Muhly Grass - A Florida Native in Your Landscape       by Silvia Dukes PA, Tropic Shores Realty
These are a few of my Muhly Grass plants that are growing in my front yard. Every Fall, they flower and produce beautiful pink plumes that gently sway in the wind.  There have been many occasions when I overheard passer-bys walking in the neighborhood ooh-ing and aah-ing over these showy plants.
Landscaping with native plants has quite a few benefits.   They are adapted for the climate you live in so they are resistant to disease and pests.  They also don't require much "fussing" in the … (19 comments)

Star Fruit - Tropical Treat That Grows in Florida
You may have seen Star Fruit - also known as Carambola - in the produce section of your local market but did you know that the Star Fruit tree can also be grown in Florida?
Granted, I haven't seen too many of these trees, they surely are not as common as our wonderful Florida Citrus but every time I visit my accountant at her home office, I admire a most beautiful specimen tree of Star Fruit that grows in her front yard.
Actually, it's quite a famous tree in her area as … (20 comments)

Florida Nature - What's Blooming in January? Aloe...
One of the great benefits of living in Florida is that there is something blooming at any time of the year.  Yes, even in January, when in some of our Northern states you would only see ice flowers forming on window glass, there are real blossoms to be found among Florida plants.
These are images from an Aloe plant that grows happily in my side yard.  Most of the time, it goes unnoticed as the plant itself is not that showy.
But wait until the flowers come out and this Aloe is a show … (11 comments)

florida plants: Sunday Harvest Time in the Watermelon Patch! - 09/27/09 12:08 PM
Sunday Harvest Time in the Watermelon Patch!
Today was the day!  I decided to taste the fruit of my gardening and finally cut one of my "babies" from its vine just hoping it would be ready.
For weeks I have been watching watermelon vines grow from a few discarded seeds until they covered nearly half the backyard.  Luckily, I always considered grass a bit overrated and my husband didn't mind that his mowing chores were decreasing by the day!
I watched the bees as they busied themselves from flower to flower, I watched tiny little melons develop into larger ones and really … (15 comments)

florida plants: Backyard "Gardening" - 08/30/09 10:24 AM
Several weeks ago, I had bought some really good watermelon.  After I was done eating it, I threw out some of the seeds in the backyard for the "birds" to eat.  Well, apparently, the birds didn't eat the seeds and out came little watermelon vines here and there.

In my Hernando Beach neighborhood, the dirt is not all that good. It's a challenge to grow a lawn and growing vegetables in this waterfront community isn't the norm.  So I just relaxed and watched more out of curiosity the vines as they grew.
Then, seemingly overnight, my backyard was transformed into an outright watermelon patch … (14 comments)

florida plants: Spanish Moss... or what is that stuff hanging down from those trees? - 02/19/09 11:53 PM
Just as many visitors, when I first came to Florida and noticed this strange gray stuff hanging off trees and power lines, I wondered what it was and why it was there.
Unfamiliar with it, I found it rather unappealing.  It eerily reminded me of cob webs --- something I could tolerate maybe for Halloween but otherwise could not understand why it wasn't cleaned up.

Having lived in the South for many years now, I find that I have gotten used to the gray stuff that is called Spanish Moss.
In fact, I even discovered that I can find some strange beauty in … (12 comments)
