A retired teacher in Millburn/Short Hills is the latest recipient of the Patriot Award. This is an award that is often given to veterans of war, but on July 4, 2008 our longtime resident Jo-Ann Vitanzo Early, received this prestigious award at Taylor Park. The Friends of the Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge recently hosted a series of such events. On Saturday July 12th, the Friends and the Refuge staff sponsored a youth volunteerism event to help with a clean up project. Children and teens ages twelve and older were able to learn about painting, pruning, planting and invasive species. Residents in Millburn/Short Hills were pleased to learn about the following improvements to the local recycling program. On June 2, 2008, the Public Works Department was extremely proud to offer the option of single stream recycling to Millburn and Short Hills. Single Stream recycling simply means that residents can now put out for collection all recyclable materials on the same day in the same container. Residents can also opt to separate recyclable materials, but either way the materials will all be picked up. In doing research for interesting information to highlight in my blog, I am continually in awe of the tireless efforts of Millburn/Short Hills community members to help out those in need. Here is yet another such example of this. The students of the Millburn High School drama club banded together in an effort to raise a minimum of $1000 for AIDS/HIV research. Heading up this event was senior Emily Hughes, a four-year member of the drama club.
