twitter: When To Facebook and Tweet For Maximum Reach - 10/05/10 02:27 AM
I have often referred to one my favorite social media bloggers Dan Zarrella , and once again he published a fansinating study.  Dan approaches social media from a very analytical viewpoint, constantly measuring consumption.
In his latest study he measured what time an article shared on Facebook is most likely to get viewed.  The answer: 9 am EST.  I would guess because that is when most people are getting into to work and they are sitting down and checking their Facebook account.
More interesting studies on Facebook usage.
It's interesting to compare this to a similar study where he monitored when … (14 comments)

twitter: My New Favorite FREE Social Media Tool - Nutshell Mail - 07/30/10 04:19 AM
I am LOVING Nutshell Mail.  It makes keeping up with your Facebook, LinkedIn, MySpace and Twitter accounts a snap.  Simply go to www.nutshellmail.comand enter your information.  It takes about five minutes to customize.  Then, depending on the frequency you set, you'll receive an email with a round up of these services.
And of course social media wouldn't be social if you weren't interacting.  On each of the updates, there is the opportunity to like, comment, share, retweet, reply, direct message and more.
Here is an example of the email I get from Nutshell.  It was too long to include in its entiretity, so … (9 comments)

twitter: My 5 Favorite (Mostly) Free Web Tools - 07/07/10 04:24 AM
There are so many great, and free, tools out there.  But here is a list of my 5 favorite web services that I use almost daily to help with business communication.
HootSuite- This service allows you to schedule Tweets, so you don't actually have to be at your computer to send them.  Say for example you are having an Open House this weekend, you could write all of your Tweets about the event at one time a week prior, and just schedule one to go out a day.  Or each morning you could find 5 cool articles and schedule them to go out … (16 comments)

twitter: Raincamp in Dallas (And On Twitter Everywhere!) - 02/08/10 01:59 AM
I had the privilege of attending RainCamp New York in January.  It was a room full of people where you could actually feel the energy in the air.  At breaks people were literally buzzing with information they'd just learned.  This is on top of the awesome networking opportunity to meet fellow Rainers.
Because we were so impressed with the event, Zillow wanted to be involved in a bigger way.  I am happy to announce that we will be a sponsor at the Dallas event.  (I am unhappy to say that I won't personally be there, but we'll send someone else you'll … (29 comments)

twitter: Want Friends and Followers? Quit Talking About Yourself! - 01/29/10 12:11 AM
I love reading Dan Zarrella's blog where he uses data from 60,000+ Twitter accounts to report on trends.
Today's revelation: "Accounts that have more followers do not tend to talk about themselves much."
While interesting because it has data to support this claim, I couldn't help but think - doesn't that apply in the real world too?  How many people are attracted to those who opine on and on about themselves?
Once again, another example about how 'in person' actions that give you desired outcomes are examples of how you should act in the social media world as well.

twitter: With Twitter Think 120, not 140 - 01/20/10 12:21 AM
One of the big reasons social media is so powerful is the potential for what you create to go viral.  An example of this power is when these artists had a bad experience on United Airlines, wrote a funny song about it and now has been viewed 7,403,573 times on YouTube, in 6 months.
On a much smaller, but potentially more relevant scale - think about your Tweets.  Often Twitter is used to broadcast information.  Ideally all of your followers see this message, and ReTweet (RT) it to their followers, and then their followers RT it and so on - creating a viral … (10 comments)

twitter: Interesting Information On How Google and Twitter Could Interact - 01/18/10 03:26 AM
Google Ranks Real-Time Tweets Based On Followers?
Over the last couple of months there have been many announcements that social media (ie Tweets) will start working their way into search results.  There haven't been a lot of details on how exactly this is going to happen, but if you were still looking for that one more reason to get on Twitter, this could be it.
Last week Technology Review magazine interviewed Amit Singhal, who leads development of Google's real-time search, on the topic.  The article is titled, How Google Ranks Tweets.
Here are some interesting excerpts:
"..in the social context, the … (4 comments)

