I got gasps for mentioning the inevitable at a Realtor caravan meeting.  My colleagues were shocked that I would bring it up!  It's the "elephant" in the living room.  We all know it, but don't talk about it.  It's so big that we have to step around it, be careful not to disturb it.  Okay, enough already, let's talk about it!
One-third of us will NOT be here on this AR blog next year at this time.  We will be out of business.  Gone.  Poof.  Vanished from the real estate world.

going out of business: Warning: Don't Buy Gift Certificates at these Stores for Christmas - 12/09/08 04:59 AM
Stores that are planning to close after Christmas are still selling gift cards through the holidays even though the cards will be worthless January 1st or sooner. There is no law preventing them from doing this. On the contrary, it is referred to as "Bankrupcy  Planning". Below is a partial list of stores that you need to be cautious about, says Cyndi Carver who sent me this email.
So if you have gift certificates to ANY store, use them up now.  And don't get gift certificates from any of the stores below, as your gift recipient probably won't be able to redeem them … (17 comments)

going out of business: Agents out on the Street because Broker closed their doors? (No going-out-of-business sales in Real Estate) - 11/20/08 01:41 PM
Unfortunately I've seen this happen time and again... Brokers are either (1) in denial that they're about to close their doors; or (2) don't inform their agents until the last minute.  Real estate office don't usually put up a "Going Out of Business" sale on their front door, do they?
That leaves the agents in a difficult spot, as they have to take their listings, quickly, and relocate to another realty office without much research of that office's professional reputation (or their financial standing).  And what do you tell your clients when you're in limbo?  That is quite awkward.  One agent in … (12 comments)
