las vegas: Las Vegas Winter Driving - 11/17/07 09:57 AM
I lived in the eastern part of the country most of my life so I was used to cold, snow and ice.  I had an ice scraper and a snow brush in the car and snow tires on the car.  I had de-icer for the frozen door locks and salt in the trunk just in case I was stuck somewhere.  I had an extra set of keys so that I could start my car at work and try to defrost it before I left to go home.  Of course, sometimes I had to shovel my way out the back door of … (6 comments)

las vegas: Las Vegas....Wild Burros?? - 11/08/07 03:21 PM
About a year ago, a friend of mine, who just moved to Las Vegas, was riding through Red Rock Canyon National Park
It is a beautiful place to visit, so if you haven't been there, it is worth the trip. Anyway, my friend was busy taking pictures and enjoying the sights, when all of a sudden, a wild burro stuck its head in the car window!  He was quite surprised but was able to get a picture of the donkey before it turned around and went on its way.  I don't know if the burro was looking for food or … (22 comments)

las vegas: Las Vegas Sunset........Beautiful! - 11/04/07 01:42 PM
We don't get a lot of cloudy days here in Las Vegas, but when we do get some clouds, it makes for a beautiful sunset.  My husband and I were walking the dog this evening and since it got dark a bit earlier, we got to see the sunset.  Fortunately, my husband had his cell phone and was able to capture the gorgeous colors.  Hope you all enjoy it as much as we did.

Ever get files emailed to you from your friends, coworkers, or RE office in Microsoft Office format, but can't open them? Maybe you had office on an old computer, but when you replaced it, didn't know you'd have to shell out for the latest version.

Well this might be a solution for you. The forever free open source Open Office from Sun Micro, makers of Java.

I have the MS Office software, but my better half has given this a shot, and seems to work well. Everything from powerpoint to xls spread sheets have worked fine. There's also a … (12 comments)

las vegas: Beyond the Neon - Part 4 - Nevada Day @ Loonie Lonnie's ??? - 10/22/07 05:15 PM
Nevada Day is almost here. It's the state's holiday commemorating it's entry into the Union on Oct. 31, 1864. It was originally called 'Admission Day' and was later switched, as was the day of the holiday. No longer on Halloween specifically, but the last Friday of the month to make a long weekend. There are parades and many events in Carson City, and even a tradition here in Las Vegas.
OK, so who is sometimes affectionately known as 'Loonie Lonnie'.....and is he really? Well, I'll let you decide.
Lonnie is a Vietnam Veteran, Army Airborne combat flight surgeon with over 100 … (4 comments)

las vegas: Beyond the Neon........Part 3 Are You Ready for Some Football?? - 10/20/07 07:28 PM
Las Vegas is a huge melting pot of people from all over the country and world.  Everything from having a Chinatown to this weekend's Hawaiian festival and Outrigger Regatta, held by the Las Vegas Hawaiian Civic Club

It even brings together people that support the same sports teams.  For all you football fans who can't wait until Sunday to see the big game, there are many places to see your favorite team.  Of course you can go to the casinos, but there are many bars that cater to a specific team.  Whether you are visiting Las Vegas and can't … (9 comments)

las vegas: Beyond the Neon......Part 2, Springs Preserve - 10/19/07 04:29 PM
The Springs Preserve is a new $250 million Nature and Learning facility just a few miles from downtown Las Vegas. It sits on the site that gave Las Vegas it's name......in Spanish.....'The Meadows'. Yes, in the middle of the desert were artesian springs, and why early Indian settlers inhabited the valley. Because of the water it also became an important stop for the Spanish Trail, that had several routes between Santa Fe and Los Angeles, but all converged to pass through the Vegas Valley.

Later these springs would become a necessity for another important form of transportation.....the railroads. The … (5 comments)

las vegas: Beyond the Neon.......Part 1, Trails - 10/18/07 05:56 PM
I have mentioned in my previous blogs about all the activities here in Las Vegas, other than gambling.  Now that the swim season is wrapping up with the cooler 70s & 80s here in the valley, it is time to enjoy even more of the outdoors......during the 'Second Spring' of the year.

