staging: Tips from the field - 07/07/10 04:08 PM
I am taking the plunge!  Yes, I am about to become a home seller!  This will be the second time I am selling a home and what a completely different experience than the last time.  I contribute most of that to becoming an accredited stager since then.
Learning lessons is part of life, and I have certainly learned my share.  I want to share with you some of the lessons I have discovered since beginning the process of staging my current house for sale.
First and foremost, give yourself time to get all of the important things you want … (14 comments)

staging: Help Me Help Them - 12/26/09 02:17 PM
Imagine this. You are desperately trying to get away from violence and fear and abuse.  You have sought out housing in a local domestic violence shelter because you have no where else to go.  You are unsure of what to expect and hope there is room to stay until you can build a new life.  You have mustered up all of the courage you have and wait to see if there will be space for you ...
This scenario is all too common for many women and their children in this community.  SpringHaven, inc., our local domestic violence shelter and … (4 comments)

staging: Simple Staging Ideas for the Season - 11/29/09 01:03 PM
The holidays are here and chances are you want to decorate for the holidays.  Before the difficult economic times hit us, it was easy to go out and purchase beautiful decorations.  These days most of us have had to tighten our belts and need to evaluate the way we decorate. Allow me to share a few ways that you can decorate on a dime this holiday season.
I recently conducted a workshop on Staging Your Table.  I ran into one of the participants the other day and she commented that now she looks at everything in a different way.  That … (9 comments)

staging: Homeowners lose thousands of dollars - What is ROSI? - 04/24/09 02:35 PM
Everyday I see homeowners lose THOUSANDS of dollars.  In these economic times, it  breaks my heart because it is needless for the most part.
What am I talking about?  Whenever someone invests money there is a return on that investment, also known as ROI.  Home Staging is really no different, we professionals call it ROSI, or Return on Staging Investment.  This occurs when the value of your home increases because of the investment in Staging Dollars put into the house.
Most people cannot afford to throw money away needlessly.  A popular view is that Home Staging is a … (12 comments)

staging: Setting the Stage for Spring - 03/24/09 01:28 AM

Are you as tired of winter as I am?  I get so excited when I see daffodils popping up all over the place.  As the temperatures rise, I get a bigger case of Spring Fever everyday.
With every change of season I get an itch to "Stage" my home's décor.  Just like I change my wardrobe to reflect the season, I also try to change my home.  As fall and winter approached, I changed to spice-scented candles, heavier fabrics for window coverings, thick blankets for my bed and pinecones and winter berries replaced my florals.  I was thrilled to … (10 comments)

staging: Humble Beginnings - 02/14/09 02:24 AM
My career in Staging started on a whim.  My brother is a real estate developer in Cleveland, Ohio and he had just purchased two older apartment buildings in a hip part of town that he was going to renovate and sell as condos.  His designer that had worked for him on previous projects couldn't help him on this one and I happened to be visiting and I asked him if I could take a look.  He agreed and a passion emerged that I didn't know I had.
These buildings were very old - radiators, old plumbing, faulty electrical,  - you all … (15 comments)

staging: Making Sense of Scents - 02/08/09 12:06 PM
I spoke with a realtor today about a showing she had over the weekend at a house with that "Smell" thing going on.  She said even the client couldn't wait to get out of the house.  It reminded me of this article I wrote for The News Enterprise.
          Making Sense of Scents
Odor is usually not a word that conjures up positive thoughts.  The way something smells can be an extremely powerful motivator, so when selling your home, it is more important than ever to pay attention to odors.  One goal of Staging is to make the … (16 comments)

staging: Staging Inventory - Free - 02/06/09 01:47 PM
Any stagers, decorators or designers out there that may be looking for twigs, sticks, branches or bunches?  I have some amazing inventory for you.  You can have it for free but you have to haul it.  You are welcome to as much as you can handle.  Of course you probably want to see the inventory first so here are some  pictures:
Back yard- see the swingset is crushed!
                      Front yard
This is some of the debris left over from last week's ice storm.  We were very fortunate not to have any damage to the house - there were many … (16 comments)

staging: Change Victim - not me! - 02/05/09 12:29 PM
For many years I taught a class on Adapting to Change.  I have been named the education coordinator for the women's networking group that I belong to and decided that "change" would be a great topic to discuss today at our meeting.  I added some fresh research to the old lesson, but the gist was still - are you going to be a change victim or a change master?  Can you adapt to the times to have your business survive the slow down?
My research yielded information that applied to survival in today's economic climate.  Many experts encourage additional marketing and relationship building.  Getting in contact with those … (19 comments)

staging: What does a car for sale have to do with Staging? - 02/04/09 01:39 AM
I was reading through several blogs the other night and a common topic was how do you convince homeowners and realtors to use staging.  I bang my head against the wall with it continually trying to find new ways to "sell" staging services.  When I went through my ASP course, one of the great analogies that Barb Schwarz used was "detail your house like you would detail your car".  I took off on that thought in one of my articles for our local paper.  I thought I would share it with the Active Rain community.
Have you ever tried to sell your … (7 comments)

staging: Staging for Survival - 02/02/09 01:51 PM
Okay I am a home stager.  I often advertise that I stage not only to sell, but stage to live, stage to work and am even throwing in my hat at Staging for seniors.  Today I realized that I could add one more - I have now Staged for Survival.
Sounds drastic doesn't it?  Today I purchased a day-glo orange rubbermaid bin that you can't miss - even in the dark.  I wanted something that I would stand out even without a flash light.  I wanted somewhere to put all of the great items that saved me and helped me survive this … (16 comments)

staging: Ice Storm Productivity - 01/31/09 12:23 PM
Well I have learned a whole bunch about myself this week.  On Tuesday our area was blanketed with a most horrific ice storm.  We have been without power since Tuesday night and four days later, I am ready for the power to be back on.
I learned that I am much more dependent on technology than I ever realized.  I feel like I had a limb cut off or something. Not being able to communicate with the outside world is crazy.  I just worked out my profiles on Active Rain and facebook and then I can't check them.  What is the world … (15 comments)

staging: New Year Wishes - 01/27/09 07:11 AM
I know that the New Year has begun, but because I am just starting my year with Active Rain, I thought I would share a poem I wrote for the readers in our local newspaper in Elizabethtown, The News Enterprise.
Below is a lighthearted view of staging.  I would like to take this opportunity to wish you happiness and prosperity in the New Year.  May your houses get sold and your wishes come true!
T'was the night before the showing, when all through the house,
Every creature was stirring, getting rid of the mouse.
Trying to prepare for … (8 comments)

staging: Wow! - 01/23/09 09:56 AM
Wow!  What a week this has been.  I am trying to jump into the age of technology!  I joined Active Rain this week and I just set up on Facebook!  I spent a long time looking up old friends.  I need to remember to only do that when I have some time.  Hmmm ...when will that be!  It has been a busy, busy week and I made some great connections.
I will post the article that I wrote for our local news paper today.  Each month I write a feature article in the News Enterprise.  Seeing as though an article was … (10 comments)
