simon conway: Four year high... for mortgages?

Yes it is hard to believe but demand for mortgages surged this week, reaching a four year high as interest rates continued to fall dramatically.
The Mortgage Bankers Association reported that application volume reached 906.4, an increase of 28.4 percent on a seasonally adjusted basis, up from 706 one week earlier. On an unadjusted basis, the index increased 64.8 percent compared with the previous week, which was shortened by the New Year holiday and was up 39 percent compared with the same week a year ago.And if all that isn't enough for you, how about refinancing? Now this may or may not come as a shock to you, but homes are still selling inside of two weeks all over the country - even in some struggling areas.
The reasons are simple and were recently highlighted in The Baltimore Sun.
Some research on that market showed that 13% of the homes that sold in the area with an average on market time of 105 days had contracts on them in under two weeks. In other words more than 250 homes went from listing to selling in under seven days.

The latest round of back and forth between the State of Florida and Allstate has culminated with the insurance company being banned from writing all business in the State - effective immediately!
This took place after just two hours of a scheduled two day meeting between Allstate executives and Insurance Commissioner Kevin McCarty.
Insurance regulators had required Allstate to submit documents related to the company's reinsurance program and use of risk-modeling companies to set homeowners-insurance rates. Allstate had requested property-insurance rate increases of more than an average 40 percent throughout the state.

I am constantly amazed at some of the stories I hear. Yesterday I was showing one of my listings. It is a truly great home - the picture is of the master bathroom and you will find a link to the virtual tour at the bottom of this blog.
Anyway the point is, my clients who live in the home, were out of town and they asked me if I could let the various people in. We actually had three showings of this property in a single day.

A law dating back hundreds of years to English common law, has been invoked in Colorado to steal a lot a couple were planning to use to build their dream home on.
Boulder couple Don and Susie Kirlin bought a piece of land in the early 1980s some 200 yards from their home. Raising a family delayed their construction plans until 2006 which is when they discovered the land had been stolen by neighbors - although what you and I might call theft, was in fact perfectly legal.

Now there's not much unusual here. It happens all the time to all of us. What is different about this one however, is the source of the request.
One of my clients had his home listed with me. Due to a variety of circumstances he needs to re-finance the home and so I told him in order for him to do that, he had to forget about listing it for a while and take another look at the situation in three to six months from now.
And so the listing was withdrawn. But I just received this from his lender.

Oh yes! Senior Executives of some of the largest insurance companies in the nation are going to be forced to tell the truth about pricing or face jail time for perjury.
State Senate leaders in Florida, including President-designate Jeff Atwater, have been appointed to a special committee that will hold two days of hearings on property insurance beginning Feb. 4.
Back in January of 2007, the Legislature provided a means for the insurance companies to buy cheaper re-insurance (they increased the State's catastrophe Fund to $28bn)- but the law clearly stated that those savings had to be passed directly to the customer - … (4 comments)

I have been suggesting the Central Florida real esatet market has been on the bottom for about three months now. All the available data I had suggested that this was the case.
Others scoffed! Others pointed fingers! Others continued to tell the tale of woe! I kept believing and kept repeating what the data was and what it was telling me.

Being born in London, England and being able to grow up there of all places in the world, during the 1960s, is a privilege I have long been aware of.
My year of awakening was unquestionably 1969. By July of that year Neil Armstrong had walked on the moon and had managed to mess up his moment purely by missing out "a". Well it has been a curious journey to get to this milestone. It had three starts and included a long layoff for back surgery, but I made it over the weekend and then someone suggested I post here about exactly how I got here.

Yes there is a way to cut people's property taxes and it can be done without the need for a supercomputer and also without the need to go out and hire a Math professor to explain it all.
Property taxes in Florida are an extremely serious issue and the Amendment that will be appearing on the ballot on January 29 doesn't deliver anything meaningful at all.
