military relocation: Fit for a chef: Home for sale at 178 High Oak, Universal City, Texas 78148 - 02/21/11 09:16 AM
The sellers of this home bought it just a few years ago and promptly updated the kitchen, which is fabulous. Now they are moving out of state to a new job and town that will bring their kids closer to the grandparents. That should help them get over the sadness of leaving their house and saying goodbye to all the friends they've made here.
Meadow Oaks is a small, established neighborhood on the northeast side of the San Antonio metro area. It is within easy commuting distance of Randolph Air Force Base and Fort Sam Houston, but tucked away from traffic. … (5 comments)

military relocation: San Antonio set to gain even more jobs, courtesy of BRAC and Fort Sam Houston - 09/11/10 02:19 PM
How many people are relocating to San Antonio to work at or around Fort Sam Houston in the next few years? It depends. The number could be as many as 12,000, comprising both military and civilian workers.
Whatever the final head count, the folks who move to San Antonio as a result of the Defense Base Closure and Realignment Commission consolidation will give a boost to the housing market for home sales, builders, and investors in rental properties.
Fort Sam, as it's known locally, is poised to be the center of the military's medical training programs. Brooke Army Medical Center, right next … (5 comments)

Construction of a $34.9 million, 132,000-square-foot Primary Health Clinic has been completed at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio. military relocation: San Antonio economy diversifies into cyber security - 02/26/10 02:04 AM
San Antonio is known for the Alamo, great Tex-Mex food, and now: cyber security.
Yes, it's true. When you think of San Antonio, think of spies and spooks and computer nerds. The military and the US government desperately need better security to protect their networks from hackers. It is a growing part of the IT industry, generating $8 billion annually, according to the Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce. There are already more than 60 computer security firms located in the San Antonio metro, employing an estimated 6,000 workers.
Recognizing this, the US Air Force has selected San Antonio as its headquarters for … (9 comments)

military relocation: San Antonio, Texas, real estate market news round-up - 12/30/09 10:32 AM
The San Antonio residential real estate market is finally - back to normal. Existing home sales increased by a whopping 52 percent from November of last year. Most of the home sales, some 76 percent according to the San Antonio Board of Realtors, were in the price range under $200,000. This is most likely due to the first time home buyer tax credit.

However, foreclosure filings in Bexar County are at a record high number of 1,652 for January. If there is a silver lining, it is that this spells more opportunities for home buyers, as well as real estate … (7 comments)

military relocation: Home for lease in Converse, Texas: convenient to Fort Sam Houston and Randolph AFB - 12/29/09 05:07 AM
The current tenants of this home have been wonderful, but they need to move to the northwest part of San Antonio, after commuting to work there for several months. At this time of the year, builders are offering great incentives to get their inventory off the books. So the tenants are buying a new home and moving out a few months early, and this home needs to be leased right away. It will be clean and ready for new residents on January 3. Well-behaved pets would be considered.

Escondido Creek is located in the town of Converse, on the northeast side … (5 comments)

military relocation: A beautifully remodeled garden home at 8209 Windway in Windcrest, TX - 07/20/09 10:35 AM
I love these remodeled homes in older, closer-in neighborhoods like Windcrest. You have the advantage of being in an established, convenient neighborhood close to amenities, plus an updated home to add to your comfort. The sellers did a great job updating this home and enhancing the landscaping.

This lovely home is a good example of what you can find northeast of the San Antonio city limits, but still in Bexar County and the San Antonio metro. This area is convenient for commuting to Fort Sam Houston, the city's largest employer, or Brooke Army Medical Center, as well as to Rackspace's new headquarters, … (4 comments)

military relocation: Welcome to Universal City, Texas - a great place to live - 02/24/09 02:17 AM
Universal City, part of the San Antonio MSA and located on the northeast corner of Bexar County, starts at Randolph Air Force Base's north gate. The main drag through the city from the entrance to Randolph is Pat Booker Road, which connects Loop 1604, San Antonio's "outer loop," to State Highway 78 and the all-important Southern Pacific Railroad that parallels 78. The city was named by a developer to designate the universal importance of the air base, which opened in 1931.

