Quick Note: Every year I update this post with current information, for the most part, the science does not change, but climatic conditions vary from year to year. Sedona weather readings are gathered from the Cottages at Coffeepot weather station located in Soldiers Pass, Sedona Arizona.

summer: I Am Grateful For The Seasons of Sedona Arizona - 11/02/18 12:18 PM

The Seasons of Sedona
Anyone who follows me, knows that I love our weather. In Sedona, we get real change in the seasons.  As much as I love seasonal changes, I am still a lightweight when it comes to cold weather.  This is probably why I enjoy this time of year so much. Our seasons are mild and our humidity is low. It is humid air that makes warm air feel stiffling and it is moisture in the cold air that brings a chill to the bones.  We get neither of those conditions which makes me extremely grateful. … (18 comments)

Dramatic Sedona Monsoon Sky
Coffeepot Rock In Soldiers Pass
Our Sedona monsoon has peaked and will be coming to an end soon.  Technically, monsoon goes to the end of September, but mid July through August is the peak of the season. Our most dramatic images are always taken during monsoon. The only images involving actual weather that can come close to this season are images taken during, or right after, a snowfall. Before you know it, winter will be here! It is not a season we dread, because winter does not last long and is pretty mild overall.  Of course, spring and fall foliage is … (13 comments)

Recap of Sedona Weather - January Thru Jun 2018In the chart above, you can see there are no days, so far this year below 40º for a high. Even with 3.75 inches of snow, which melted quickly, most locals were able to get by with sweaters and maybe gloves and/or hat in the early morning. We did not see any temps at 100º until June. June is generally our warmest month because monsoon conditions do not develop … (9 comments)

summer: The Tale of Two Sedona Solstices.... - 07/01/18 06:22 PM
The Shadows Tell The Tale
The camera is facing west while taking these images. Since taking the winter solstice image, we lost two pine trees.
On the winter solstice the sun rises in the southeast creating a shadow on the northeast side of Coffeepot Rock. During the summer solstice, the sun will rise at it furthest point in the northeast which creates a shadow on the southeast face of the rock.
On the equinox (fall or spring), the sun should allign with that knife edge of the rock face and create very little shadow on either side.  That will be the next picture in … (11 comments)

The Sedona Weather - Year In Review...300 Days of Sunshine!
Sedona Weather - Tracking "sunshine" as a statistic, was not easy. One has to be cognizant of the weather each and every day. To be accurate, this statistic needs to be recorded on a daily basis. My husband decided to take on this project for one year to see how accurate the claim was. Many areas that boast high tourism and lots of sunshine claim this statistic. But there was an inner curiosity to either prove or disprove the claim in Sedona. So … (14 comments)

The Tale of My 41 Year Old Spider Plant and More Blooms!

41 Year Old Spider Plant
I bought this plant back in 1976 to hang on a macrame plant hanger. My new home had a covered porch, so I thought this would be perfect. In 1984, when we moved to our third home, I definitely made sure I would take this plant. Both my boys were born and grew up with this plant. So there was an attachment and memories.

summer: Heat Exhaustion & Heat Stroke: What to Do - 07/06/16 04:54 AM
Heat Exhaustion & Heat Stroke are extremely serious health hazards during summer months especially.  In very dry climates, the effects can come on quicker because your perspiration evaporates much more quickly which can cool you off faster making you think you are OK.  You could actually become
dehydrated faster and bring on the onset of either of these heat related conditions.  Bystanders should be aware of the symptoms because the victim may not realize anything is wrong.

summer: All Time Record Temperature In Sedona On the Summer Solstice! - 06/21/16 05:05 AM
Hottest Day On Record In Sedona
3º Higher Than Previous Record
I am always the first person to say that Sedona is much cooler than Phoenix or the Valley.  Well, yesterday, our temps were not far off of record setting temps in Phoenix!  I never thought I would ever see a temperature as high as 112 in Sedona.  We have spent many vacations on the Colorado River where temps can hover around 120º. So heat is not foreign to us but NEVER in Sedona.
Normally - the coolest part of the day is right after sun up, unless a front moves in.  During summer, we … (15 comments)

summer: A Cool Respite From the Summer Heat - L'Auberge de Sedona at Oak Creek - 06/26/14 05:33 AM
You hardly know you are nestled among the magnificent red rocks of Sedona when you are on Oak Creek at the L'Auberge de Sedona Resort.   The setting is perfect for a summer respite from the warm temperatures that summer brings.  You sit under mature Oak, Sycamore, and Cottonwood trees which offer shade from the sun. The creek flows over rocks and through boulders. As the water careens off those rocks, a slight mist develops and provides a cool breeze as the surrounding air is stirred. Could the backdrop be any more perfect?
It had been a long … (2 comments)

summer: Time Elapse Photograph of 20 Foot Century Plant Growing & Blooming - 07/08/13 04:23 AM
We saw this Agave (Century plant)  starting to pop up on April 30th.  My husband decided to take a picture every day while it was going through the growth spurt through the blooming.  The growth was very obvious on a daily basis.  It was amazing to see growth of 5 to 11 inches on a daily basis. Once the Century Plant got about 10 feet tall it became more challenging to measure.  We put a ploe you use for painting and got an approximate measurement then we laid the pole on the ground and used a tape measure to get the … (1 comments)
