Will Not Paying Your Mortgage Save the Economy?Could people not paying their mortgage, actually help the economy? I recently read an article in the LA Times that suggested that very idea. As we know since the housing bubble burst many homeowners owe more on their homes than they are worth. But are they choosing foreclosure? No, they are still making their payments and will probably continue to do so. CEO of ING Direct USA, Arkadi Kulmann, is calling for a modification of the loan re-modification process. The mortgage modification scheme that the Obama Admin has set up has only worked for 1%, 31,000 people, of those are in trouble of defaulting on their loans. What needs to be done then in order for banks to better serve customers to keep them in their homes? 1) Change the accounting rules: current laws have banks write modifications down as losses in their books.
