recipes: Things to Remember When You Donate Food - 11/19/12 06:33 AM
This is the time of year that many people donate food to food drives. To ensure that your donation can be used, remember these donation tips.
Non-perishable items are always needed. Donate items that are factory sealed and try to avoid dented or rusted cans. Most agencies will not accept home-canned or home-packaged foods, but be sure to ask—you may be surprised. Open or partially used items usually won’t be accepted. If you are planning on shopping for items to donate, call the agency first to see what they are low on. Try to contribute basic foodstuffs including rice, pasta, canned … (12 comments)

recipes: Happy Birthday Leapers and Leaplings! - 02/27/12 12:50 AM
Persons born on leap day, February 29, are called "leaplings" or "leapers."  Leapers have 75 percent fewer birthdays and the chance of being born on February 29th is 1 out of every 1,500.  It was once thought that leapling babies would inevitably prove sickly and "hard to raise," though no one remembers why.
Leap year occurs every four years to help syncronize the calendar and solar year.  Or the length of time the earth takes to rotate the sun.  And it also gives us an extra to put off doing our Taxes!!
Since I don't know of any Leap Year recipes off the top … (3 comments)

We have a tradition at our house.  Every year I make my husband his favorite Christmas treat – Pumpkin Empanadas.  Since I grew up with tacos whose filling resembled Sloppy Joes and thinking that Taco Bell was good Mexican food, you know I had a lot to learn about Mexican cuisine.  So, I am Mexican by Marriage.
My husband is an awesome cook but doesn’t bake.  I’ve been to the panaderia a few times and know that my empanadas aren’t the same as authentic pumpkin empanadas.  But I’m okay with that ’cause this girl can bake.  And my pie crust is … (4 comments)

Apparently there is no documentation to back up the fact that this is a “National” holiday.  One would only have to assume that it was merely an over-sight, hiccup or the system could be flawed.   Maybe this should be another debate for the “Occupy” group??
