winter: What Does Groundhog Day Mean In Arizona?

Groundhog Day In Arizona What Does Groundhog Day Mean To Me and Other ZoniesWhen you live in Arizona, for that matter any sunbelt state, you really don't think of winter the same way as others who live in colder climates. I am very thankful for our moderate winter temps. But there is a special significance to Groundhog Day. We are halfway to spring. Yea! Also, Valentine's Day is coming up and the days are starting to get more daylight. I was in the garden this morning and I could see signs of spring in the air. It will be 75º at the (27 comments)
winter: Is The Sedona Winter Saying A Last Good Bye?
- 02/24/22 03:12 PM
Rain - Snow - Wind Mother Nature Is Speaking To Sedona! Yesterday was one of the few days since we moved to Sedona that was below freezing most of the daytime hours. Why? We kept getting waves of snow! Right after midnight, the morning hours were at 41º but that steadily went down to below freezing temps. This kept the snow light and fluffy until this morning. As you can see the temp was 20.9º right at dawn. That increased to over 40º and the snow started to melt and evaporate. The only snow left right now is in the shade. My neighbor (20 comments)
winter: Sedona Winter Solstice - It is all about the shadows!
- 12/22/19 08:23 AM
Sedona Winter Solstice It is all about the shadows! On the Winter Solstice, the sun rises at the most eastern part of its journey along the horizon. During the Summer Solstice, the sun will rise on the most north-eastern part of the horizon. Each extreme will showcase the shadow that the sun creates. Coffeepot Rock
Coffeepot Rock is the perfect example to document. It sits approximately 300º west-northwest in directly in front of my house. **The sun rises in the east at approximately 120º east-southeast on the Winter Solstice, which is the exact opposite of 300º. So the shadows show where the sun is on (28 comments)
The 6 Hour Difference Two images taken 6 hours apart. The first was shot at around 8 am at 23º! There was about 2 inches on my windshield but the backyard had fluffy white stuff at about 1/2 inch. The bottom picture was taken 6 hours later at around 2 pm and 45º. This cold front has lingered enough to keep some snow and ice in the shaded areas that the sun does not reach. Some of the red rocks also still have some snow as I was driving today. Humidity Causes Evaporation All in all, this is more normal than not. Snow (31 comments)

Last January (2018), there was one day that was in the 70ºs and 25 days in the 60ºs. That January was the warmest in Sedona in 10 years. The temps were spring like temps which actually got our spring off to an early start. But this January the weather was a (9 comments)
Will It Snow In Sedona On Christmas? Well there it is a chance of snow on Christmas. One never knows how things are going to change but there is a chance right now for snow. At 47º , I doubt we will see anything but a flurry or two but one never can be sure how the Sedona Weather may change! It brings me back to 2016 on this YouTube and Throwback Thursday!

winter: I Am Grateful For The Seasons of Sedona Arizona
- 11/02/18 12:18 PM
Post 2: Ten Gratitude Posts - courtesy of Debbie Reynolds The Seasons of Sedona Anyone who follows me, knows that I love our weather. In Sedona, we get real change in the seasons. As much as I love seasonal changes, I am still a lightweight when it comes to cold weather. This is probably why I enjoy this time of year so much. Our seasons are mild and our humidity is low. It is humid air that makes warm air feel stiffling and it is moisture in the cold air that brings a chill to the bones. We get neither of those conditions which makes me extremely grateful. The Shadows Tell The Tale The camera is facing west while taking these images. Since taking the winter solstice image, we lost two pine trees. On the winter solstice the sun rises in the southeast creating a shadow on the northeast side of Coffeepot Rock. During the summer solstice, the sun will rise at it furthest point in the northeast which creates a shadow on the southeast face of the rock. On the equinox (fall or spring), the sun should allign with that knife edge of the rock face and create very little shadow on either side. That will be the next picture in (11 comments)
winter: Youtube Thurs - Coffee Pot Rock - A Dramatic Backdrop For Falling Snow
- 03/01/18 05:16 PM
Video Snippet of Snow Falling Against Red Rock Backdrop Coffee Pot Rock This video was taken in the Cottages At Coffee Pot subdivision. A gated community in Soldiers Pass West Sedona Arizona - We had 2.5 inches of snow fall but you would never know it if you slept in until noon! Watching the snow fall is very relaxing and provides a stress release in and of itself. Of course that takes into consideration that you are not driving around in the white stuff! The Sedona Climate in all four seasons is fairly mild when you compare to other areas of the country. ~ ~ ~ Sedona Homes (21 comments)
That white stuff is called snow on the Nandina. I have been saying that it does not feel like winter until you get some snow. We got about 1.25 inches! Just enough to add some flock to the bushes, trees and grass. By Saturday it was gone. When the temps finally dip in Sedona, the red color comes out in the Nandina. It is my favorite winter bush. Happy Sunday!

Sedona 2017 Final Weather Stats & RecordsCourtesy of and The Sedona Weather - Year In Review...300 Days of Sunshine! Sedona Weather - Tracking "sunshine" as a statistic, was not easy. One has to be cognizant of the weather each and every day. To be accurate, this statistic needs to be recorded on a daily basis. My husband decided to take on this project for one year to see how accurate the claim was. Many areas that boast high tourism and lots of sunshine claim this statistic. But there was an inner curiosity to either prove or disprove the claim in Sedona. So (14 comments)

Over a week ago, we got just enough cool temps in 30ºs in am to create the sugar reaction in the leaves to produce the usual fall color. Outside decorations are going up today to avoid the cooler weather! Have a great finish to your Thanksgiving weekend. Interested in living the Sedona Lifestyle? Learn more (21 comments)

February 2, 2016 - Snow Diamonds Snow-Diamonds on Vimeo. When the sun comes up normally in Sedona, the snow starts melting immediately. But because the temperature was 19º, the snow was firm and in no danger of melting at that moment. The sun is at a low angle as it hits the snow and creates a refraction on the ice particles which mimics the brilliant shimmer of a diamond. Unfortunately, the camera lens does not pick up the shimmer quite the same as your eye does. I must (5 comments)
I toke this video in my neighborhood - The Cottages of CoffeePot located in West Sedona, Arizona. The big red rock is called Coffeepot Rock. Our community which we affectionately call 'The Cottages' sits at the base of that rock. The forest borders our properties and most owners can walk out the front or back slider right into the forest or other hiking trails. It is a great location for easy hiking or just walking your dog.
Today is another day that allows us the ability to enjoy the red rocks of Sedona from a nice vantage point...sitting (3 comments)
