Make the best of Fresno's "tropical" weather with the Tower District's annual Caribbean music celebration, Jamaica My Weekend. Reggae and ska bands are scheduled to entertain guests. Gates usually open at 5 p.m. and music starts at 6 p.m. This wonderful family event will be held across from St. Therese Church on the southwest corner of Maroa and Floradora.Tickets are $15 in advance, $20 at the gate. Admission is FREE for kids under 9 years of age with paid adult admission.

Just trying to get this musicians group going so I'm going to talk about something very close to me...
What is ska? For anyone interested, here's a little primer:
In a nutshell, ska was the first "popular" music Jamaica could call it's own. It is a fusion of the Jamaican mento rhythm, American R&B, and a little bit of Jazz. The drums carry the 2nd and 4th beats and the bass adds a walking line, (the R&B and swing of American music), and the guitar emphasizes the upbeats (the mento rhythm). Since this is supposed to be a musicians group, just thought I'd introduce my band.
Los Hooligans plays traditional ska, is based out of Fresno, CA., and we are currently getting ready to celebrate 15 years of playing the ska. And no, we're not just another Latin band. We've taken a musical style known as traditional Jamaican ska, and have added our own flavors of modern and traditional jazz with an occasional hit of Latin, R&B and swing/big band.
