st louis fire: Why does STL smell like smoke???

Why does STL smell like smoke??? A cold front moving through the St. Louis area is pulling in the odor from several fires west of St. Louis. There are currently several thousand acres of grassland on fire in Kansas and Oklahoma. There is also a controlled burn occurring in Shannon County, MO, which is contributing to the smell in the region.
