new mexico: Free Radon Test Kits From NM Environment Department - 01/09/08 12:34 AM
The New Mexico Environment Department is offering free radon test kits for residents throughout January as part of an effort to raise awareness of naturally occurring radioactive gas, which is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the U.S.  Radon often goes undetected because it is invisible and odorless.  Previous surveys of homes tested for radon in New Mexico found that about 25 percent exceeded the EPA's recommended action level of four picocuries per liter for radon.   To obtain a free radon test kit, contact Michael A. Taylor, NMED indoor radon outreach coordinator, at (505) 827-1093 or at Michael.Taylor@state.nm.us.

The Kneeling Nun is a large columnar rock monolith that resembles a praying nun.  Located just off Highway 152 east of Silver City the Kneeling Nun overlooks the Santa Rita open-pit copper mine.  Although this prominent area landmark is about 20 miles from Silver City it is visible from town.  The first written account of the Kneeling Nun was in 1853 and it appears for the first time on published maps of the region in 1883.
A source of local legend, one of the the stories surrounding the Kneeling Nun rock monolith is that "a nun, in one of the numerous Jesuitical convents, committed an offense for which … (0 comments)

new mexico: Silver Schools Enrollment Up - 10/30/07 02:39 AM
The Silver Consolidated School District reported that enrollment is up slightly this fall to the Silver City Daily Press in an October 29, 2007 atricle.  The current enrollment is at 3,121 students up from an average of 3,110 during the 2006-07 school year.  If the increase holds through the end of the school year it will reverse a 12 year trend of declining enrollment.  The Superintendent Dick Pool stated that the two primary factors for the loss of students has been the decrease in employment at the area mines and the shift to promoting Silver City as a retirement community.

new mexico: What can I do to improve the resale value of my home? - 10/24/07 03:41 AM
Many times home owners ask real estate agents what improvements they can make that will add value to their home when it comes time to sell.  Given that the average American moves every 4 years, it is important to think about increasing the resale value of a house.
There are 5 key areas to look at when adding value to a home: kitchens, bathrooms, flooring, landscaping and structural improvements.
The most valuable home improvements include kitchen and bathroom remodels.  Updates in these areas are the number one requirement of most buyers.  Not all updates have to be expensive, for older houses, a coat … (0 comments)

new mexico: Have you ever heard of "mouse rage"? - 10/17/07 03:19 AM
According to a study conducted by the Social Issues Research Centre the Internet can be bad for your health.  When you are surfing the net do you sometimes experience a rapid heart rate...increased sweating...furious clicking of the mouse...cursing at your computer screen?  If so, you may be experiencing the first signs of "mouse rage."
The study combined data from a poll of 2,500 internet users and measured the physical and physiological reactions to website experiences, looking at brainwaves, heart-rate fluctuations, muscle tension and skin conductivity.

new mexico: Marketing... - 10/10/07 09:20 AM
At today's Silver City Chamber of Commerce Workshop I learned several things about marketing.  First of all it was a very well attended Chamber luncheon.  Secondly, any Chamber member that does not regularly attend the Chamber luncheons is missing out as it is a great networking opportunity.
The topic was about Internet marketing and responsible tourism.  The points that came across to me was that everyone in a community is impacted by tourism.  Many readily appreciate tourism such as hotels, restaurants, destinations, etc.  But the point that was made is that every one has a stake in promoting tourism because if the hotel … (1 comments)

new mexico: Real Estate in New Mexico - 10/09/07 03:54 AM
I recently returned from the REALTORS® Association of New Mexico annual convention.  After many formal and informal discussions my conclusion is that real estate really is local!  I know that the National Association of REALTORS® has been pushing that theme for the past year or so and I bought in to it, but not wholly.  However, at the convention there seemed to be a reported disparity of markets between communities in New Mexico.  While some commented that the market is sluggish, many stated that their market was only showing minute slowdowns.  The northern and central markets seem to be seeing the highest … (1 comments)
