first time buyers: Pep's Umbrella Repair Shop in Paris, France - 04/11/12 10:10 AM

I took this photo during my trip to Paris last year.  This is a small umbrella repair shop - yes, he repairs umbrellas!  In the US, we tend to throw things away when they break, but in Paris, and really throughout Europe and the UK, it seems that people actually care about their possessions and try to make them last by repairing them.  What a wonderful concept.  I found many small boutique-type shops in Paris that specialized in crafts or repairs, something that is becoming a rarity in the US.  And the shopkeepers take a lot of pride in their … (5 comments)

first time buyers: Why Should I Get Pre-Qualified? - 02/21/11 07:17 AM
Why should I get pre-qualified?    Wouldn't it be better if I find a house first and then talk to a lender? As a buyer, it is wise to get pre-qualified before you go out looking for a home.  There are many reasons, but the most important reasons are that it benefits you, your agent, and the seller.First, the most important person it benefits, of course, is you.  The mortgage prequalification step is a relatively simple one, but it is an important one.  It begins the process of formally applying for a mortgage, and it gives everyone involved--especially you--a clear sense of the … (7 comments)

first time buyers: What is Radon and How Do I Reduce It? - 02/12/11 10:15 AM
Many homeowners are increasingly concerned about the possible presence of radon in their homes - and with good reason. You can't see, smell, or taste radon, but it is the leading cause of lung cancer deaths among nonsmokers in North America, and it could be present at a dangerous level in your home. The good news is that if radon is detected, steps can be taken to remedy the problem.WHAT IS THE SOURCE OF RADON?Radon is naturally occurring odorless, colorless, radioactive gas that is formed by the ongoing decay of uranium in soil, rocks, sediments, and even well or ground water. … (3 comments)

first time buyers: What is a Short Sale? - 01/01/11 09:41 AM
I get asked this question very often -- what is a short sale?  It is easy to answer by sending someone a link to a website or several websites that explain a short sale.  Here is how the Columbus Board of Realtors explains it:
"The term "Short Sale" is used in the real estate business to describe a situation where there is more debt owing against a property than the current market value of the property, and where the seller is unwilling or unable to bring sufficient liquid assets to the closing to cure all deficiencies. In other words, the Seller … (0 comments)

first time buyers: 7 Reasons to Own Your Own Home - 09/09/09 02:05 AM
There are 81 days left until the deadline of November 30 when the first time homebuyer tax credit ends.  Here are 7 good reasons to invest in a home of your own:
1.  Tax breaks. The U.S. Tax Code lets you deduct the interest you pay on your mortgage, your property taxes, as well as some of the costs involved in buying your home.
2.  Appreciation. Real estate has long-term, stable growth in value. While year-to-year fluctuations are normal, median existing-home sale prices have increased on average 6.5 percent each year from 1972 through 2005, and increased 88.5 percent over the … (2 comments)

first time buyers: Homebuyer Tax Credit - 02/18/09 04:29 AM
Here are the details on the First-Time HomeBuyer Tax Credit
1. $8,000 for new buyers: The tax credit included in the economic stimulus legislation is much narrower than the $15,000 proposal. This credit is equivalent to 10 percent of the purchase price of the home--although it's capped at $8,000--and applies only to first-time home buyers and principal residences. But unlike an earlier $7,500 home buyer tax credit, this one does not have to be repaid.
2. First time buyers defined: For the purpose of this legislation, a "first-time home buyer" is someone who hasn't owned a principal residence for three years before buying … (0 comments)
