staging: It’s a great time to buy, but is it a great time to sell?
- 01/10/10 05:04 PM
It is a great time to sell, for smart homeowners. Here’s how: Hire a realtor. They can help you make all the decisions related to marketing and selling your home. Hire a home stager. A professional will consult with you or perform the work to make your home wow buyers and encourage them to make an offer. Price realistically. Do your research and take the advice of your realtor. Priced and presented properly, homes are selling quickly. Include buyer motivators. There are many loan programs available that may help a buyer get into a new home, even one that needs (5 comments)
staging: Selecting Linens For the Bedroom
- 01/10/10 07:51 AM
To me, there’s nothing better than a set of crisp white sheets. They’re clean and cozy, but what works for you? Here are a few things to consider when making your bed. Look at both sides of the comforter. Even when it’s not marketed as reversible, the contrasting side of the comforter is important. I often choose one based on the “other” side. Liking both sides extends the life of the piece and the flexibility allows you to change your décor with the seasons, or on a whim. My favorite right now is a coverlet, with a deep blue on blue (0 comments)

staging: Staging Horror Stories
- 09/18/09 03:48 AM
We’ve all had them, right? That moment when your creative process comes to a screeching halt. Something goes terribly wrong, and you suddenly find yourself doing something totally unexpected. Here’s one for ya... I visited my client for the initial consultation and instantly noticed that all of her beautiful hardwood floors were covered by custom rugs. I mean completely covered, so that the entry, hallway, kitchen, and dining room looked almost like wall-to-wall carpet. They were very nice, but taste specific, and I thought they made things a bit busy. Afterall, buyers love hardwoods, right, and these must be pristine since (5 comments)
staging: Do You Trust Trump? Rational vs. Emotional Buying
- 06/11/09 06:26 AM
Let’s face it, investment property deals seem to be intellectual situations, not emotional. But, about 80% of all buying decisions are based on emotional response. The other 20% is rational. Call it gut reaction, a hunch or just that something special, it is the emotional triggers that motivate a purchase decision. Logical reasoning just provides the back up. Every sales situation needs to hit the buyer’s sweet spot. That is why instructors at Trump University suggest staging for investment properties. This home was professionally staged before going on the market. Even during the slow months, it was shown consistently. The agent and seller priced the home competitively, and received multiple offers. The results: sold fast!

staging: Decluttering: Tip #2 – Closets Where Do I Put Everything?
- 05/04/09 02:35 PM
So what if the suitcase doesn’t provide enough room to make a dent in your closets? (See Tip #1 in a previous post.) Here are a few other places to stash excess items from your closets. Take a look around your home to find other items that can do double duty.
· Trunk or other decorative storage pieces that are currently empty or underutilized, i.e. nightstand drawers, piano bench. People won’t peek in these, but they will open closets and cupboards. · Garment bags. OK, this is an extension of the suitcase, (7 comments)

Maybe you’re preparing your home for sale, or maybe just Spring cleaning. The dreaded places to go in many homes are the closets! I know it’s true in my house. No matter how many times I organize and purge, things always seem to overflow again faster than I can keep up. Maybe it’s the kids fault :) Anyway, we’ve all been told to move put things somewhere else, but where? Here’s a quick and easy idea. Do you have empty suitcases stored somewhere? · First, find those. · Then, put all of your out of (3 comments)
staging: The Frill is Gone
- 04/07/09 02:51 PM
I just loved this article in The Oregonian last Thursday by Larry Bingham. It's a funny, poignant perspective on the values shift resulting from the economy and state of our planet. Some is specific to Portland, but most is applicable anywhere. Had to share...
Habits may be hard to break but the troubled economy is making us all examine our spending patterns. With layoffs and furloughs in seemingly every industry, who hasn't had to cut something? Some would even say good riddance to our age of excess. Here's a light look at how life in the Northwest is shaking out (9 comments)
Portland truly is one of the greenest cities around, and now local stagers are helping to get the word out.
This week, I attended the first Live Green Live Smart Certified Professional training in Oregon thanks to Mary DeBella and Joanne O’Donnell. Now, after just one day (and some pending homework) I am a certified professional.
It was such a great experience to spend the day with other expert stagers and discuss a topic that is so important to our world and our businesses.
I looking forward to incorporating the ideas I learned into (4 comments)
staging: Ring in a Prosperous New Year
- 01/28/09 03:56 AM
Ring out the old, ring in the new Ring happy bells across the snow The year is gone, let him go Ring out the false, ring in the true
-Alfred Lord Tennyson
It’s time to ring out all the old, stuck energies from your home or office. Use this cure to allow wonderful opportunities to emerge.
Use a brass or metal bell Start at the front door or main entrance of your home or office (just the main floor of your home if more than one story) Working clockwise around, Ring the bell nine times in each (5 comments)

Jean Chatzky, Financial Editor of the Today Show, gave advice to a home owner today who was having trouble selling their Virginia home. Here’s the advice she gave: Check the price and reduce if make sense Stage it to make sure it looks better than any other house in the neighborhood Rent as an alternative to help balance your budget Throw in some freebies for the buyer/broker Seems simple enough. staging: Pride of Ownership
- 10/07/08 05:55 AM
I just finished the grueling task of pressure washing my driveway. In about hour 10 of the project (over the course of the month of September), I wondered why I was doing it at all. Then I thought about a home I toured earlier that week, and how well maintained it is. Then the light bulb went off…that darned phrase “pride of ownership”. When I moved into my home, it was dolled up for sale, and showed as really clean. I knew that I would eventually make some changes, but nothing needed repair immediately, so we bought it. staging: The Used Car Story
- 10/02/08 06:10 AM
There must be hundreds of used car analogies out there, but here’s one that may be new. It’s my little analogy about cars and homes. Ask yourself this question: would you try to sell your car the way it looks right now? Do I hear the resounding Nos? Me neither. Just for fun, make a quick list of what you would do before putting your car up for sale. Here’s mine: Remove all personal items Discard trash Vacuum mats, floor boards, and seats Dust dashboard Remove coffee stains from carpet (they’re on the passenger side, I never see them!) Wash exterior (5 comments)
I have had a number of sellers ask me for advice on their listing that has gone stagnant. First, I tell them to have a discussion with their realtor. Then, I list a few things, like staging, that they could do before dropping the price. I want to be sure that my suggestions are in keeping with realtors’ views. Tell me what you do.
What can we do other than reduce the price?
And, how do you generate interest (1 comments)
staging: Marketing During the Slow Times
- 09/20/08 09:15 AM
I worked in corporate marketing for 10 years before starting my staging business. It always surprised me how companies would cut (sometimes even freeze) their marketing budgets when business was down. Every good marketer knows that this is a bad choice. Here’s why… It takes a great effort to marketing and brand products. Like building any business, the most effort is needed in the beginning. Before you know it, there’s a momentum that will sustain the business. There will always be ups and downs and marketing tactics should change, but marketing should remain a constant activity. Otherwise when the market (5 comments)
