As some of you know, many of the red rocks in Sedona are named.  This is an image of "The Mermaid" laying on her side. It is very prominent as you come over the hill on SR 179 heading north from the Big Park area of Sedona.
This map shows all the trailheads of the Red Rock Scenic Byway in the
Red Rock Ranger District - Coconino National Forest.  All of the hard to read tags are trailheads.  Below you can find each trail listed.

red rocks: Not Quite Silent Saturday ~ Before and After Pine Tree Removal - 11/17/18 02:44 PM
Before & After
Views of Coffeepot Rock
Over the years, many of the trees in our neighbor's yard have matured to the point of endangering the integrity of the wall separating our property.  A few years ago, it was a large apricot tree. Much of the fruit dropped into our courtyard. We never complained, but we were very thankful when they had it removed.
Last week two huge pine trees had to be removed for the same reason.  The picture above is the conclusion of the removal of one of those pine trees.
The huge magnolia tree which is now visible is the result of … (16 comments)

Enjoying Peace and Quiet of a Nature Hike
In Soldiers Pass, Sedona AZ

The Soldiers Pass area can be accessed right from my front door.  It is a three to four minute walk to two different parts of the trail. You would never know that you are located close to the center of town from this area. Trails meander up and down arroyos as well as two of the most well known features. The Seven Sacred Pools and Devil's Kitchen are a popular tourist attraction, but even with a number of people visiting these features, you feel like … (24 comments)

red rocks: Sedona Harvest Moon Setting.... A Rare Event Captured! - 09/26/18 08:58 AM
Sedona Harvest Moon Setting....

This is a very rare event like an eclipse, it only lines up possibly once in a lifetime.  My husband saw the trajectory of the moon and set up the camera and waited.  This is an image he is extremely proud of because you would have to be standing in front of our house to duplicate it! There is only one shot of these pics using a 200mm to 500mm lens.
The two rock formations are Thunder Mountain on the left side and Coffeepot Rock on the right side. See the image below for context... (taken at a different … (18 comments)

red rocks: The Tale of Two Sedona Solstices.... - 07/01/18 06:22 PM

The Shadows Tell The Tale
The camera is facing west while taking these images. Since taking the winter solstice image, we lost two pine trees.
On the winter solstice the sun rises in the southeast creating a shadow on the northeast side of Coffeepot Rock. During the summer solstice, the sun will rise at it furthest point in the northeast which creates a shadow on the southeast face of the rock.
On the equinox (fall or spring), the sun should allign with that knife edge of the rock face and create very little shadow on either side.  That will be the next picture in … (11 comments)

red rocks: Blink and it is gone.....A Spring Snapshot of Crescent Moon Ranch - 03/26/18 05:49 PM
Crescent Moon Ranch Park in Sedona AZ
Blink and it's gone....
Crescent Moon Ranch in Sedona Arizona is one of my favorite areas to visit. However, this image is generally only available during a short time in spring.  I am talking specifically about the green grass. The grass is wild. It will wither and turn brown without any rain, and it will do that rather quickly! So the scene above is not quite as appealing without the grass.
 Lower Oak Creek...
The image to the right, is a two minute walk on a trail to the right of the shed in the picture above. Lower Oak Creek borders … (20 comments)

 What is Red Rock Fever?
West Sedona Real Estate

Those with a severe case of red rock fever, may lose some sleep, become anxious and possibly frustrated because they did not plan enough time in this wonderful area.
This means a person with the "fever" may try to pack too much into their time here. An extra red rock hike or canoe trip down the Verde River or a Red Rock or Pink Jeep tour.
I know, you don't want to leave but you have to go home and get back to work. Maybe you do like my husband did...."Sheri, find us a REALTOR®!"

red rocks: Throwback Thursday - Shadows of the Solstice In Red Rock Country - 12/21/17 06:59 PM

Sedona Solstice
The image above was taken on the Solstice this morning. Over the years I have watched and compared the shadows created by the sun as it rises in the morning.
Today I took this image of Coffeepot Rock and noticed something different that I didn't realize before. There are no real shadows on the red rock. The sun is at it's south-eastern most point today and the shadows are very slight.
My back wall is perpendicular to the sun on this date. Starting tomorrowthe sun will appear to be moving back to the north. I was pretty sure I had an image of Coffeepot on … (19 comments)

red rocks: Inspiration Monday - Aerial of Cathedral Rock - 11/27/17 06:38 PM
Aerial - Cathedral Rock - A Sedona Icon
Most of the red rock formations in Sedona take on a different look from various locations.  Cathedral Rock is a special formation because it can be seen 360º from different well traveled roads. It is also one of the most recognizable rock formations in all of Sedona.  Of course this angle looking down is not very recognizable because it is rarely photographed from above.
I like this picture because you can see the airport sitting on a mesa on the left side and on the right side, you can look up through Oak Creek Canyon.