The River Mountain Trail  I've mentioned before, will be approximately 35 miles in length when completed and connect Lake Mead, Hoover Dam, Henderson, Lake Las Vegas and Boulder City.  But wait, there's still more......a LOT more.

Right now, the Las Vegas Valley has over 750 miles … (13 comments)

las vegas: Traveling to Las Vegas.........Convention or Vacation? - 10/08/07 05:41 PM
Is Las Vegas in your travel plans?  Maybe you are coming for a convention, since it is prime time for those.  As many of you in the real estate world know, there is a REALTOR® convention Nov. 13-16

If you are here for a convention, you will have a little free time to play, and I don't just mean gambling!

If you've followed my blogs you may know we have an unusual Jack Russell Terrier, that among other things, swims underwater.  Living here in Vegas we get a LOT of company, and everyone was amazed and wanted … (5 comments)

las vegas: A Good Reason to Use a REALTOR® - 10/04/07 02:20 PM
Here's a great example of why you should use a Realtor®.  An elderly couple in Las Vegas recently tried to sell their house and ended up being scammed by someone in their church.  Instead of it being a sale, they ended up with an $86,000 lien and are now in foreclosure.  Fortunately for the couple, a local attorney firm is taking the case pro bono.
The story and video is here at KTNV Las Vegas.

las vegas: Orchards in Las Vegas ??? - 10/02/07 04:51 PM
Who would believe that Las Vegas, in the middle of the desert, with construction everywhere, that you can go to the orchards and pick fresh fruits and  vegetables off of the vine!  It's true!  In the far northwest corner of Las Vegas sits over 50 acres with more than 600 apple, peaches and pear trees.  In the summer, there is a variety of vegetables including squash, tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers and pumpkins.  It is the most amazing sight to see rows and rows of crops in the middle of the desert.  You feel like you are on a farm in Ohio or … (9 comments)

las vegas: Nothing but Gambling in Vegas....I Think Not! - 09/29/07 06:48 PM
You think that when you move to Las Vegas, there will be nothing to do except gamble? Let's take a look. Here are just a few of the activies for locals to enjoy.   For swimmers,  there are several pools to choose from, both indoor and outdoor.  Clark County has several locations that are open year round for your swimming pleasure.  The county's information on all the aquatics is on their website  click here.  The City of Henderson also has many pools to choose from.  They offer classes for all levels of swimmers, from babies to seniors including swim aerobics.  The city … (11 comments)

las vegas: Las Vegas Real Estate - The Future - 09/26/07 02:48 PM
Of course no one has a crystal ball and can predict what will happen. If we did, we would have bought that winning powerball or my name would be on Trump Towers or Wynn Las Vegas. The only thing we can do is look at what is on the table at the moment and see what indicators, good or bad, are out there.   You'll see those disclaimers about 'forward looking statements' and 'past performance doesn't indicate future'. That is true, but what do you use? I ask because I've also been hearing some say "Wait for the Vegas housing market to bottom out". When … (9 comments)

las vegas: Las Vegas Real Estate - Gloom & Doom.......or Opportunity Knocking? Part 2 - 09/25/07 03:54 PM
  For Part 1 click here
For home buyers, there is not only the price break, but an incredible selection. A chance to find something within a reasonable time frame, and without on the spot, 'close enough' decisions, or having dreams dashed with 'just missed it' or bidding wars.
I moved here during the housing boom, and had several agents that were too busy to return a call or an email. Even when I found one it took 6 months of searching to find my home. Yes, I received updates of the latest few homes that were 'close' to what I was looking … (6 comments)

las vegas: Las Vegas Real Estate - Gloom & Doom.......or Opportunity Knocking? Part 1 - 09/25/07 03:42 PM
Sure, the majority of real estate media reports have been bad, with Las Vegas and Nevada always getting some of the top honors. The terms bubble bursts, overbuilt, sub-prime nightmares, sales declines, steep cuts in permits, foreclosures with people tossed into the streets and losing their homes. It sounds horrible, with no end in sight, no light at the end of the tunnel.   The problem seems to be that the media has used a cookie cutter approach that all markets are created equal, and many, including people in the industry, have fallen for it hook line and sinker. Worse yet, so have our potential customers.   Why are many Vegas … (0 comments)
