real estate training: Unlocking Real Estate Terms: "Severalty" - 07/10/13 12:40 AM
In this new blog series, we’ll be discussing the meaning and origin of some common (and some not-so-common) real estate terms. The language of real estate transactions is filled with words used nowhere else—words that often sound archaic, foreign, and legalistic. So why do we use them and where do they come from? Let’s find out!
One of the first terms a student comes across in our real estate courses is "ownership in severalty," which refers to ownership shared with no one else: a single individual (or business entity) owns the property. This contrasts, of course, with joint tenancy, tenancy in … (0 comments)

real estate training: Happy Martin Luther King Day! - 01/21/13 06:03 AM
If you’re a real estate professional, the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. has a daily impact on your career. We all know that in his life, Martin Luther King, Jr.was an activist and a leader of the American civil rights movement. He led the Montgomery Bus Boycott and helped lead the 1963 March on Washington. During the March on Washington, King delivered his "I Have a Dream" speech,in which he called for a color blind America, where citizens are treated equally regardless of the color of their skin.

When he was assassinated on April4, 1968, King’s fight to end … (0 comments)

real estate training: Book Review: The Honest Real Estate Agent - 11/29/12 03:52 AM
What does it mean to be an honest real estate agent? Mario Jannatpour’s book, The Honest Real Estate Agent: A Training Guide for a Successful First Year and Beyond as a Real Estate Agent, seeks to answer that question. This easy-to-read book is aimed at brand new agents or those considering a new real estate career. There are quite a few nuggets of wisdom for experienced agents as well, however, and it’s certainly worth a read even if you’ve been in the business for a few years. It’s also a good place to start if you are an experienced older agent … (1 comments)

real estate training: If you think your great-grandma went trick or treating, think again! - 10/31/12 12:30 AM
Remember when you couldn't wait for Halloween? You got to dress up as a princess, ninja, or scary monster and go out begging for candy! For many of us, trick or treating was a childhood staple, but (and this surprised us) trick or treating wasn't really common until the 1950s. Of course, the origins of Halloween itself go back much further than that.
The tradition of going door to door to ask for treats began in Great Britain and Ireland in the Middle Ages, where the poor would go "souling" on Hallowmas (November 1) to beg for food in return for … (5 comments)

real estate training: Restaurant Review: Persepolis - 08/14/12 01:48 AM
Today we’re reviewing a spot that is especially convenient for our Bellevue real estate students: Persepolis Specialties and Café, located right here in our office complex. Persepolis consists of a small specialty grocery store featuring Persian and Mediterranean items, and a café serving a rather eclectic mix of Persian, Thai, and American dishes. We tried the gyro sandwich (seasoned grilled meat, onion, lettuce, and tomatoes, wrapped in flatbread with cucumber-yogurt sauce) and the Persian kubideh sandwich (marinated ground beef kabobs with onions, lettuce, pickles, and tomatoes on a foot-long French roll). Both were tasty—and huge!
Other intriguing-sounding menu items included … (0 comments)

real estate training: Test-taking Tip: They’re Not Flashy, But They Do the Trick - 08/02/12 01:44 AM
Whether you went to grade school 15 years ago or 45, you probably used flashcards to help you memorize facts (like multiplication tables). While this kind of rote learning doesn’t replace critical thinking, it definitely has an important place in studying for a license exam. In fact, for the real estate student needing extra help with those pesky formulas, definitions, and other bits of information requiring straight memorization, nothing beats flashcards.
Why? Flashcards fire up your active recall. Active recall refers to the way your mind responds to a demand on your memory. Rather than simply reading and re-reading the … (0 comments)

real estate training: Stumped by an Exam Question? Best Bets for Guessing... - 05/24/12 01:07 AM
Contrary to popular belief, multiple choice questions aren’t always the easiest. Take a multiple choice question that’s open to more than one interpretation, throw in a couple of tricky answer choices, and if you’re not entirely on top of the material—sometimes even if you are—you’ve got a problem. That problem doubles if you tend to overanalyze everything. So, what do you do if you have absolutely NO CLUE how to answer a question on your real estate exam? Guess, of course! But there are good and bad ways to guess. Here are some proven strategies that can go a long way toward … (0 comments)

real estate training: Book Review: Home Seller Secrets - 05/04/12 03:44 AM
This month’s book, Home Seller Secrets: What Top Moving Realtors Already Know That Every Home Seller Should by B. Worthmoore, isn’t really a book for real estate agents; it’s for home sellers. Still, you may want to pick up a few copies anyway, because this is the kind of book that can help you prepare sellers for the realities of listing their home.

