Shocking News: Historic White's Ferry Ceased Operations
White’s Ferry, the historic Potomac River crossing in Poolesville, Maryland, announced it is ceasing operations Monday after a circuit court decision in Loudoun County, Virginia.
For over two centuries, the ferry has docked on the Virginia side of the river. However, the operator, on its Facebook page, announced Monday morning that the Virginia court ruled it could not legally dock on the opposite shore at White’s Ferry Road in Loudoun County.

In an effort to minimize contact and reduce the possible spread of COVID-19, all City of Gaithersburg facility lobbies are closed and services are available by appointment only. Advance appointments are required to access the services at City Hall, the Activity Center at Bohrer Park, the Police Station, and Public Works. Once you have arrived for your appointment, please call and you will be allowed access as soon as we are able to accommodate you. The Fitness Center at Bohrer Park is also closed. Read more here.

Chef Dolores was telling me about her dinner plans when I received an email advising that our dinner, prepared by The White House chef, was being delivered. The chef has the day off and is preparing meals at a local Gaithersburg church where he is a member. This is definitely a welcome surprise.

When I mentioned what we were having for our New Year’s Eve dinner, some asked for the recipe. Chef Dolores provided this recipe.
1 pound vermicelli (a very thin spaghetti)
1/4 pound of butter, soft
4 ounces caviar
Juice of 1/2 lemon
Cook vermicelli al dente. Have a large hot bowl at hand with the soft butter in it. Lift the pasta directly from its boiling pot into the bowl, draining it over its pot before forking it into the bowl. It must be hot, and it must be al dente. Have 4 or 6 hot soup bowls ready. If you enjoy holiday decorations made with natural materials, you will see many fine examples in Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia. At the time of the Revolution, Williamsburg residents did not use the kind of decorations that we enjoy during our visits.
Colonial Williamsburg was first decorated for Christmas in 1936 and Christmas decorations were popular by 1940.

I hope you and your family are enjoying the Christmas holidays. Thanks so much for your gifts of kindness and support over many years.
We are at home and did not join any family gatherings this year. Dolores had surgery on Monday to remove a basal cell carcinoma from her right cheek. The surgery was successful and she was told to take it easy during the holiday season.

One of my holiday blogs was about every Christmas ornament having a story. Sometimes, additional stories are provided by others. I posted a photograph of this ornament on my Facebook timeline and a Facebook friend in Italy responded with the image of the painting on which the ornament was based.
So, there may be an art history lesson to be learned as you view the picture of this ornament. The painting is "Madonna Sistina" by Raffaello Sanzio.
