jack solloway: Recession? Surely you jest. - 01/21/16 02:59 AM
The stock market sell off that is occurring now has finally killed a few BUY side contracts at two of my local Fort Myers, Fl companies;  Security Title & Abstract and Right Choice Realty.  For this reason I thought I would write this piece.  Afterall,  people tend to get nervous when their 401k's get crushed by 20%+ in 60 days.
Did you know that since the great depression we've had a national recession on average every five years?  A recession is defined as (2) quarters of negative growth in a row. It's been SEVEN years since our last recession and we are likely due, sorta. … (1 comments)

Tragedy of the Commons
As far back as I can remember my goal when it came to my job was to over achieve first and ask for a raise second. I never thought that I should be compensated first and then because I am so grateful> overachieve as a reward to the boss that was smart enough to recognize my skills in advance.
With $15.00 hour minimum wage demands and everything is free, free, free.  What happened? Greece should have been the warning and example of what not to do as a Country and what happens when government keeps pitching benefits and cool sounding ideas to their electorate … (9 comments)

jack solloway: Tips for Decorating Small Spaces - 12/08/15 03:03 AM
City dwellers, college students, retirees and many others often choose to live in condos, apartments, lofts, or small homes. The key to maximizing these living quarters is to take advantage of the space that is available, making it functional while utilizing the right décor to create a roomier, airy feel. Here are some tips to help make this happen, wherever your small space might be.
Choosing a Color PaletteChoosing the proper color scheme is absolutely critical to small interior décor. Although obviously still a matter of personal preference, it's best to go with light colors throughout. It's not uncommon to see an entire space … (2 comments)

jack solloway: Adding Closet Space – What to Consider Before You Start - 12/02/15 01:48 AM
When you have more items to store than closet space, something's got to give. Building and installing a closet is a fairly low-cost solution that the average adult is capable of doing. In a weekend's time, with a little planning and knowledge, you can transform an unused area into the most useful spot in the room.
Planning a ClosetIf you're going to build a closet, you might as well build it right. It's too late, after it's built, to wish you had done something different. Taking time to plan any home improvement project will prevent regrets later.
If you want to skip the DIY … (0 comments)

How to Bring Nature Inside

What do you love most about nature and the outdoors? Is it the first sign of spring blooms, the colorful autumn foliage, or maybe the smell of fresh cut grass on a warm summer day? Do you enjoy the soothing sound of a trickling creek or a bright blue sky on a sunny day?
Incorporate these organic elements into your décor and invite nature into your home.
Don't Block Natural ViewsOne of the easiest ways to invite nature into your home is to ensure a direct connection through glass doors and windows. Leave them undressed to welcome in sunlight … (2 comments)

Digging for Gold – Investing in Condemned Properties
To some people, broken windows, dilapidated roofs or collapsing porches mean trouble. People like Kenny Rushing, a Tampa, Florida-based real estate investor, see dollar signs.
"More than 60 percent of the houses I have bought in Tampa were condemned properties," says Rushing. "I have yet to lose money on those."
How Properties get CondemnedLocal authorities condemn buildings for a variety of reasons. In some cases, the government wants to build something in its place and will condemn the property as part of an eminent domain proceeding. Or, it could be a construction, maintenance, or pest issue … (0 comments)

jack solloway: Furnish your home for less. - 10/20/15 10:34 PM
Starting out with a "blank slate" can be both a blessing and a curse. The blessing comes if you have enough money to furnish your home with whatever you want from wherever you choose. Furnishing a home on a shoestring, though, takes creativity, an eye for a good value, and possibly some elbow grease.
While some discount stores, such as Ikea, sell inexpensive new furnishings, careful shoppers can find better quality for less money with used furnishings. Here are a few ideas for getting what you need at dramatically discounted prices.

America.  The Gated Community.
For the sake of imagination let's imagine that we all live in a large gated community called America.  The community has gates on the streets leading in.   Everyone who pays the HOA dues (taxes) gets the benefits of a pool, weight room, secure environment, and club house.   Our children play in the park, swim in the pool, and use the fitness room at their leisure in exchange for our dues.  Our invited friends enjoys these perks as well.
Why would anyone living in this community want the front gates to be insecure, left open,  and outsiders who do not live in the … (0 comments)

jack solloway: What Traits Do Salespeople Often Have in Common? - 08/05/15 12:06 AM
What traits are most common amongst the best sales people?
Researchers for the Behavioral Sciences Research Press studied sales production for more than 25 years.  Their work revealed that most successful salespeople share two characteristics.
(1.) They contact more prospective buyers than less successful salespeople do.
(2.) They ask for the order more often than less successful salespeople do.

