mn: Sunday's Site - Aamodt's Apple Farm, Stillwater
- 09/22/14 05:40 AM
It seems that fall is quickly slipping away, and I had been planning an apple orchard visit for a long time. Finally, we made it...enjoying a visit on a beautiful fall weekend. We are blessed with many apple orchards in the Twin Cities area, and living on the west side of the metro for more than 20 years we have usually visited orchards on that side. This year we decided to go the opposite direction and visit Aamodt's Apple Farm in Stillwater, MN. Although the pick-your-own apple season is long over, there was still lots of activity, plenty fresh apples and delicious (0 comments)
mn: St. Louis Park... awesome kid-friendly suburb close to everywhere
- 02/08/14 09:53 PM
St. Louis Park is a first ring Twin Cities suburb bordering the western edge of Minneapolis. Although developed primarily after WWII, it also has historic homes dating back to the early part of the last century... and more recent developments such as the West End entertainment district and the Excelsior and Grand district with condos and restaurants/shops on Wolf Park and home of the first Trader Joe's in the Twin Cities!
The eastern part of St. Louis Park bordering the Minneapolis lakes district has more of an urban feel... and the western part bordering Minnetonka has more of a suburan (6 comments)
mn: Westwood Hills... home of St. Louis Park's Nature Center
- 07/22/12 11:26 PM
One of the benefits of living in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area is the abundance of nature at our doorsteps, wherever you might be in the metro area. The Westwood Hills neighborhood in the first ring suburb of St. Louis Park bordering Minneapolis is a neighborhood dominated by rolling hills and big homes, with nearly 40% of its area comprised of parks and open space. It is the highest geographic point in St. Louis Park, and home of the Minneapolis Golf Club and Westwood Hills Nature Center. You may have seen Westwood Lake as you whizzed past on I-394 on your way (1 comments)
mn: Finding Community in Windsor Green
- 04/01/11 03:02 AM
New Brighton's Windsor Green was the first owner-occupied townhome complex in Minnesota and it was carefully designed to be an enticing reason to transition from a house. With spacious units of several different designs, 34 acres of beautiful, park-like grounds, 2 swimming pools, tennis courts, meandering paths and Silver Lake and Silverwood regional park across the street it has a feeling of owning your home in a resort setting where everything outside is taken care of for you.
But I learned that Windsor Green is much more than that from Lisa, an East-coast transplant who moved to the Twin Cities 4 years ago and bought a (2 comments)
It's a popular family destination for good reason. With a 30-foot climbing tree, 4 giant tube slides plus a triple wave slide and new super slide down from the lookout, "The Peak" is climbing, crawling, sliding adventure that can occupy children and their families for hours regardless of the weather! It also has a toddler area for small tots, an inflatable air bounce and a large open gym play area (1 comments)
mn: Silverwood Park - center for arts and environment
- 03/20/11 01:59 AM
Silverwood Park is unique Twin Cities regional park in New Brighton with a focus on the arts and the environment. This 68-acre park was a Salvation Army Camp from 1922 until 2001, when the Three Rivers Park District purchased it and redeveloped the site. With miles of hiking and biking trails offering spectacular views of Silver Lake including a bridge to the island, this is a wonderful place to enjoy a peaceful nature retreat... and perhaps go fishing or canoeing or bring a sketch pad or enjoy a family picnic.

Officially Hyland Lake Park Reserve, this 1,000 acre park is part of the Three Rivers Park District and offers much more... although the creative play area is definitely a worthy kid magnet!

NOTE: see the bottom of Sunday's Site posts for homes for sale in the area My first visit to Excelsior's Antiquity Rose was over 20 years ago. We had recently moved to the Twin Cities, Eden Prairie to be exact, and were overwhelmed with the warm welcome... including having my neighbors introduce me to charming Excelsior on Lake Minnetonka with lunch at Antiquity Rose. Located in an old house just off Excelsior's Water Street and around the corner from Lake Minnetonka, it is an interesting blend of antique shop and tea room... open for lunch only, Monday through Saturday. mn: "Functional Dysfunction", Bloomington Art Center
- 03/21/10 12:47 AM
Functional Dysfunction is a unique art exhibition that opened Friday at the Bloomington Art Center. It explores the collaborative paintings of Caprice Glaser and Ray Becoskie, two Twin Cities artists who create large scale paintings together by working alternately on a single canvas.
I discovered them at the Northrup King Building last fall and fell in love with both their individual and collaborative works. I loved their focus on line, color and composition... and was intrigued by the concept of two artists working together to create a single painting. When I received an invitation to the opening of this exhibition with (2 comments)
mn: The General Store of Minnetonka
- 02/27/10 11:28 PM
The General Store of Minnetonka, which celebrated its 25th anniversary last year, began when the founder decided to expand her hobby of making dolls and selling them. Did she ever expand! They now offer the best selection of Minnesota gifts anywhere in the metro... 20,000 square feet packed with unique items for home, lake, clothing, jewelry and kids. I had been driving by the store for years when it was still the dark, lower building you see in the middle of the photo before deciding to stop one day. What a surprise... even then there was a dizzying array, enough to take (3 comments)
