grow by … (27 comments)

pets: Puppy Report - May 5, 2013 - 05/05/13 07:15 AM
This is all going by way too fast, and the Criminal Element is changing every day. They're fully weaned now and Lulu is experiencing a mixture of relief - those teeth are sharp! - and longing for her babies. As soon as she dries up completely, she'll get over the longing part quick enough.
Meanwhile, the monsters think people are really cool - they bring food, are good to chew and climb on, and will pet them to sleep. They're getting lots of visitors and are very well socialized, and life is a lovely cycle of eat-sleep-play. And every day, their … (26 comments)

pets: It's A Wrap! - 02/10/13 03:54 AM

This is MacKenzie, who is my Lab Moose's sister. Our friends Bill & Linda Gillett recently came home to find her all wrapped up, unharmed but very unhappy. Stuff like this runs in the family (and probably the breed as well), so it was funny but not even a bit surprising. MacKenzie is a real sweetie, and has lots of other talents, like climbing fences and eating crab-apples. I've known her since the day she was born - I midwifed her and picked her out as the special one for Bill & Linda. It's good to see family traditions continue.

pets: A Moving Tribute - 11/23/12 06:01 AM
I have to admit that I stopped paying a lot of attention to popular culture a while back, and when it comes to music, especially so. I had no idea until yesterday who Fiona Apple was. Today, I am a huge fan - and it's not because of her music (which I did seek out, listen to and enjoy very much).
Fiona Apple recently did something that I consider totally awesome and authentic: she cancelled her South American tour to be with her dog Janet, 14 years old and dying of Addison's Deisease. Her letter to her fans, posted on FB, … (25 comments)

pets: The Larimer Humane Society - A Wonderful Community Resource - 04/09/12 09:08 AM
The Larimer Humane Society is my favorite local charity. I've lived in the area for 25 years and I've watched them provide a huge array of animal care services to our community, always maintaining hig quality standards and a level of compassion and concern that is truly outstanding.
I've also had a number of occasions to interact with their programs and staff, and I'm profoundly grateful for their commitment and professionalism.* We're extremely fortunate to have this organization - an independent, non-profit funded by donations, fees and grants, and managed by a community board of directors - in northern Colorado.

pets: A Great Pet Boarding Option in Fort Collins CO - 04/06/12 03:29 AM
Sometimes we have to leave our pets behind when we're traveling away from Fort Collins CO, and we're always concerned that the guys are comfortable, well cared-for and safe. Over the years, we tried a lot of different boarding options, most of which we were unhappy with for a variety of reasons. And it really isn't as much fun sitting on the beach when you're worried about your pets.
We have recently found a great solution - Come-Play-Stay at South Mesa Veterinary Hospital. South Mesa has been our choice for veterinary care for many years now, and we were thrilled when … (9 comments)

pets: Retrievers At Work - 04/03/12 02:47 AM
Our Lab Moose is a great retriever - or at least he would be if he were an only dog.
His main job on Sunday morning is to get the NY Times - but he needs supervision, enthusiastically provided by our small emergency back-up dog, Mario - who nominally is a Rat Terrier, but got his dog chops exclusively from Labs. Here's a brief clip of the two of them at work.
The problem is Lulu, our other Lab, 2 years old, who loves to retrieve - but only if it's something Moose already has. Since we want to actually read … (16 comments)

pets: 3 Extra Hours With My Favorites - 11/03/11 05:25 AM
If I had an extra 3 hours each week, deciding how I would want to spend it would be pretty easy. I'd just have to identify the activity I most regret missing out on - and that would be taking more morning walks with Mary and our dogs, Moose & Lulu - our Labs - and Mario - our small emergency backup dog.

We live just a bit out in the country. Our neighborhood has three lakes - one owned by the HOA and two that we buy recreation rights to use - so we have about 8 miles of … (12 comments)

pets: Remembering Guido - 10/01/11 05:28 PM
Last month, I posted the obituary for my Lab, Lilly who we lost a bit over a year ago. Sharing her with our friends on ActiveRain made me feel better, and since she was one of a pair, I owe it to Guido to introduce him to you as well:
Guido, Famed Arctic Explorer, Dead at 98
Don Guido Campagnolo passed on peacefully on Friday, June 6, 2008 after an eventful and rewarding life.
Guido was a member of the successful 2002 & 2004 expeditions to the Arctic Circle, serving as second-in-command on both trips, during which he conducted extensive investigations … (11 comments)

pets: Remembering Lilly - 08/16/11 03:25 AM
We lost Lilly a little over a year ago, and I wrote this shortly afterward. I've been thinking about her a lot lately and wanted to share a bit of her with the people who might read our blog:

While others mourned, stuffed animals everywhere breathed a great sigh of relief at the news of the passing of their archnemesis, Lilly Greenberg. Ever since her stellar performance at the 2004 International Stuffed Animal Olympics, where she won 4 gold medals - in appendage removal, squeaking, both random and sustained, and strewing - she has haunted their nightmares in the form of … (15 comments)

pets: The Flesh May Be Weak, But The Spirit Is Willing (and Eager, Too!) - 07/28/11 03:15 AM
As I was driving in to work this morning, I passed my neighbor walking her dogs. I really admire her dedication to her animals’ happiness. Her oldest has some arthritis problems and wouldn’t be able to do the morning walk without some help, but that’s no reason to leave him at home.

Every dog deserves a great owner, and these two Golden Retrievers hit the jackpot.

pets: Meet Mario - 06/07/11 09:54 AM

This is Mario, Mary's small emergency back-up dog. Intelligent looking chap, is he not? He has a brain the size of half a walnut, but the heart of a lion.
When Mary isn't around, he acts just like a Labrador and hangs with the big guys. But when she is around, he becomes a complete lap dog, and just wants to be with his mommy.
He has ambitions to be a famous dog, so I told him I'd put him on the internet.