Sounds simple enough, right?   Surprising Research Findings:
46% of salespeople ask for the order only once before giving up
24% ask twice before they shy away
14% give it a third try
12% are brave enough to ask a fourth time before they quit
So what is the secret to achieving … (4 comments)

jack solloway: America. What a Country. - 07/30/15 10:59 PM
What a country we have. America produces an unbelievable opportunity for all that are willing to work hard, educate themselves, and pursue their dreams. Amazing how the media has trained everyone to be a victim through this recession/downturn. Victim of poverty. Victim of racism. Victim of circumstances. Victim of a bad loan, the terms of which I never bothered to read?  Victim. Victim. Victim.
Above is a picture of the home I grew up in.

jack solloway: Sellers Behaving Badly: The Top 3 Ways to Turn Off a Buyer - 06/08/15 09:40 PM
Not all real estate transactions turn sour. In fact, few do. But once in a while, a bad apple ends up either selling or buying a home, and can throw the entire transaction into chaos.
From buyers allowing their children to run wild through a house they're viewing to sellers trying to hide home defects, the potential to behave badly in a real estate transaction is ever-present.
Let's take a look at some of the ways homeowners sabotage the sale of their homes.
Dirty HousesIf you've ever sold a car instead of trading it in, you probably spent some time spiffing it up: cleaning … (0 comments)

The 6 (Not-So-Simple) Steps to Securing a Home Loan
From the word "mortgage" to the methods used by lenders to determine how much to loan, the home loan process can be confusing to first timers. In fact, one third of the respondents to a 2011 Wall Street Journal survey of homebuyers said that the most difficult part of buying a home was understanding the loan process.
It can also be quite stressful, especially when you've got your eye on a cute Craftsman bungalow and are waiting on pins and needles to learn if you qualify to purchase it.
Let's take a look at the conventional home loan … (0 comments)

Much Ado About Mulch: Everything Homeowners Need To Know
Mulch was nature's idea long before it became man's. Fallen leaves, pine needles, rotting wood and vegetation, decaying flowers, ripe fruit, rocks rising to the Earth's surface – the environment naturally produces and disperses "mulch," adding a protective coating to the ground.
Knowing the various types of mulch and understanding how best to use them will enable you to assist Mother Nature and easily beautify your lawn and garden.
Why Should You Mulch?Mulching your soil might just be the most important thing you can do for your property – not only for the earth itself, … (0 comments)

Bed Bugs: How to Evict Them from Your Home
Believe it or not, bed bugs are an ancient problem. Bed bugs, lice and other parasitic insects thrived through the Dark Ages when hygiene was poor, people lived close together, and knowledge of why things happened was based more on superstition than fact.
After World War II, until 1972 when the use of the pesticide DDT was banned, bed bugs almost entirely disappeared, with remnants seen mostly in poorer countries. Today, unfortunately, bed bugs are making a comeback. Only knowledge of how to avoid and (failing that) combat them can prevent the bed bug's bite … (3 comments)

How to Sell Your Home Despite Having Lousy Neighbors
A shaken Rebecca Rand said the bulldozer ripped right through her kitchen. Another neighbor, Mary Davis, upon receipt of a frantic call from her husband, ran from her home just before the colossal machine demolished it.
While good fences are said to make good neighbors, it was a fence that set Barry Swegle off. This particular fence was erected by a neighbor, lining the driveway Swegle used to get to his property. It was a long-standing dispute and Swegle finally snapped. He used a logging bulldozer to damage or destroy several outbuildings, a truck, a … (0 comments)

3 Things to Think About Before Going FSBO
Quick: Off the top of your head, what can a real estate agent do to sell a house that you can't do?
"Frankly, I don't think a Realtor® does much that I can't do myself," a New Jersey homeowner told CBS News. After all, real estate agents just stick a sign in the yard, hold an open house or two, and fill out a couple of papers, right? Since you, too, can perform these duties, why not sell the house yourself and keep the commission money?
This is a fallacy many Americans operate under when judging … (1 comments)

Creative Design Ideas for Themed Childrens' Bedrooms
There are many exciting ideas you can play around with when planning a themed design for your child's bedroom. When picking out décor and choosing a theme, be sure to have fun, be creative and, most importantly, let the child's individual personality and interests be your inspiration.
Be mindful of what is age-appropriate and also choose décor that your child won't outgrow quickly, or that could go out of style in a year's time. Rather than following fleeting trends, lean towards a design with an originality that matches your child. Boundless options exist and, … (2 comments)