You won't find simple to-do lists here (“clean up personal items,” “plant some flowers”). The book explains to sellers why these steps are important and how they can help sell the home. And let’s face it: sometimes you … (0 comments)

real estate training: Test-Taking Tip: Give Yourself a Tune-Up - 05/02/12 07:14 AM
Do you listen to music when you study? Over the years, different theories have touted the benefits of listening to classical music during study time to enhance mental performance. You may recall the Mozart Effect, the idea that classical music boosted the intelligence of very young children.
More recent research suggests that music may actually harm your ability to study, at least sometimes. For instance, some studies have found that listening to music while you try to memorize a list of items in a certain order hinders your efforts, regardless of the type of music or whether you even like the music … (1 comments)

real estate training: What's Your Favorite Real Estate Tech? - 04/27/12 01:40 AM
A couple of months ago we surveyed our Fundamentals class asking why people were going into a real estate these days. (You can see our blog entry summarizing the results here.) With the real estate market picking up a bit, we’re inspired!

A few weeks ago we spotted an article in Inman News summarizing the results of a survey on tech use among real estate agents. The story reported that “75 percent of the 110 real estate professionals who participated  . . . selected ‘iPad presentation’ as the marketing tool they would most like to have.”

This got … (0 comments)

real estate training: Stop Right There! Your Job’s Not Done Yet - 04/24/12 05:55 AM
Finally! You’ve worked hard, handled negotiations and last-minute problems, calmed your client’s nerves, and juggled all the paperwork. The sale finally closes and you get your commission check. Is your job done? If you answer “yes,” you’re missing out on future referrals and income. In this blog post, Dirk Zeller talks about creating “After-the-Sale Service,” and how you can lay the groundwork for years of success in the real estate business.

real estate training: Test Taking Tip: Exam Day Eating Strategies - 04/17/12 01:23 AM
We all know that good nutrition helps us live a healthier, longer life. But you may not know that that there are some foods that should be eaten—and avoided—because of their impact on your test-taking performance. In other words, the food choices you make immediately before your real estate exam can impact your performance significantly. So, what’s best on exam day? Here are a few pointers:

Hydrate and decaffeinate: One of the basic requirements for good mental performance is that you’re adequately hydrated. This means opting for healthy beverages. The best choice is water, and fruit juices are okay as long as they contain … (0 comments)

real estate training: Restaurant Review: Yeh Yeh’s - 04/11/12 05:38 AM
For today’s restaurant review, we ventured to Yeh Yeh’s, a relative newcomer to the neighborhood. Yeh Yeh’s specializes in banh mi, a.k.a. Vietnamese sandwiches: airy toasted French baguettes stuffed with marinated grilled meat (or tofu), pickled daikon radish and carrot shreds, crunchy slices of cucumber and jalapenos, and sprigs of fresh cilantro. Banh mi are known for being delicious, filling, and inexpensive—and Yeh Yeh’s offerings are no different. A tasty, generously-sized grilled pork sandwich costs a mere $3.85.
If you’re in the mood for a more traditional sandwich filling, options include BBQ brisket, Philly-style cheesesteak, and pastrami sandwiches. And if you … (2 comments)

We’ve already explained the benefits of exercise and a good night’s sleep when preparing to take your real estate exam. Now let’s talk about something you can actually do during your exam: take short stretching breaks.

A certain amount of stress is unavoidable during any exam, but countless studies have shown that too much stress can have a damaging effect on mental function. But it’s what you do to control that stress—both its physical and mental manifestations—that will make a difference in how stress impacts your performance. Today, we’ll focus on managing the physical effects of stress during your exam with the simple … (2 comments)

real estate training: Book Review: 100 Open Houses and So Much More - 04/02/12 05:47 AM
Consuelo Saah Baehr’s 100 Open Houses was not what I was expecting. I chose this book because the description intrigued me: “Rebecca Haas, like all of us, is being tortured to death by the sameness of her life, her thoughts, her weight, the incessant self review of life choices, her indecision, her stalled writing career. Can a change of space really change her life and finally give her the authenticity she needs? Take this trip with Rebecca through all of the open houses and the lives lived in them – is one of them yours?” Reviewers frequently mentioned Baehr’s sense of … (1 comments)
