amarillo: Mortgage Rates Remain Low for Two Straight Weeks - 04/03/09 04:43 AM
As 30-year fixed mortgage rates remain low for two straight weeks, I thought I would take the opportunity to blog about just how low these rates are.  In the last week of March, the weekly average rate borrowers were quoted for a 30-year fixed mortgage rate around the nation remained steady at 5.09%, while 15-year fixed mortgages were 4.80%.  However, each state quotes different mortgage rates.
Thirty-year fixed mortgage rates vary by each state.  This week's interest national interest rate rests at 4.78%. Texas mortgage rates were the lowest in the country, while Ohio mortgage rates were the highest.

amarillo: Spring into a Savings Plan for a New Home - 03/27/09 03:52 AM
For several years now, the American government has calculated that we have a savings rate close to a big fat 0.  However, as our nation stands on the brink of one of the worst recessions since the Great Depression, we find ourselves taking a step back and looking at what we are spending on our daily activities, traveling, vacations and more that we once took for granted.  And as a result, the savings rate for Americans has changed from 0.1% to almost 5%.  And this big increase in savings can be attributed to our reduction in our spending habits.

amarillo: A Legend is Honored as Texan of the Year - 03/20/09 05:47 AM
The well-known Dallas oil tycoon, Boon Pickens, was awarded 2009 Texan of the Year on Thursday night, which is no surprise to me.  I blogged about the huge energy plan he laid out back in July of 2008.  Pickens was recognized for coming up with an alternative energy plan that could change the world forever.
Boone Pickens was given the award Thursday night, March 19th, during the 43rd Annual Texas Legislative Conference.  Many people are looking forward to Pickens' vision.  It's exactly the type of innovation we need and Pickens is exactly the kind of leader the world needs overseeing it.  … (0 comments)

amarillo: Tiny Homes are on the Move - 03/06/09 04:44 AM
Many Americans are taught bigger is better, especially Texans.  However, that term may soon come to a halt for a while as tiny homes are on the move.  As many people lose their homes to foreclosure or the bad economy, they are downsizing into much smaller homes of less than 1000 square feet.  Some of the homes in the tiny home movement are actually less than 100 square feet.  Even I couldn't imagine that until I went online and toured one for myself.
There is a whole new meaning to up close and personal for a family in a home of … (1 comments)

amarillo: A Great Place to Call Home – Bushland, Texas! - 01/30/09 05:12 AM
The wonderful community of Bushland is one of Texas' great places to call home.  If you like small and rural, you'll love Bushland.  The community offers a quiet simple way of life away from the fast pace of the bigger city, although it's only minutes away.
Bushland, Texas can be found in southwest Potter County, just 14 miles west of Amarillo.  The town was established in 1908 as a train stop for the Chicago, Rock Island and Gulf Railroad when Henry Bush donated a portion of his 250,000 acre Frying Pan Ranch.  Farmers and ranchers then began to flock to the … (0 comments)

amarillo: Keeping Amarillo Clean - 01/23/09 04:07 AM
Amarillo's vacant lots were once a dumping ground for trash.  And complaining about it soon became a sport.  Therefore, the United Way of Amarillo & Canyon's Day of Caring Committee led the community to clean up its neighborhoods.
Last spring hundreds of volunteers banded together and spread out from San Jacinto Christian Academy to vacant lots.  Volunteers filled trash bags with trash, mown weeds and overgrowth.  They also painted over graffiti.  Since the cleanup, the San Jacinto Christian Academy students have vowed to continue their efforts for the rest of the year and on into the summer months.
