texas: I Found Money and You Can, Too! - 01/09/09 12:40 PM
YAY!
For some reason today, out of the blue, I logged on to the Texas Unclaimed Property website.  I already knew that I have less than a dollar listed there but have never bothered to claim such a minute sum and really didn't think about doing so.
But today I did a search for my daughter and found that she has a $507 Refund/Rebate Due from The University of Texas.
Then I checked my husband's name and he has a $45 Customer Overpayment from a Medical Organization.
Finally I checked for myself and I still have $0.98 Royalties from 3 separate checks.

texas: Check Out Insurance Before Buying - 08/31/08 02:06 PM
Here are some tips from the Texas Department fo Insurance to protect yourself and/or your employees from fraudulent health plans:
Be skeptical if you´re offered coverage that boasts unusually low premium rates. Make sure the plan is insured by a licensed insurer. Ask for the insurer´s name and check the benefits booklet to see if it names a licensed insurer. You can verify claims that an insurance company is backing the plan by contacting the company. Contact the Texas Department of Insurance Fraud Unit if an agent offers you a union plan, invokes ERISA or claims not to need a license because the coverage … (0 comments)

texas: Look down my rain barrel, Slide down my cellar door - 07/15/08 05:54 AM
For some reason that old song that goes "Look down my rain barrel, slide down my cellar door" is stuck in my mind today. Actually, the idea from "back in the day" of rain barrels would be a wonderful green idea for today.  We are moving toward more solar power and wind power and should be thinking of water conservation as well. Getting a rain barrel or two for your yard is a simple and time honored way to collect and reuse rainwater.  The barrel can be placed under a downspout and it will fill up quickly.  A screen can be installed on top of the barrel to keep … (8 comments)

texas: Trend Predictions - 06/29/08 01:39 PM
It's only 22 years away but according to a Realty Times acticle I read this week-end, the population trend predictions for the year 2030 are:

Total US population is estimated at 400 million in 2030. The traditional household (married couple with children) which comprised 90% of households in 1950 will comprise only 65% of households in 2030. 29% of US households will be living alone in 2030. … (5 comments)

texas: Southern Sweet Tea - 05/17/08 04:59 AM
Drinking sweet tea is one of the oldest and most exceptional of Southern traditions. As Dolly Parton's character in Steel Magnolias puts it, it's the "house wine of the South." The South reveres its traditions, and sweet tea is one of them. As an April Fools' Day prank in 2003, Georgia State Rep. John Noel introduced a bill that would have made it a misdemeanor for a restaurant owner not to include sweet tea on the menu.
Southern Sweet Tea Recipe
For Simple Syrup:* 4 cups sugar * 2 cups waterFor Tea:* 4 cups water* 8-10 regular-sized or 3 "family sized" bags orange … (0 comments)

texas: Gone To Texas - 03/28/08 12:39 AM
According to Census Bureau estimates released Thursday, four metropolitan areas in Texas were among the biggest population gainers in 2006 and 2007.  At the top of the list is the combined Dallas - Ft. Worth area which grew by more than 162,000 residents.  A report issued earlier this month by Global Insight reported that housing prices in the Dallas area were undervalued by as much as 30 percent.  16 percent of Americans who moved to other states between July 2006 and July 2007 came to Texas.  Much of the growth in the South is credited to relatively strong local economies and housing prices that … (0 comments)
