wv: You Might Be Surprised ... - 10/24/07 09:33 PM

You might be surprised to learn that the most dangerous animal in West Virginia is our deer.
If you live in West Virginia, you are more likely than anyone else in the country to have a car accident that involves a deer.  In fact, according to State Farm, you have a 1 in 57 chance of hitting a deer THIS YEAR.
Bambi's out to get us.
The average car/deer accident causes about $3,000 worth of damage to the car.  Of course the deer aren't crazy about it either, and these accidents cause 150 deaths across the country each year.

wv: The Big Secret About Hurricane, West Virginia - 10/07/07 02:48 AM
I’ve been trying to think about the “big secret” in Hurricane, West Virginia.  If I had a new client moving in from somewhere else, what would be the most important thing to clue them in about?  I’ve been mulling it over ….
While I was thinking about it, I walked down to the bus stop to get my Little One.  I met the usual group of neighborhood parents there.  One neighbor had her hair cut short and I told her I liked it, she looked “sporty” and younger somehow.  She told me she might as well cut it off, the doctors … (6 comments)

wv: Flowers and a Lot of Heart - 09/19/07 05:42 AM
This morning Georgeann and I went across the street to Teays Valley Flowers & More to get flowers for a coworker.  We braved the traffic of Teays Valley Road and just hoofed it.
I hadn't been there in a while I was surprised at their pretty arrangements and very reasonable prices.  We found what we were looking for (and more!) and got ready to leave.
Before we walked out the door, Georgeann told the women there that she always uses them for flowers, ever since her grandson in the service asked her to get flowers for his wife while I was in … (24 comments)

wv: Wanna Bet? - 08/14/07 10:56 PM
Kanawha County, my next door neighbor (and good friend), recently had a vote to see if they would allow table gaming.
The votes were tallied and gaming won by 33 votes.
Then they found 64 uncounted votes at the bottom of a canvas bag.
Whoops!  Still anyone's ballgame, right?
But now we've learned they've found a few more.  Now there are 438 uncounted ballots.  WHAT?!
This Friday (August 17) the votes will be tallied again, and we'll know whether there will be table gaming in Kanawha County or not.
Anyone care to place your bets?

wv: My Chat With The Mayor - 07/15/07 11:49 PM
Yesterday I got a phone call from Scott Edwards, the new mayor of Hurricane.  Apparently I'm not the only person who uses Google Alerts, and Scott’s name popped up on The Putnam Scoop, my new local blog.
I’d written a little reminder about that whole dog limit law issue.  (I’m not a fan.)  Scott mentioned in the city council meeting in June, before he was elected, that he would like to remove the limit of two dogs from the language of the law.  He said he felt, as I do, that our other nuisance laws already cover any issues that … (28 comments)

wv: Ya' Gotta Regatta! - 07/11/07 03:19 AM
The Sternwheel Regatta is how West Virginia says good-bye to summer.
Tens of thousands of us (and our closest friends) get together in our lovely capitol city of Charleston to party alongside the beautiful Kanawha River. The Sternwheelers are a big draw, and you'll see plenty of action out on the water, but the party on the levee is what it's all about.
We have something for everyone, so come every night or pick your favorites!
Thursday August 30th is Oldies Night, featuring Starship with Mickey Thomas.
Friday August 31st is Rock Night, and Fuel will headline.
Saturday night, September 1st we go … (14 comments)

wv: Hurricane, WV Elections Tomorrow, June 12th! - 06/11/07 05:04 AM
Hurricane, West Virginia is in for a BIG change tomorrow!  After 40 years Mayor Raymond Peak is retiring.  (Thank you again, Mayor Peak, for your service all these years!)  It's time to elect a new mayor!!
With our Walmart set to open within months and the additional businesses that will ride in on it's coattails, managing our city is just going to become more and more complex.  Walmart alone is going to add nearly $1,000,000 to Hurricane's budget next year!  Our current budget is 2.7 million.  Think about THAT.
Take a little time to think about what changes you want for Hurricane.  Then … (6 comments)

wv: Hurricane Town Meeting: What About Our Dogs? - 06/04/07 11:51 PM
Last night was Hurricane's Town Meeting.  City Council members voted down a city ordinance that would have required dog kennels built to (in my humble opinion) insanely specific standards.  It would have required:
Skylights or windows so that there is light during the day.Fenced runs that are enclosed and visually screened from the general public and from the direction of neighboring houses.A roof conforming to residential standards including R-13 insulation and sides must match the residential dwelling.  Must be built within 10 feet of the back of the property owner's residence.  Must have a concrete floor.Must have a drainage ditch leading to … (35 comments)

wv: What Makes a House a Home, Hurricane, WV - 05/23/07 08:28 AM
What makes my house a home is the memories we've built over the years together.  The snapshots in my mind when I think of "Home" look something like this:
Looking impossibly young, shopping with my husband for our first home.  Taking my parents along because we have no idea what we're doing.Walking around inside our 900 square foot brick rancher and wondering what we'll ever do with all that room.  Big yard, time to get my first dog.  Off to the shelter!Finding out I was pregnant.  SICK.  Stretch marks.  Fat.  DELIGHTED.Bringing home our  baby, rocking her to sleep every night in the chair Mom reupholstered … (17 comments)

