monsoon: Is the Monsoon Over In Sedona? Arizona Climate Differences - 09/15/18 09:42 AM
Sedona Weather Summary Through August
Extreme Weather Event - Florence
On the southern and east coast, the hurricane season has reached peak conditions (September 10th). Our thoughts and prays are with the communities that have been devastated by Hurricane Florence.  We continue to pray that flooding in the interior will be minimal with no loss of life throughout the path of this extreme weather event. Our hope is that first responders will be able to react quickly to emergency conditions. We can take some solace in knowing that people, communities and states, across this great land come to the aid of others in a … (20 comments)

Dramatic Sedona Monsoon Sky
Coffeepot Rock In Soldiers Pass
Our Sedona monsoon has peaked and will be coming to an end soon.  Technically, monsoon goes to the end of September, but mid July through August is the peak of the season. Our most dramatic images are always taken during monsoon. The only images involving actual weather that can come close to this season are images taken during, or right after, a snowfall. Before you know it, winter will be here! It is not a season we dread, because winter does not last long and is pretty mild overall.  Of course, spring and fall foliage is … (13 comments)

monsoon: Hot August Nights! A "cool" look at what is coming soon! - 08/03/18 07:49 AM
Cooler Weather Is Around The Corner!
This was Sedona's First White Christmas (2016)!
The Dog Days of Summer and Hot August Nights are here. Many are longing for those cool brisk evenings.... but are you sure you want summer to end?
Yesterday (YouTube Thursdays),  I was going through many of my videos making sure my YouTube Channel was up-to-date.  Thanks to Debb Janes EcoBroker and Bernie Stea JD - I decided to go through my play-lists so that all the videos were easily accessible.  I have learned a lot about YouTube (from Debb) and now feel I have a good handle on my channel and play-lists as well … (17 comments)

monsoon: Friday Foto - Monsoon T-Storm Over Soldiers Pass - West Sedona - 07/27/18 08:37 PM
Monsoon T-Storms Over Soldiers Pass West Sedona
Lenticular Clouds
I pulled off Soldiers Pass Rd because I saw a triple stack of lenticular clouds. Lenticular clouds are very rare to see and generally form over mountains because of updrafts and wind sheer.  By the time I got my phone out the lenticular clouds (upper left) turned into a fuzzy after-thought. However the image was still very interesting because of all the different types of clouds in a tight area.
Cooler Weather Prevailed!
By 4:30p the clouds opened up over our home.  The temp was already dropping because of the cloud cover but dropped dramatically from … (15 comments)

monsoon: Red Sky At Morning ... - 07/18/18 08:14 AM
Another Gorgeous Sedona Sunrise
The saying goes.....
"Red sky at night, sailors' delight. Red sky at morning, sailors take warning."
As I was going to bed last night, there were flashes of lighting and the distant and muffled sound of thunder. The pitter-patter of the rain started off slowly and then the heavens opened up creating a quarter of an inch of rain in 10 minutes. Then it stopped suddenly!
Sedona July Weather Summary - Cottages At Coffeepot
So far this month, our Sedona weather station, which is at the end of Soldiers Pass, has had 2.81 inches of rain. Considering we have had only 1.25 … (20 comments)

Recap of Sedona Weather - January Thru Jun 2018In the chart above, you can see there are no days, so far this year below 40º for a high. Even with 3.75 inches of snow, which melted quickly, most locals were able to get by with sweaters and maybe gloves and/or hat in the early morning. We did not see any temps at 100º until June. June is generally our warmest month because monsoon conditions do not develop … (9 comments)

monsoon: Fall Weather - Sedona AZ - Forecast and Actuals - 09/25/17 04:19 PM
Sedona Weather Update
For September
Technically - The monsoon is over on September 30th. The new way to measure is from June 15th to September 30th. However, monsoon conditions exist when the dew point is over 55º, and currently, the average dewpoint is at 23º.  This means, realistically speaking, the monsoon is over.  Chances are we will not see any more weather coming from the south.
So scenes like this one will give way to blue skies and puffy white clouds such as shown in the forecast above!
One of the reasons our fall weather brings us visitors from all over is the … (9 comments)

Monsoon 2017
Mother Nature Put On A Show
This storm came through right at dusk. There is slight rainbow (hard to see)  in the last segment of the  lightning bolt. It was easy to make out the red, orange and yellow colors with the naked eye.
Some of the lightning was so strong and close that the camera was a complete white washed out screen.
Two days ago on the local evening news the station asked a question, "Are you still waiting for monsoon?"  Monsoon may not hit every community as a storm comes through. The energy of the cell can be concentrated in small areas as … (23 comments)

Our First Measurable Rain
The Actual Temperature!

The Graph!
Our Sedona spring was gorgeous with perfect temps and not much rain. But right before summer started we had a 13 day heat spell that averaged 105º for a high. That was a record for us! June is generally the hottest month of the year because monsoon does not normally develop until July. You need a dew point of 55º and just the last couple of days started to reach that threshold.
Today, we had the AC on for less than 3 hours. All the windows are open and we are enjoying the fresh … (16 comments)

Monsoon 2016
The video was taken before the picture.  The sun was still above the horizon allowing the purple ,blue and geen spectrum to shine through.
This panorama picture was taken after the video (above) was shot. (You can see some of the hand shake moving across the sky). I have a special camera that can take Panoramic pictures without the shake but there was no time to set it up. You have maybe two minutes to capture this beauty before you lose the magic.
As the sun sets below the horizon, some of the spectrum does not transfer through. … (8 comments)

High Pressure Kept Monsoon Away
This is why I watch 12News out of Phoenix.  They are the only station with the Monsoon Meter!  This gives us a pretty good idea of what the weather is going to be like in the different climatic zones.  We live in Northern AZ and the weather is much different than other zones. The White Mountains and Southeast AZ (Tucson) usually get more rain during monsoon. But a Thunderhead does not discriminate where it drops the rain!
We Need Rain

Arizona Monsoon Officially Ended on September 30th
Why is it a big deal?
Center Formation - Bell Rock
In other parts of the world, monsoon season is a time of devastating rain conditions and it may not be the most popular season but here in Arizona, we get much needed rainfall.  It is true that in central (Phoenix area) and southern Arizona (Tucson) high winds and dust storms (haboobs) can preceed a rain event and cause damage which can be devastating and deadly.  During microbursts, the heavy rain can also cause flash flooding and loosen the soil which causes trees to topple as well … (3 comments)

monsoon: How Important Are Rain Gutters To Home Maintenance? - 03/23/15 03:56 AM
If you've owned a home for a while, you know that water entering the home can be at least a hassle and at worst a cause of major destruction. Not only should keeping water from sneaking into those tiny cracks and crevices be a priority, it could make the difference between owning an asset and owning a money pit. One of the primary ways to protect your home from undesirable moisture is installing gutters.
Most people think that the sole purpose of rain gutters is to direct water coming off the roof toward downspouts to keep it from dripping on … (6 comments)
