community: New Community Hub for Silverton, OR - 08/04/12 03:52 AM

The historic building is an absolute beauty at the corner of Main and Water in downtown Silverton, OR. Meticulously restored by Moe Salem, this early 1900’s building has been waiting for the perfect business to move in, and last night on a balmy August - First Friday, our community got the first peek at Howard Hinsdale Cellars’ new location for their wine bar and bistro.
To have an opening on one of Silverton’s busiest nights of the year was a test of endurance, I’m sure. Our town is nearly bursting at the seams with a Summer First Friday, a … (3 comments)

community: Things to do in Silverton, Or - Week of July 31-Aug 7, 2012 - 08/01/12 04:08 AM
Homer Davenport Days are here again! This weekend, Silverton celebrates Homer Davenport, an internationally renowned political cartoonist. I have a greater appreciation of the meaning behind this event and the man we celebrate after reading his coming of age memoir, The Country Boy. Highly recommended reading for any Silverton or Willamette Valley resident.
I've always enjoyed this week-end because it becomes a class / family / friend reunion where our townspeople, past and present gather together. And, somehow I've been roped into pushing a Davenport on wheels down Main Street. See you in Silverton!

The stated mission of the project organizers...   "The Goal of this project is to construct a skate park in Silverton Oregon and provide a facility for area youth and families to gather, socialize and perform skating and cycling skills in a safe, family-friendly environment."

community: Silverton Pet Parade - A Community Tradition - 05/21/11 01:45 PM

We enjoyed the Silverton Pet Parade today.  A tradition that has run without pause (or is that paws) since 1932.  I've heard claims that it is the longest running event of it's kind west of the Mississippi.
The event began to celebrate and remember Bobby the Wonder Dog who truly is a wonder.  He was separated from his family on a road trip to Indiana but he found his way home.  He traveled 2,800 miles to return to his family in Silverton.

community: Mother's Day ~ - 05/09/11 04:15 AM
Yesterday I drug my family to the Silverton Hospital Fun Run.  Forcing them to walk three miles with me is an annual Mother’s Day present to myself. This year it was especially hard to coax them out of bed because not only was it raining, it was dumping.

We are so often running in different directions.  Venturing out together as a unit from time to time is a necessity that feeds me.  I seek a special unified moment regardless of the shape or form it might come in.  I experienced that moment…

community: Playing in the Rain ~ Silverton Hospital Fun Run - 05/07/11 03:20 PM
I coaxed my family out of bed this morning to venture out into the rain for the 28th Annual Silverton Hospital Fun Run.  This is a fun event that brings community members together to celebrate healthy living and raise funds for the Silverton Hospital Network at the same time.

Lydia Von Weller from Silverton Fitness led the warm up to send us off on our way.  My boys just stood back and watched because they weren't quite sure how to put the "grapevine" steps together.

My daughter Madeline put up with walking the 5k with me but she really … (2 comments)

We're getting the spring tease weather in Silverton so far this month.  We're vacillating between rain, snow, hail, sun, clouds, more hail, and more peeks of sunshine.  It's shining at the moment so I'm dreaming of all the fun Summer events and festivals that people are working hard to plan right now.  All of the community happenings are part of what makes Silverton such a special place to live.  ~

community: What makes your community so great? - 02/14/11 09:06 AM

When we think about the communities where we live and work, it is important to think about what makes them a great place to live.  On my list in Silverton are the many small business owners who tirelessly work to provide uinique shops, amazing food, entertainment, recreation and more.  It's not easy being a small business owner and I salute their hard work and dedication.  They are living their passion and sharing it with our community.
Congratulations to Suzie Couraud for her win as the 2010 Silverton Business of the Year.