wv: Heroes and Old Buildings, The Putnam County Courthouse - 05/01/07 06:17 AM
This post is about a building that has a lot of personal meaning for me.  Instead of telling you a bunch of hard facts about the Putnam County Courthouse, I'm going to tell you what it is to me.
I've always loved this building.  As a little girl, it looked like a castle to me.  It still does.  I do feel an attachment to certain buildings and I think that's part of what led me to be a Realtor in the first place.  This building is one of my first loves.
My Grandma worked here as County Clerk before I was born.  She … (12 comments)

wv: He's Heeeee-eeeere! Flat James Loose in West Virginia! - 05/01/07 12:30 AM
He's arrived!!!
Flat James is here, in West Virginia, and LOVIN' IT!!
His first stop here was to meet some of the people at work.  Our secretary Karen just LOVED him.  She's usually shy about pictures, but James got her to smile and pose.  Karen had lots of ideas for pictures for us and wanted to see everything we were doing.  I'll have to make sure she sees this!

Our brokerage shares building space with a group of lawyers, and my broker is one of the partners in the law firm.
Our newest lawyer, Travis, was happy to play along with Flat James, … (15 comments)

wv: Showing Off Real Estate Shows, Solstice Farm - 04/09/07 11:58 PM

Real Estate Shows, the program I use to really show off my listings, has had some really good updates recently and I wanted to show them off a little.
Last night I walked a beautiful property with some of my favorite clients.  (I feel it's OK to say that, they are a warm loving family and have brought me some good business, besides.)
This property was so beautiful that my camera just would not stay out of my hands.  The farm is being subdivided into large building lots, ranging in size from 1+ to 4+ acres.  It's located about … (13 comments)

wv: POLL: Are You For or Against Dog Limit Laws? - 04/08/07 11:54 PM
I had a post a while back about the dog limit law in Hurricane.  I got a little fired up about the subject and I ranted a bit.
I not only posted to my blog,  I also sent that entry out in the form of a newsletter to my clients, friends and family who were close enough to be affected by the law.   For the first time ever, I had more views on a newsletter than times it was sent out!  In other words, it was forwarded many times.  I realized I wasn't the only one fired up.
Last week I got … (35 comments)

wv: Hurricane High School Class of 1987 UPDATED - 04/05/07 11:36 AM
My 20th high school reunion is this summer.
And no, I don't care about telling you my age, I'm 37 and glad for every year God chooses to bless me with.  I'M STILL HERE.  I have friends that aren't, so I promise to never, ever be ashamed of my age.
From what I've heard, Wendy Wandling and Molly Hauldren are planning our reuinion.  They did a great job with the last one, so I am really looking forward to this year!
We'll start at the Homecoming football game Friday August 24th between Hurricane and Winfield.  I haven't been to a high school game … (24 comments)

wv: Active Rain Contact Story, This Is Why We Do It - 04/04/07 05:37 AM
This morning I did my usual wake-up-and-stumble-to-the-computer routine.  I was happy to see I'd gotten a few comments while I was asleep, thinking there might be  does help me crawl out of bed.
This morning there was a bonus.
I got an e-mail from a woman who had traveled through West Virginia years ago.
About the time my Little One was born, she and her husband were on vacation with friends.  We were just a little dot on the map, a way to get from here to there.  They became tied up in road construction and ended up staying the night … (17 comments)

wv: What West Virginia Has Given You - 03/29/07 06:12 AM
I'm from West Virginia and proud of it.  We're a little state and often you don't hear much from us.  But I have a feeling you already know some West Virginians, and hopefully you like us.  Here's a short list of some West Virginians who have made a name for themselves out in the world.

wv: Hurricane's 10th Annual Civil War Weekend - 03/25/07 09:52 AM
This weekend was our 10th annual Civil War Weekend at Hurricane's Valley Park.
This event is an excuse for a day off.  Walking around the fields at Valley Park is suddenly like taking a trip back in time.  You're allowed to walk around camp, where the soldiers camp out like they would have during the Civil War.  It feels like spying on people from another time, and it's fascinating.
Cannons are set up on the battle fields, ready for war.  However, I was surprised by the genteel manners of the men in uniform.  I was quite pleased by the tipped … (8 comments)

wv: Where To Go in Putnam County: The Museum in the Community - 03/25/07 08:07 AM
The Museum in the Community started in 1983 with the combined efforts of the Huntington Museum of Art and area high school kids.
This museum got it's start in a strip mall as an art class learned how to run a museum.  Apparently, they took their role VERY seriously.  Today we have a very stylish building for the museum located at Valley Park in Hurricane.
I remember those early days, with the surprisingly professional art by the students gracing the walls.  You'll still find art from local students at this museum, as well an interesting round of exhibits.  There … (3 comments)

wv: Blenko Glass in Milton, West Virginia - 03/19/07 05:55 AM
West Virginia is famous for it's artists.  A visit to Tamarack will show you a wide variety of handmade treasures, but if you're looking for handmade glass, the place you've got to see is Blenko in Milton, West Virginia.
The Visitor's Center is a treat to visit.  The colors in the showroom are a feast for the eyes.  Everywhere you look you'll see sparkling works of art, in any color you can imagine.
Upstairs you'll find a little museum of handmade glass.  The walls feature stained glass made by leading American studios using glass made at Blenko.  The American Music Award trophies … (16 comments)
