Montgomery County, Maryland was founded in 1776 when Thomas S. Wootton thought of dividing Frederick County into three smaller counties (Frederick, Montgomery, and Washington counties).
In 1798 an act was passed to divide the county into five election districts and in 1799 commissioners were appointed who marked out the divisions forming the five original districts.

Maryland State Police's Rockville Barrack will be hosting a free active shooter training session in November.
The 1.5-hour class, dubbed the Civilian Response to Active Shooter Training, will be held on Monday, Nov. 4 at 6 p.m. It will take place at 7915 Montrose Rd. in Rockville.
Developed by The Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training (ALERRT) Center at Texas State University, the class teaches people what to do if they are confronted with an active shooter event. Montgomery County Health officials announced the dates for the annual flu vaccination campaign and urged residents to get a flu vaccination.  Vaccination is the best way to protect against illness during flu season.  Seasonal flu will also be circulating in the fall and winter and can cause serious illness.
 
Seasonal flu vaccinations will be readily available through private health providers, as well as at retail locations throughout the community. President Trump said his administration will move forward “fairly soon” with a plan to arrest thousands of migrant families in surprise roundups across major U.S. cities, with the two-week deadline he imposed on Democrats expiring Saturday.
Trump tipped off the mass arrests in a June 17 tweet, vowing “millions” of deportations, but called them off five days later. The president tweeted that he delayed the raids for two weeks at Democrats’ request, “to see if the Democrats and Republicans can get together and work out a solution to the Asylum and Loophole problems at the Southern Border.”

The Montgomery County Council passed a bill that now bans smoking in outdoor areas where food is served. The ban applies to patios, decks and porches.
Council Vice President Sidney Katz, who was the lead sponsor for the bill, says this is a public health issue, “Prohibiting smoking in outdoor seating areas provides for a healthier environment for both patrons and employees.”
In a press release, the council says this will provide outdoor diners the same protections from the health impacts of smoking. The ban also applies to e-cigarettes and vape pens.

Just a reminder that in some neighborhoods vehicles are parking too close to the intersection, thus minimizing sight lanes and making it difficult to observe vehicles or pedestrians in close proximity.

Parents of students entering seventh grade are reminded that immunization requirements require students to have one Tdap (Tetanus-diphtheria-attenuated pertussis) and one meningococcal (MCV4) vaccination.
Montgomery County Health and Human Services staff will provide free Tdap and MCV4
vaccinations to incoming seventh-grade students at several locations throughout the county in July and August.   No appointment is necessary.  A parent or designated adult must be present. Please bring a copy of the child’s immunization record to the clinic.

The Department of Environmental Protection is looking for creative Montgomery County, Maryland residents of all ages to enter the 2018 Storm Drain Art Contest. The goal is to educate passersby about the connection between local storm drains, streams and the Chesapeake Bay. Entries must be submitted by February 16. The six winning designs will be painted on storm drains in the Wheaton area in April in honor of Earth Day.
