shirley parks: ~Home Affordability in San Antonio~ - 05/07/09 08:13 AM
Every year The Center for Housing Policy publishes a "Paycheck to Paycheck" report which provides information on how easy or difficult it is to purchase a house or rent an apartment in different cities.
For home ownership costs, San Antonio ranked 119th out of 207, with 1 being the most expensive city (San Francisco) and 207 being the least expensive cities (Saginaw, Mich. and Youngstown, Ohio, tied for this spot).  So that places our city at a very affordable spot for home ownership.
San Antonio ranked 110 out of 210 on the rent affordability, with number 1 being the most expensive … (3 comments)

shirley parks: ~The Amazing Austin Skyline~ - 05/05/09 02:44 PM
Weekend before last, my husband and I had occasion to drive up IH-35 and through Austin.  I don't remember the last time I was in Austin; it must have been 5 years ago.  As we crossed the bridge over the Guadalupe River and the Austin skyline came into view, I was stunned by the breathtaking sight of all the construction cranes dotting the skyline of our state's capitol city.  It reminded me of the skyline of Houston in Houston's heyday back in the late 1970's and early 1980's.
I had noticed Jason Crouch's post, Austin was the Second-Fastest Growing City in the U.S. for 2007-2008, and thought of … (10 comments)

shirley parks: ~Cibolo Canyons~ - 05/02/09 04:52 PM
A couple of days ago I was out at Cibolo Canyons, a beautiful community I never get tired of viewing.  Several months ago the Greater San Antonio Builders Association issued 12 awards at the 2008 "green" Parade of Homes in the Palacios at Cibolo Canyons.
For their efforts on the $1 million-plus homes, these builders captured top honors.  If they had the event today, I think the same honors would be given out:

shirley parks: ~Hummingbird Gardens~ - 05/02/09 04:24 PM
Attract hummingbirds to your yard by planting a hummingbird garden.  Don't use pesticides around hummingbird plants. Killing garden pests also kills the small insects hummingbirds rely upon for protein. The insecticide could also kill the birds or make them sick.
Hummingbirds have little sense of smell but are attracted by bright colors.  Here are some that should attract more hummingbirds to your garden.

shirley parks: ~Swine Flu Reaction or Over-reaction? - 05/02/09 03:04 PM
Swine flu is inducing panic in some people.  When I stopped by WalMart on Monday to pick up some surgical masks and an antibacterial hand washing product, there was none left.  I still haven't bought any. The virus also induces a panic response from your immune system. For people in their twenties, it is your own immune system that is most affected and does you in.  I'm well past my twenties but that doesn't mean my age group is safe.
My plan is to use caution and not get infected.
The advice given on tv and on the internet is to 1.) wash your hands … (6 comments)
