In Brooksville, Florida It's Christmas Time Little Baby with Elvis Today was the annual Christmas Parade in Brooksville, Florida, an event that always draws a huge crowd of spectators. For 2 1/2 hours floats, dance troupes, and bands are making their way through downtown Brooksville.
With temperatures in the low 70s, the streets were lined thick with parade watchers. In front of the historic Hernando County Courthouse various vendors were doing good business selling kettle corn, drinks, cookies, and a variety of crafts and gifts. Here's a little taste of what it was like this morning, I have more photos and video to edit!

Right here, many local area farms around Central Florida, including Hernando, Pasco, and Sumter Counties are producing an abundance of blueberries every Spring long before these delicious blue berries are available in other parts of the country!
The first annual Florida Blueberry Festival is taking place this weekend, from May 4th to May 6th, 2012 in the City of Brooksville in Hernando County.

brooksville: Spanish Moss... or what is that stuff hanging down from those trees?

Just as many visitors, when I first came to Florida and noticed this strange gray stuff hanging off trees and power lines, I wondered what it was and why it was there.
Unfamiliar with it, I found it rather unappealing. It eerily reminded me of cob webs --- something I could tolerate maybe for Halloween but otherwise could not understand why it wasn't cleaned up.
Having lived in the South for many years now, I find that I have gotten used to the gray stuff that is called Spanish Moss.

Every year, thousands of spectators watch as Civil War reenactors bring back to life the battle of Brooksville. This year, the 145th anniversary of the actual Federal raid on the town of Brooksville, Florida will be re-enacted for the 28th time!

The Brooksville Raid is well known as the biggest and best Civil War reenactment in Florida. In 2008, nearly 4000 reenactors and their families particiated in the events that take place over two days. They brought with them 24 canons and participants included 61 cavalrymen.
