The headline figure from the latest employment report was strong. 288,000 payroll jobs were created in April according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, while the March numbers were revised upward by 11,000 to 203,000. The 85,000 jump from March is significant but likely reflects some catch-up following several months of adverse weather. The improvement was broad-based across industries and the government.