twitter: How Would You Describe Twitter - 01/07/10 07:33 AM
A post on the Social Media Marketing Institute's Blog recently asked people to make up an analogy to best describe Twitter (without using the word 'network').
Here is my best shot:
You go to the NAR Annual Convention. There are 500 booths. Each with different conversations happening at each booth at the same time. Some of it could be considered just noise, as you don't care about those companies/products/services/latest news. Some of if could be considered good information, as you do care. You chose which booths you want to pay special attention to. At the convention, you may run into people … (9 comments)

twitter: My Favorite Active Rain Members To Follow On Twitter - 11/02/09 03:20 AM
A few weeks ago Twitter announced that they now offered the ability to create Lists.  Personally, I still like TweepML better for this functionality for many of the reasons outlined in this TechCrunch article: Twitter Lists Competitors Respond: We Can All Get Along.
I went thru the list of people I follow on Twitter and compared that to people I enjoy reading on Active Rain.  I then came up with this list of people who are active in the Active Rain community, who I recommend following on Twitter.  Click on the link below and you can follow them all (or select … (9 comments)

twitter: Some Monday Humor - Courtesy Of Social Media and Conan - 09/21/09 03:54 AM
If you aren't into social media, you'll find this particularly funny.

Ironically, social media is one of the reasons that this skit has become so popular.  Yes, Conan has a significant reach.  But it has become compounded as people share this viral video through YouTube, blogging, twittering, etc. Viral video can be powerful, can you think of one for your business?
Oh, if you watch this and have the grand idea to go buy the URL youtwitface.com, it is already taken.  And t-shirt sales for the site are taken too.

twitter: A Detailed Lay Out Of My Social Media Marketing Plan - 07/08/09 05:22 AM
I often say that social media can be overwhelming if you don't have a plan.  However, sometimes without specifics, this might not make sense.  So instead of blogging about the theory of planning, I am just going to lay out my personal plan.  This is just what works for me, I am sure others have very different strategies and I would be interested in hearing them.
My goals:   1) Reach and educate real estate professionals about Zillow and internet advertising in general.   2) Keep in touch with my sphere of influence 3) Keep abreast of current real estate topics and 4) … (30 comments)

twitter: Social Media - Why You Don't Want "To Suck" - 05/05/09 09:22 AM
Thanks to Twitter and Jay Thompson being so popular, a potential of 3243 people now know that Jay thinks American Title in Casa Grande sucks.  And now you do too, just like that.  Social media is powerful stuff.

For a positive spin, imagine how many people would have picked up on it if he had said they 'were awesome'.  They might have gotten a few extra calls from the tweet.

twitter: I Finally Got Twitter, PLUS A Free Resource So You Can Too - 03/13/09 05:53 AM
Everyone who uses Twitter boasts about what a great tool it is.  So I tried to get into it, I failed.  A few months later I read blog post that inspired me to try again, I failed again.  A few more months later, I learned about # (hashtags to follow things of interest, like a conference or an event).  This was pretty neat, I thought I would try one more time.  This time - it clicked for me.
Now about four weeks later I have over 400 followers, follow almost that many people, and am usually following at least 3-4 keyword ‘twits' … (62 comments)

twitter: My Favorite Speaker At Inman Connect - Gary Vaynerchuk - Social Media - 01/22/09 12:04 AM
My favorite speaker this year at Inman Connect was Gary Vaynerchuk, who runs winelibrary.tv.  He was a strong believer in the power of social media.
Giving away information:
A few months ago at a difference conference, the keynote speaker noticed that people were recording him in the front row.  He asked them to stop.  Why?  He was getting paid for to deliver this valuable content! Gary noticed the same thing at Inman, he encouraged it.  Why?  The people who were recording were probably going to post it on YouTube, which will probably get viewed by people who Gary wouldn't have … (4 comments)
