For you history buffs... Eighteen years before cars hit the roads in Victoria, licence plates were being used. They were first issued in 1884 to operators of hackney carriages (taxis). The story goes that hackney operators were charging exorbitant fares to carry tourists through the town. The city set charges for in-city travel (25 cents) and out of city travel ($1.00), but operators were charging as much as $2.00 for travel within the city. Rates were not posted in the carriages. The 17th Annual RBC Homeownership Study conducted recently reveals that 10% of Canadians plan to purchase a home within the next two years as compared to 7% two years ago. The RBC study, conducted by Ipsos Reid, found that 91 percent of Canadians think that home ownership is a sound investment, the highest level in 12 years. "With the Canadian housing market showing continued vigour, it's not surprising that Canadians feel more confident in the long-term value of owning a home," said Robert Hogue, a senior economist with RBC. It was celebrated today with the 31st running of the GoodLife Fitness Victoria Marathon. Over 14,000 participants ran today--a record turnout. The Men's Marathon saw a new winner--Kenyan Philip Samoei--with a world record time of 2:23:24. James Lander from the US, but now living in Victoria, came in 2nd with a time of 2:23:57. My wife and I live in Cordova Bay in a Pan-Abode house built in 1962. We bought it in the summer of 2009. What is a Pan-Abode? It is a manufactured log home consisting of milled 4" x 6" Western Red Cedar timbers interconnected at the corners. Our homes receives various types of comments from family members and visitors. All are positive. No one has outright said they don't like it. A number of our guests have said that they thought Pan-Abodes are "dark". I just have to rub it in! There are often days in the fall here in Victoria when, if you own a convertible, you just have to put the "top down". We have just experienced such a couple of days. Termperatures reached well into the low to mid 20's C (mid 70's F). Now while that is no large feat for many cities of the world, it is well known that Victoria, BC has the best weather in Canada! My dog Tessa always enjoys "walkies", chasing the ball as well as a dip in the salt chuck. Our favourite place for such sport is … (3 comments)
