Berwick Maine was first known as Newichawannock, an Abenaki Indian name. There is evidence of settlement here as early as 1624 and was finally settled in 1631. The town was incorporated on June 9, 1713 by the Massachusetts General Court. Berwick is the 9th oldest town in Maine. Named after a town called Berwick-on-Tweed in Dorsetshire, England. Berwick suffered many Indian raids before becoming established.
Berwick is located just over the New Hampshire border from Somersworth New Hampshire. North Berwick and South Berwick were originally part of the town. South Berwick became was set off in 1814 and North Berwick in 1831. The 2000 Census shows 6,353 residents living on 42 square … (0 comments)
