travel: Wordless Wednesday: Keep Calm... - 04/26/17 01:19 PM

Our friends Steve and Jane Bailey, with whom we recently traveled to St. Vincents & The Grenadines, are currently in Morocco, and sent us this sign they encountered in Marrakesh. We're looking forward to traveling with Steve and Jane again soon - Steve is a retired NY Times travel editor, and knows where all the good stuff is.

travel: Where We Were - 12/06/15 11:38 PM
We're back, after 12 days of a much needed disconnect, rested and ready to jump back into the grind. For most of our trip, we had no access to phone or Internet connections, and no contact with the outside world, which left us free to fully enjoy our amazing surroundings.

Before we left, I told you that we were going someplace where the official currency was the US dollar, which narrowed our destination down quite a bit. Some Google searching would have pointed you to several countries besides the US, with Ecuador among them.

After arriving in Quito, we spent a couple of days … (27 comments)

travel: Silent Sunday - Monkey Business - 12/20/14 10:52 PM
Finding monkeys in the Amazon rainforest demonstrated the amazing skill of our naturalist guides. We would be boating down a tributary in the skiffs when one of the guides would hold up his hand to stop the boats - "I hear monkeys". I have no idea how they could hear anything over the buzzing of the outboard motors, but when we would scan the treetops back from the water, there they would be. Sometimes, they would put on a show, and sometimes thay would be really hard to spot.

travel: Amazon - The Movie - 12/10/14 01:41 AM
I'm still slogging through the task of editing the 1000+ photos from our recent trip to the headwaters of the Amazon River. Things like the actual business of real estate keep getting in the way, but I was able to take some time last weekend and yesterday to put together this short video of the trip.

A couple of notes:
I had taken the video camera along with a monopod, hoping for a lot more video footage than I actually got. But hand-held shots with long telephoto were just too jittery and by the time I'd get the monopod … (45 comments)

travel: Up The River - 12/01/14 12:24 AM
Three years ago, Mary and I traveled to Antarctica, and the experience hooked us on adventure travel. So this year, for Thanksgiving week, we spent 8 days exploring the upper Amazon river in Peru. It was a fabulous trip, everything we could have wished for and more.

travel: Christmas In Paris - 12/24/12 02:00 AM

Several years ago, Mary & I went to Paris for Christmas. It was a wonderful trip - no tourists anywhere and the French were all in excellent spirits, friendly and accommodating. There was no one at the Louvre or Versaille, the restaurants were happy to feed us awesome food, and the apartment we rented in Montmarte was tiny but fabulous. Mostly, though, it was fascinating to experience the Christmas holiday in a totally different context - it was much less about commercialism, and much more about the special meaning of the season.
On Christmas eve, we had a wonderful … (32 comments)

travel: Jougla Point Panoramic - 12/21/12 06:55 AM

There's not a lot of snow on the ground right now, and no more coming in before Christmas. So I decided to share this panoramic from Jougla Point on the Antarctic Peninsula from our trip a couple of years ago. One thing about that place - there was plenty of snow!
The panoramic was made with a new toy I'm playing with - Photosynth, free from Microsoft, which a bunch of members have previously blogged about - it looks like a good way to incorporate panoramic photos in a blog post. If you're interested in using this for real … (15 comments)

travel: Heat getting you down? - 07/03/11 06:08 AM

This is a photo of Vernadsky Research Station on the Antarctic Peninsula taken last November. Vernadsky is run by the Ukraine and does year-round atmospheric research - it is the place where the hole in the ozone layer was first detected.
When the photo was taken, it was early spring down there. It's full blown winter right now, could be in the high minus 50's today, but Vernadsky's winter complement of staff - 11 Ukrainian scientists and 3 maintenance staff - are probably practicing - their soccer team won the Antarctic Cup last year. The station was a very interesting place … (3 comments)