Lots of people are going to be relocating to Fort Sam Houston and Brooke Army Medical Center (now known as San Antonio Military Medical Center) over the next few months as the two facilities expand under BRAC. If you're one of them and you're not familiar with San Antonio, you may be wondering where to look for a home. Here is an overview of neighborhoods within easy commuting distance of Fort Sam and BAMC. Details on other neighborhoods will follow in upcoming posts.
Alamo Heights is less than a mile, in places, from Fort Sam. It is the tree-filled Beverly Hills of San Antonio, with sales … (3 comments)

military relocation: Lackland AFB in San Antonio, the Gateway to the Air Force: bigger and better - 10/28/08 11:28 AM
The Pentagon is planning to spend $3 billion on various projects in San Antonio over the next few years, only partly as a result of 2005 Base Realignment and Closure recommendations. The Air Force will break ground next spring on a $900 million Airmen Training Complex at Lackland AFB, on San Antonio's southwest side.
This will be the biggest USAF construction project anywhere for the near future, and by 2014, 20 new structures will be built. They include a dormitory and eight 1,200-person training complexes that will be served by four dining halls to replace the Recruiting, Housing & Training facilities, … (1 comments)

military relocation: Changes coming: Lackland AFB and Wilford Hall Medical Center, San Antonio, Texas - 10/15/08 05:09 AM
Lackland AFB is home to the 37th Training Wing, the largest in the Air Force. It provides basic military training as well as training in professional and technical skills, and English language for the other military services as well as the Air Force, government agencies, and US allies. It is the only entry processing station for USAF enlisted Basic Military Training (BMT). Lackland currently has six technical training squadrons, from which more than 86,000 students graduate every year.
When Kelly AFB was closed as a result of BRAC 1995, Lackland took on a flying mission and incorporated the adjacent 2-mile-long runway.  … (5 comments)

military relocation: Ribbon cutting for AEF at Randolph AFB, Texas - 10/02/08 08:14 AM
The Air Force's deployment and personnel processes are being combined in a transfer of the AEF Center from Langley AFB in Virginia to Randolph AFB, just northeast of San Antonio, Texas. Earlier in the year, AFPC's readiness division and casualty matters division were combined with AEF operations to create the Air and Space Expeditionary Force and Personnel Operations Directorate.  The directorate seems to have met their goal of keeping disruption to a minimum during the transition. Tasks included readying the AFPC's infrastructure by migrating computer systems, rewiring networks, increasing bandwidth, and bringing systems online in the new location.

The ceremony on September … (4 comments)

military relocation: New training facility opens at Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio, Texas - 10/02/08 02:31 AM
Fort Sam Houston is the location for a new Army Medical Department Center and School's Center for Predeployment Medicine. The CPDM will offer training to combat medics, nurses, senior noncommissioned medics, physicians, and  their assistants and will cover everything from providing first aid on the battlefield to support in combat hospitals. Four courses that were previously spread throughout various departments at the AMEDD Center and School will now be offered by CPDM. Since the courses will now be mandatory rather than optional, and offered moe frequently, they will benefit from being administered through a single center.

military relocation: Relocating to Lackland AFB? An overview of nearby San Antonio neighborhoods - 03/27/08 08:15 AM
If you're in the Air Force, chances are you've been to Lackland Air Force Base for basic training, but if you are coming to San Antonio for a longer stay, you might be interested in this overview of the local housing market.
Lackland is located on the west/southwest part of San Antonio, where for a long time new residential development has languished. Many of the neighborhoods close to the base were built in the 60s and 70s, before Kelly AFB was decommissioned, and prices today range around $50,000 to $80,000. These include Lackland Terrace (and other neighborhoods with the name "Lackland"), … (10 comments)

military relocation: Fort Sam just gets bigger and better - 01/15/08 01:47 AM
One of San Antonio's largest employers, Fort Sam Houston, will be getting even bigger in the next few years: $1.5 billion bigger. Fort Sam (as it's known here) has 19 new buildings on the way, and another 4 buildings scheduled for renovation under the 2005 Defense Base Closure and Realignment Commission--somewhat ironically, since many San Antonians vividly remember the closure of Kelly AFB, another huge employer in the military city.
Fort Sam has a long history of caring for wounded soldiers. It is home to the Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC), which is a Level 1 trauma center with a world-renowned … (2 comments)
